The Colbert Report won the 2010 Emmy for Outstanding Writing For A Variety, Music Or Comedy Series. It was announced at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards presentation held Saturday afternoon at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. Stephen Colbert and writers of The Colbert Report beat writing teams from The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Real Time with Bill Maher, Saturday Night Live, and The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien.
The award was specifically for episode #5076 – the first of the shows broadcast from Iraq. The Colbert Report and James “Jimmy” Hoskins was also nominated for Outstanding Directing For A Variety, Music Or Comedy Series for this same episode, but lost to Saturday Night Live (with host Betty White).
[ETA: The Creative Arts Emmy Ceremony will air as a two-hour special on Friday, August 27, at 1:00 p.m. (ET/PT), on E! Entertainment Television. (h/t to dentry and lockhart43)]
The Colbert Report has also been nominated for Outstanding Variety, Music Or Comedy Series. The winners for this award will be announced during the prime time Emmy telecast on NBC on August 29th.
Congratulations to Stephen and the entire crew, including Head Writer Barry Julien, Allison Silverman, Tom Purcell, Rich Dahm, Michael Brumm, Rob Dubbin, Opus Moreschi, Peter Gwinn, Jay Katsir, Frank Lesser, Glenn Eichler, Peter Grosz, Meredith Scardino, Max Werner, and Eric Drysdale!
And, here’s a clip from Emmy awarded episode that I like to call ‘The Fan Girl’s Nightmare’

WOOHOO! Glad to hear that Stephen and his writers have been recognized! Does anyone know if these awards will be televised at all?
Haha…fangirl’s nightmare, indeed. :P

HOORAY! Look who’s honoring him now! ;-)
Only wish it could have been aired — as it SHOULD be, no matter who wins. What idiot decided writers shouldn’t get their award on-screen?
Congrats to Stephen and crew for a job well done–and for getting the award back.

As dentry mentioned above, the show will be broadcast on E! on Friday August 27th. I never thought I would say this *gulp*, but thank God for the E! channel. :P

Thanks, Lockhart. I still think it should be on the “real” awards show, but what can you do? This is better than nothing.
Does anyone know if Stephen was there?
Shout Out (Hey!):

Congratulations Stephen and all you writers!
I know, I didn’t see it listed on TV anywhere, not on Youtube, it wasn’t even on the official Emmy Twitter feed! I finally found it by downloading the press release on the Emmy website.
Don’t know why that was but…
So happy for the recognition! I can’t wait to see what Stephen will do with having 2 Emmys on his shelf.
And, please, no buzz cut again!
I wonder who picked up the Emmy for them? Anyone know?
Shout Out (Hey!):
+2
Oh wow! Congrats to the writers! They certainly earned it.
I can’t believe they’re not including this award in the regular broadcast. That’s just wrong. Though I’m sure “Stephen” will be showing the Emmy (hopefully a pair of them) off on the show.

YES!!! Big congrats to Stephen and all of the writers for a much-deserved win! And it makes me all the more thrilled to know that they won for the first show broadcast from Iraq. :D
Can’t wait to hear Stephen mention this on TCR this week!

YEAH!!! Congratulations, writers! Congratulations, Stephen! Well-deserved!!

YAAAAAAAYYY!!!!!! Let’s keep the momentum going for next week when they WILL WIN FOR BEST SHOW…ya hear me emmy voters?
They deserve it and Jennie, good call on the “Fangirl’s worst nightmare” title. INDEED!
Gen. Odierno is scheduled to come back on the show for the special shows for the troops.
Listen up General! I don’t care if you are a however many starred general of the US Army, the best Army on the planet…if you have razors in your hands when you walk out, I will dispatch my secret minion that will be in the audience who will wrestle those razors out of your hand.
In other words, hands off Stephen’s hair!!! :-D

I take comfort in the fact that Stephen NEVER repeats himself! Been there, done that, no more cutting! (Besides, to be honest, I don’t think he could bear it, either. It’s got to be terrifying to a man.)

congrats to Stephen and the Colbert Report writers on their Emmy Win.

I’m really glad the writers won! Congrats. They deserved it. :D
However: (and you knew there was going to be a “However” right?) I think Jimmy should have won too! He directed the first entertainment TV show broadcast from a war zone. Ever! Give the man a statue already!! Jesus Christ! Betty White didn’t direct SNL! You don’t have to give Emmys to everyone who crossed her path or she broke wind near! Man! That sucks! And I fear that will be a preview of what happens on the 29th. :(

Mr. Arkadin, was this actually the first entertainment show broadcast from a war zone? I wonder about some of the old Bob Hope specials during Vietnam–although in fact, they may have been directed from where the trooops were having R&R, not fighting. But, whether or not this was a first, I agree with you. The fact is, White herself was great on SNL, but the writing sucked as did most of the skits. It’s a tribute to her talent that she was able to wring laughs from such weak material. We’ll see what happens on the 29th. Frankly, I’m more concerned that it will go to Conan. And while I know many of Conan’s fans are on this site–and in general, I’m one of the them, too–and while I agree he was treated terribly by NBC, don’t think he shone on the Tonight Show. I always thought is was a space that controlled his wackiness, rather than let it loose.

