EPISODE NUMBER: 6097 (August 3, 2010)
GUESTS: Laura Ingraham
SEGMENTS: Brett Favre Retires Again, Consumer Protection Agency – Barney Frank, Republican Gubernatorial Primary Battle Watch ’010 – Basil Marceaux.com, Laura Ingraham
VIDEOS: Tuesday, August 3, 2010
On days where I don’t watch the show before I head off to work, I really feel like the whole day is just … off somehow. So having to wait a whole day before watching tonight’s show was just a smidge painful for me.
Did anyone else catch that the word in the opening segment changed from SCILF to TBD? I guess the graphic design team is on a bit of an acronym kick this summer. I’d like to second Stephen’s sentiment that if Favre unretires again that I will stab him, in the other eyeball, with a broom handle. Barney Frank’s appearance was just hysterical – he kept catching Stephen off guard and making him smile just a smidge. His crack about Stephen not being able to tell the difference between Chase Manhattan and a tiger was just snarkilicious.
But for me, no doubt the best part of the show was Stephen’s complete nailing of Laura Ingraham. Stephen drilled it home with the comment, “Obama is making the most hideous, hackneyed racial stereotypes in here.” So lovely.
What did all of you like best about tonight’s show?
- Brace yourself, folks, because the thinkable has happened.
- That guy can really cry in the clutch.
- But if you do unretire again, let me be first to say, I will stab you in the eyeball with a broken broom handle.
- Now, yes, banks abuse their customers, but customers don’t need a new agency. Just a safe word. Like “Pumpkin Patch”. Just shout that and the bank knows to take the clamp off your balls.
- Get a subcommittee hearing room already.
- That just means if I don’t make my payments on time, I have to confess to the murder of a drifter.
- Barney Frank: The trouble is analogies like that make no sense.
Stephen: Well, that make no sense to you because I just won. - Barney Frank: And I’m still trying to figure out why you can’t tell the difference between Chase Manhattan and a tiger. If I were you, I would be very careful going to the zoo.
- On behalf of all the heavily armed mentally ill, I thank you, sir, and for using the more sensitive, politically correct term, nutcakes.
- Now, there are a lot of complex policy details in there, but I think the main takeaway is this: It will take nothing less than 25 armed men to bring down Basil Marceaux.com.
- Basil Marceaux.com. promises not to perform dental on you. Although I would not be surprised if this guy could hook you up with a tank of nitrous.
- You know why? Because I’m flexible.
- What are the odds that Barack Obama’s private musings would completely and perfectly match up with the narrative that the right is trying to push about him?
- This writing is terrible! The most banal turns of phrase … I thought this was supposed to be a post-racial America. Obama is making the most hideous, hackneyed racial stereotypes in here.
- Speaking for me, I’d go second base, what about you?
Basil Marceaux.com never fails to delight. Oh, if only Basil would come on to the Report, to thank Stephen for the Colbert Bump…

The Laura Ingraham interview was just beautiful. A classic ambush, started off all nice and friendly and then – BAM. Stephen’s takedown was so good I actually yelled “BUUUURRRRRRRNNNNNNNN!!!!” at my TV at the end of the interview. :P
I also loved Stephen’s attempt to sabotage the Republican Primaries, can’t wait to see what happens there! Barney Frank was brilliant too – hell, let’s just call the whole episode amazing and be done with it!

I assure you–you were not the only one yelling joyfully at the TV screen! I believe there were a few declarations of love to Stephen. :) He really nailed her in the cleverest of ways.
All around a great show, between the wonderful left (Barney Frank) and the hideous right (Ingraham). And Basilm Marceaux too!

I just looked at the Banshee’s twitter account and there NO mention of going on TCR or having been on Colbert. I guess I can’t blame her, all things considered. ;P Wow! That voice has to be the reason God invented duct tape. Man! She’s annoying! Awful! *Shivers*
I truly hope, even “IF” Basil loses, Stephen keeps doing segments on him. Basil is just solid GOLD! More Basil! :D

That interview with Laura Ingraham was such a perfect example of this thinly veiled satire that Stephen is an expert at. It was great to watch and had me cheering for Stephen the whole time! :D

