EPISODE NUMBER: 6101 (August 11, 2010)
GUESTS: David Finkel
SEGMENTS: Moral Compass 5000 Action Center, Current Events
VIDEOS: Wednesday, August 11, 2010
I have to be honest – I’m still trying to figure out what Michelle Obama’s trip to Spain had to do with Newt Gingrich (I even rewound the video to see if I had missed some kind of segue or something). I did, however, love how the graphics on the Moral Compass 5000 fell over when Stephen tilted the screen. And we got the elusive Double Snoopy tonight! Whoo hoo!
Current Events always simultaneously amuses and horrifies me. I can only imagine how painful it would be to get an eyeful of bright light from one of those new tazers, or worse, a shirtful of Cinnabon icing from a Gla-zer. Diabetic coma in 3 … 2 … 1 …
Guest David Finkel was quite interesting as he told the story of how his book came about. It’s mind boggling to think what our troops over there in Iraq and Afghanistan have to do on a daily basis.
What did all of you think of tonight’s episode?

- I don’t care about the cost – I take more expensive trips to the bathroom. Toilet paper is too scratchy, I use first editions.
- Cold-Stone stupid. That’s stupid mixed in with a Snicker’s bar.
- Newt is so pro marriage he can’t stop doing it, and he’s so morally upright that he’s only had sex after he was married, just not always to the woman he was married to.
- Now, according to his second wife, Maryanne, the night before Newt dumped her, he gave a big speech about family values, so she asked him, and I’m paraphrasing here, how do you give that speech and at the same time be such a douchebag p**sy hound?
- So if you’re still feeling randy, try cloning your wife. That way you can get some strange that’s still strangely familiar.
- Or if you don’t have a bunny rabbit, squirt it into the eyes of Snoopy. I’ve done better Snoopies.
- Although officers report she sure can jump.
- Remember, the 911 call said she might hurt herself and I believe that should be left to professionals.
- Last but not least, folks, a heartwarming tale. Actually, it heats up all of the organs to a certain degree.
- He didn’t just incapacitate that bear. He made it break dance.
- I spent almost a week in camp victory in saddam’s palace. My mattress was a little too hard some nights.
i know i was watching the segment and hes talking abt michelle obama and then all of a sudden he is talking abt newt. i thought i had just spaced out for a bit- glad to know it wasnt just me :D

The segue is “I guess she means the gulf between what she says and what she does” But, yeah it was a bit jarring.
i LOVE Stephen’s take on WWJD re: Moral Compass 5000. I just laughed out loud on that one.

Actually, the segue wasn’t jarring to me, because I’d already read reports of the Gingrich interview and ex-wife Marianne’s damning words. So I knew where Stephen was going with that! (A thank you to my friend who called my attention to Newt’s news.)

The segue was “the gulf between what she says and what she does.” The First Lady had said that everyone should go to the Gulf and then she went to Spain . Newt Gingrich gives talks about the sanctity of marriage while planning to leave his wife for another woman (once again). But who do you think Rove, Beck, and Malkin are going to call out?
Was anyone else surprised to see Stephen completely drop character at the end of the interview? It was obvious how touched he was by the subject.

I wasn’t surprised by it because he’s made it clear how he feels about the troops. I was kind of expecting it really but it was still nice to see. That was a very engrossing interview.
LOVED the Moral Compass 5000 Action Center! Since I have nothing nice to say about Newt Gingrich, I’ll just leave it at that.

Yeah, I saw that line about Michelle, but it was such a Going from A to Q kind of segue. It just flowed oddly, you know?
And I agree, “Stephen” was definitely in the shadows during the entire interview, which didn’t really surprise me considering how much Stephen supports the troops.

Loved the Moral Compass segment, and yay for the return of Snoopy! As soon as he started drawing the smiley/angel face, I knew he would add in Snoopy. :)
And I do agree that the Michelle Obama bit had a hard segue into the Newt Gingrich bit, but Stephen always does a little opening segment before getting into the big one before the first commercial break, and the Michelle one was the opener. Since all of it had to do with “what’s morally acceptable in America,” Stephen couldn’t really go from one into the other with a turn to a different camera. I think that’s why the transition was a bit weird to me. Anyway.
The David Finkel interview was really great. I knew “Stephen” would sort of hang in the background for that one, and I appreciated it. I also love how Stephen ended the interview.

Snoopy, Tasers, and Bears! Oh my! :)
And now for something completely different: Is their anybody else who watches TCR & TDS on the TV machine? If so, are you thinking about gouging your eyes out if you see another commercial for the David Hasselhoff roast? Just wondering.

“If so, are you thinking about gouging your eyes out if you see another commercial for the David Hasselhoff roast?”
Yes, yes, OH MY GOD YES. I could care less that they’re going to “Hassle the Hoff.” I’m just glad it’s this weekend so that I don’t have to hear about it anymore! :P