Karenatasha, I know Hope did perform in many war zones. But I don’t think he broadcast from them. I was quoting from memory what I think Stephen had said at (or around) the time of the shows airing. That TCR was the 1st. I may be incorrect. If so, I apologize.
I had actually forgotten about Conan. And your right. He may very well get the Emmy nod, for all the wrong reason. IMHO.

Mr. Arkadin is right – the TCR shows from Iraq marked the first time in history that a “full-length non-news show was filmed, edited and broadcast from a combat zone.” :)

No problem, Karenatasha. :) I really should have looked it up before I posted.

Glad to know I actually knew what I was talking about. (For once!)

Oh yeah! I forgot! It’s awesome that your a Mythbusters fan too! :D Do you know when the Mythbusters will be showing new episodes? I’ve really been missing it lately. :(
And it’s great to know that Adam is a fan of TCR! Although I always presumed that he (and the rest of the Mythbusters) were. Because all the cool kids are, you know! ;P
Shout Out (Hey!):

Yes! I love Mythbusters – my brother initially got me into the show a long while back. After a little bit of digging, all I could gather was that new episodes will probably start again in October; I guess they’re in the middle of a mid-season break. And you’re right – it just makes sense that Adam and the gang would be fans of TCR. I actually would love it if Adam and Jamie were guests on the show…*hint hint to the TCR Booking Department* :)
Shout Out (Hey!):

I would love to see the Mythbusters on TCR also! It would be great – I’d especially love to see the adorably funny Grant with another robot creation!
Glad to hear from Adam that the writers were there. I wish there were more coverage of them. I found what seemed to be a photo but couldn’t find an article to go with it.

Mr. Arkadin, I whole-heartedly agree that TCR should have won the Emmy for directing over SNL, but I’m a life-long Betty White fan, so I’m happy for her.
WHOOOO-HOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CONGRATULATIONS, COLBERT WRITERS!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Juice, I love Betty White too! I was just upset SNL’s director was getting an Emmy because of White’s greatness & not on his own merit, IMHO.

My apologies, Mr. A. I re-read your post, and agree with you about the SNL director. That’s what I happens when I try to be verbal before the morning java has kicked in!

Yay! Thanks for the info Rein! Now I know to watch the show on Friday (I would have watched it if either Stephen or the writers were there to accept). And I heard that both Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman were there last night. I love those guys – I’m kind of addicted to Mythbusters. And it’s awesome to hear that Savage is a fan of TCR. :)

Yay, yay, yay for the writers – and, of course, Stephen!

Now onto to the BEST SHOW award!

While I’m thrilled, of course, for TCR writers, I feel bad for Team Coco. They may not have deserved it as much as Stephen, Barry Julien, et al, but it would have been a delicious slap in the face of NBC. I just can’t believe that Jim Hoskinson got passed over again. Just look at the incredible job he did directing from Baghdad: getting the sound to work, the timing of the video clips like the one with President Obama and most of all, getting a “Formidable Opponent” to work. Amazing. He was robbed.
Shout Out (Hey!):

I totally agree. Jimmy was robbed! He will win eventually though.

Congratulations to the amazingly talented writers of The Report. I can’t think of a group of people more deserving. I’m DYING to watch the acceptance speech but I’ll be tuning in for the E! broadcast for sure. Thanks for the listing!
And yes, Fangirl’s Nightmare indeed!
Shout Out (Hey!):

I’m so happy!!!!!! I love this, because now if Daily Show wins for best show again, at least they each get one, like in ’08 (at least I think it was ’08…). I’m still really bummed they didn’t have this award during the regular broadcast. It seems so anti-climatic, but at least we get to see it on Friday. And I always love what both winning, and even not-winning awards brings to the writing table for Colbert’s character. Hopefully we’ll get another gloating toss out of this! I’m a little worried about Conan and SNL for the big award, but I still think it comes down to TDS and TCR. I’m always happy with either, but I think I’ll be thrilled beyond measure if Stephen finally gets it.

What great news to hear! And we need more balloon drops. Congratulations to Stephen and his wonderful, brilliant writers. The world is a brighter shinier place with them all in it.
Shout Out (Hey!):

That’s awesome. I’m so glad they won. And for the perfect episode, too. Despite that haircut also being a fangirl’s nightmare. They sure earned it. I’m glad those Emmys got featured on TCR, at least. :)

Unless my program guide is lying to me, for those of you interested in watching the writers’ win, the Creative Arts Emmys will air on E! tomorrow at 1pm Eastern. It’s weird that it’s airing in the afternoon – I was thinking it would be on during the evening. They must really not want people to watch it. :(