Yay for having Barney Frank back on the show! He really brought it to that interview; I loved all of his little jabs at Stephen. That whole interview was a real treat.
Those Basil Marceaux.com videos are crazy hilarious – I laughed so hard at that segment last night that my face hurt. But hands down, the best part of the show was the Laura Ingraham nailing, er, interview. There are three unwritten rules guests should follow when “Stephen” interviews them: 1. Do not suck up to “Stephen.” 2. Do not try to out-funny Stephen. 3. Do not look for sympathy from the audience against Stephen. Ichabod Crane’s Banshee Widow broke all three of those rules, which just made the hole she was digging for herself even deeper. I think my favorite line of Stephen’s was, “This writing is terrible! …Obama is making the most hideous, hackneyed racial stereotypes in here!” I truly loved the way Stephen handled that interview. The whole thing was pitch-perfect. :)

HAHA! That was great wasn’t it! I particularly loved the way he said “BANAL.” :P

Ha! Keith Olbermann just admitted on Twitter that he dated Ichabod’s widow twice in 1998! Quote: “I was young and stupid.” Poor Keith! :)

Laura Ingram has just become my No. 1 favorite nailing, besting that of Billy Kristol back in ’06. What is it about these guys who think they’re smart enough (and funny enough) to try to take comedic control of an interview from Stephen? It really just makes him relish going for the juggler… with the skill of a surgeon, of course. I can almost see his eyes saying “thank you for making this easier for me to do this”.
Andrew Sullivan merely called it “the busting of Laura Ingram” on his blog, lol

Basil Marceaux.com was a delight to watch.
Barney Frank was awesome. Can’t believe he kept a straight face the whole time during their banter. I love that he’s able to make Stephen smile.
The nailing of Ichabod Crane’s banshee wife was even more delightful to watch. This is one of those interviews where Stephen goes straight for the jugular. Wow. The moment she started talking about the two of them having “moments” in Dartmouth, I knew already the interview wasn’t going to go well for her. Sucking up to Stephen and trying to be as funny as or funnier than him will totally not work. It totally backfired. The excerpts I found online weren’t even funny or satirical. I found them disrespectful and not entertaining or even informative. And as Media Matters pointed out, it’s lazy right-wing fiction.
P.S. Hey Laura, a banshee is a female spirit in Irish mythology, OK?

Oh Basil Marceaux.com, welcome back! Shine on, you crazy diamond!
Barney Frank was simply awesome. He and Eleanor Holmes Norton are prefect examples of how to handle “Stephen”.
Laura Ingraham simply got nailed. It was a glorious, perfect and bloody take-down by Stephen. Yeah, don’t think we didn’t hear you try and say banshees were Native American, Laura. We all *know* they were a fantastic UK punk band fronted by Siouxsie Sioux.
Breathtaking stuff. <3
P.S. There’s a piccy of Ingraham and what appears to be a lifesize cutout of Stephen on the front page of her website. :P

*rushes to Ingraham’s website to see where lifesize cutouts of Stephen can be obtained*
Bloody hell, what an awful website! Looks like a page of dodgy classified ads. And now I’ve given Ingraham the satisfaction of another page hit in the process. Grrrrrrr! I’m back off to BasilMarceaux.com instead…

The Barney Frank interview was great fun but the interview with Ingraham was absolutely beautiful! Such a satisfying nailing.
I noticed TBD in place of SCILF when the show came back Monday night. I wonder what the writers will come up with next for that spot. It’s become a new game!

I’m with Jennie – this has become my all time favorite nailing. It was like watching Ingraham incrementally swallowed by quicksand, blathering all the while as she goes down. (What was up with the banshee thing as some sort of offense to Native Americans? Huh?? Wha??) Stephen spared no brazen, pointed insults, and yet was never mean – it’s the magic of having the veil of the character to work through.
And Barney Frank gets points for one of the best lines of the night, too: “If I were you, I would be very careful going to the zoo.” Great show!!

The Ingraham segment….no, no, let’s call it what is was…TAKEDOWN finally loaded properly online here, and it was damn worth my fidgetting over the last 24 hours!
But this whole show was brilliant, and worth choking on my toast over breakfast for. Barney Frank – bless. And surely, SURELY, the inimitable Basil Marceaux has to be a guest before long….c’mon Baz, go for the C-Bump!

I got a kick out of the Chyrons under Stephen and Barney: first describing their location as “New York” and “Boston”, respectively, but later as “America” and “Massachusetts”.
