Episode 6108 (8/24/2010) – Jeffrey Goldberg

Colbert Report Episode guideEPISODE NUMBER: 6108 (August 24, 2010)
GUESTS: Jeffrey Goldberg (journalist, The Atlantic)
SEGMENTS: Terror Bunker 5200, The Word: Control-Self-Delete, Mahmoody Blues.
VIDEOS: Tuesday, August 24, 2010

Greetings, all! Nerdygirl here filling in for DB, who I believe will be back today. Another great episode in the hopper for us here — the diorama segment had me swimming in nostalgia for my elementary school years: shoeboxes, pipe cleaners, glitter, etc. Granted, none of my dioramas ever had Boba Fett in them. No wonder I always got an S minus.

I really enjoyed Stephen’s follow-up to The Daily Show segment last night regarding the “terror funding” of Alwaleed bin Talal. What a surprise that bin Talal’s son purchased Stephen’s portrait! That was a very unexpected turn.

What did you all think of the episode? Don’t forget to vote for your favorite segment in the poll, and share your thoughts in the comments!

  • My guest Jeffrey Goldberg predicts conflict in the Middle East. Also, that it will be sandy there.
  • Welcome to the Terror Bunker: where fear craps its pants.
  • The art that Bin Talal bought was my portrait from my old set! And the charity was the Yellow Ribbon Fund, which helps wounded veterans at Walter Reed and Bethesda Naval Hospital! That makes them TERROR TROOPS!
  • Jimmy, go full frame. Now zoom in. All right, yeah, further back, further back, further back… now — enhance! Oh my God! I’m a terrorist!
  • It’s five miles. It’s less than a 10k, I could run that for charity. A terror charity.
  • Social media is the only way to reach young people these days, without giving your abs a nickname. And evidently no one liked “The Laundry Sack.”
  • And the President has been very careful. I have checked Facebook, and I couldn’t find a single photo of him praying in a mosque. So, I Photoshopped one. It’s on the Twitter, so internet, do your thing!
  • Are you listening, young people? Just don’t ever make a mistake. How hard is that? [Also, Don't Post Pictures of How Hard "It" Is]
  • Gmail keeps track of everyone you’ve ever e-mailed. So you’ll want to get rid of your old friends and family. [Tell Them You Were Beta Testing]
  • And, since Google also tracks all your searches and web history, you should change everything you’ve ever searched for on the internet. [Stephen + Colbert]
  • Once all that’s done and you’re a disfigured nameless loner, you’ll be the ideal job candidate. [See: Lieberman]
  • The latest danger comes from Iranian President Mahmoud Ahma-we-just-won-an-Emmy-najad.
  • Meanwhile the United States hasn’t even started on its diorama, and it’s due Monday, first period!
  • Who’s this coming to help me? It’s Boba Fett! Out of his original packaging!
  • Man, that was fun! But one thing that’s not fun is Iran with a nuclear weapon.
  • Yeah, for some reason they’re paranoid about people who want them dead having a nuclear bomb.
  • Goldberg: When you have a religious leadership that is seeking the afterlife, they think the afterlife is going to be better than this life–
Stephen: The wrong religious leadership, seeking the wrong afterlife, you mean, but go ahead–
Goldberg: I’m not gonna go there –
Stephen: Yes, I just went there, so you don’t need to go there. There’s actually no room for you there, because I’m already there!
  • Goldberg: Those nuclear rods don’t matter as much as some of the other aspects of this program, I’m sorry to say.
    Stephen: I’m sorry you’re wrong.
  • They cut off the tips of their own penises, imagine what they’ll do to yours!

The Terror Bunker 5200 follow-up to Jon’s Alwaleed bin Talal segment was almost unbelievable. bin Talal’s son bought Stephen’s old portrait? Insanity! It was crazy how that all fit together.

I loved The Word, as always, but the Iran segment was so great! I loved Stephen’s diorama SO much – I want to hug whoever made that, it was wonderful. Stephen on a dinosaur! Boba Fett! Parmesan cheese masquerading as snow! And a mushroom bomb! Stephen looked like he was having so much fun playing with that thing. And his gun sound effects were adorable. Sometimes it’s the ridiculous, just-plain goofy segments that I get the most joy out of. :)

Agreed that the gun sounds were adorable. It actually reminded me of when I would play “Star Wars” with my little brother while babysitting. He always made those sounds!

Loved when the mushroom cloud/bomb slid off of the wire…just a minor malfunction but funny to watch Stephen’s reaction.

I love that it was somebody’s job yesterday to put together that diorama. Best. Job. Ever.

The part about bin Talal and the portrait blew my mind. (Anyone who hasn’t seen Jon’s last couple segments about Fox News and the so called Terror Mosque need to check them out. So brilliant.) I’ve always loved how Stephen can relate pretty much anything back to him, but this was just crazy. I’d have loved to see his face when he learned of the bin Talal-portrait connection.

So much to enjoy in this episode! The diorama won by a pinch for me. Wow, Stephen and his writers are so consistently clever!

Again another episode when we just can’t choose what was the awesomest stuff in it.
I mean, the previous set made it to the news : That’s something
… and Bobba Fett defeating the fearless Mahmoud Ahmadinejabba the Hutt. Woah. We really need a play set of these characters for Christmas. Especially Raging Stephen on a dinosaur.
But I don’t know if I should post that comment… Will you photoshop my head on a bear and quote me ?

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +2

The connection between bin Talal and Stephen (of course it’s all about him!) is just screaming for an extended Toss.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +3

I suspect that Stephen is an avid reader of The Atlantic. He’s had Andrew Sullivan on more than a couple times and now Jeffrey Goldberg.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  7. Gratefull says:

I loved the sounds he made when he was battling in the diorama and the inspired crated cheese for snow! LOL

WOW, I remember wondering who had purchased the portrait when it was sold but this is a twist in the Fox plot! … HA!

    Stephen, YOU rule supreme!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  8. Arkadina says:

Need I say anything else other than….THE MUSHROOM BOMB! Genius.
