EPISODE NUMBER: 6093 (July 27, 2010)
GUESTS: Kevin Kline
SEGMENTS: BP’s Live Hayward Cam, That’s the Way I Leak It – Tom Blanton, Tip of the Hat/Wag of the Finger
VIDEOS: Tuesday, July 27, 2010
Oh, what a delightfully wonderful episode tonight! Any reference to old Nintendo games is a win in my book. I need to go hunting for an old Nintendo 64 at Salvation Army so I can get my old skool Mario on – that was some serious fun! So Hayward’s getting let go in October? That’s just nuts. I wish I had a job where they gave me a ton of money and I could just sit there and wait to get fired. Tom Blanton was a fun interview – he was obviously an it-getter, although I do think he tried a bit hard.
The philodendron piece was quite amusing. But let’s keep the discussion of Stephen’s stamen in the comments to a minimum, shall we? I was thinking about how I was a fan of Kevin Kline, and I realized, okay, what movies did I enjoy him in? Well, “A Fish Called Wanda” obviously. And “I Love You To Death”. But then I realized … well, other than those two movies, I can’t think of anything else he’s been in that I’ve seen. But dammit, I’m still a fan! I guess it’s like being a fan of “Weird Al” Yankovic and saying, “Yeah, I love that song ‘Eat It!’” But I digress. I thought Kevin Kline was funny and charming, and his articulation-off and Shakespeare Without Word games with Stephen were just adorkable. It was so fun to watch him play along, and to not drop the serious affront for one moment during the segment.
Because I loved Stephen’s Shakespearan grunting so much, I decided to featured him both as King Lear and as Julius Caesar in the screen caps today. What did you think of tonight’s episode?

- It would have to be a plumber with extensive underwater experience, and he would want to stay anonymous given his disturbing anti-turtle stance.
- There’s Hayward still tragically CEOing all over BP, and here comes the robotic arm trying to hand him a pink slip. But he’s not taking it. And, oh, the maneuver has failed.
- BP is left with only one option, strategically setting parts of Tony Hayward on fire.
- Although based on this recent interview he gave to British television, he’s [Assange] either hiding out in heaven or that place where the Progressive auto lady lives. which I believe is called “insurgetory”.
- This information and more is also available on my new web site, ObviLeaks, where you can find such ground-breaking revelations as “Lindsay Lohan Troubled”, “Hungry Monkey: Banana Good” and “Bear S**ts In Woods Reports Catholic Pope”.
- I say you are never too young to worry about the size of your fat ass. Hey, chunk-o, how about squeezing those butter rolls out of that stroller and try walking for a change. You’re almost 20 weeks. Or at least put that spitting up to good use and get an eating disorder.
- Which is why I’m giving a big tip o’ my hat to Dick Cheney for getting one step closer to joining the legion of the undead, where he will rule the night and feast on human flesh.
- The pump also requires an energy source, either an external battery, or in Cheney’s case, demon’s ichor pumped from the subterranean lair of the pre-Euclidian god of madness Yog-Sothoth. They were roomies in college
- That means that a marijuana plant has a better memory than the people who smoke it.
- But now the idea that my philodendron can remember all this stuff is humiliating, and I’m sure it’s shared many a hearty laugh with my ficus tree over the size of my stamen. I trusted you!
- If a man gets paid to be with a woman, it shouldn’t be for showing his emotions. It should be for tagging that thing.
- Oh what to do to die today at a minute or two ’til two, A thing distinctly hard to say yet harder still to do, For they’ll beat a tattoo at twenty to two, With a rattatta tattatta tattatta too, And the dragon will come when he hears the drum At a minute or two ’til two today, At a minute or two ’til two.
I feel like Stephen was trying to hold back his own amusent and laughter the entire show- which makes it so funny and silly to watch. Many almost character break! Really enjoyed the interview w/ Kevin Kline. He did play along very wellplus mentioned he was a fan of Stephen’s! Me, too! (also- Stephen pandering for movie roles?!? Love it!)

I really shouldn’t type on my iTouch so early in the a.m. Accept my apologies. The words should read: amusement, breaks, and fan of Stephen. Yikes! ;)

I can’t get enough of his Hayward hatred. And the plant thing was intensely silly. But wow, the interview!

Loved, Loved, Loved the interview! Could watch those two for as long as they wanted to sit there… I would like to see what was cut, as well. Funny about Kevin Kline movies: I can think of a ton of them, (In&Out, French Kiss, De-Lovely, Soapdish, Sophie’s Choice, Prairie Home Companion, Dave, My Life as a House…) but most of them I loved his performance but not the movie so much.
I’m one of those who talks to plants all the time (need to get a life?). How cute to call his plant Phil
I need some understanding the line about Assange when Stephen said “Friend of the show and enemy of ???” I listened 4 times and still couldn’t catch the last word there.

“How cute to call his plant Phil”
I’m sure his plant is as Irish as Stephen, and has a full name: Phil O’Dendron

Don’t forget The Big Chill! Wow, I am really showing my age with that one.

I had to listen to it a couple of times, too! I think he said “Enemy of the sun.”

I’m going to have Grunt Shakespeare on a mental loop all day. Whenever I need a joy break (sounds so much nicer than “mental health break”, don’t you think?), I’m playing that.
I love it when guests have both the inclination and the ability to roll with Stephen’s punches. You get one or the other often enough, but the combo is killer. (I was telling DB, this is pretty much the reason I’d basically sell a kidney to see a similar interview with Stephen and Hugh Laurie.)

Oh yeah, can you imagine how utterly fantastic it would be to see Stephen interview Hugh Laurie? That’s one of my TCR interview fantasies.
Can’t wait to get home and watch this show! I love Kevin Kline.

I believe the phrase was “Friend of the show and enemy of sunlight”, referring to the fact that he’s so pale he’s translucent.

That was such an awesomely silly show. I especially loved Kevin Kline and the plant in the bin segment. I’ll definately be watching this show again!!

The interview with Kevin was deliciously adorable. I loved the repartee, and it just kept getting better, especially when Stephen started “Oh what a to-do to die today” Mwah!
I found the setting Tony Hayward on fire graphic disturbing, though I got the point.
I did enjoy the bear graphic of the ObviLeaks logo. I thought Stephen would have more of a “Bears!!” reaction to it.

The whole show was funny! I really enjoyed the interview with Kevin Kline though. They played off one another very well and it was very entertaining to watch.

If you don’t mind 2 hours of music from the 1980′s, you MUST see “The Big Chill”. It’s now considered a classic. An excellent movie IMHO but also a source of trivia on several levels:
- it was the 1st or 2nd movie for all of the actors (all of whom went on to MUCH bigger and better things)
- who played “Alex” – the friend who died?
- it was done on such a shoestring budget that they could only afford to pay for 1 song and the rest were songs they could get for free – music publishers were KICKING themselves once it became famous

I agree, a great movie, and for many people the music is a big selling point. However, it’s all 1960′s Motown music (not 1980′s). (Also, most of the cast had been in several other films, though this was certainly a break-out role for many of them).
The songs were huge hits – I can’t imagine they would get rights to those for free. I can’t find a reference for it, but it’s my recollection that the only weird bit about the music was that they were initially unable to obtain rights to include some of the more famous songs in the soundtrack album. Once the film became a big hit, follow-up albums included some of those songs, as well as other Motown era hits.

I had to watch the Shakespeare competition twice. So great!
I love when fake news and real news get all tangled. Last night SC suggested that the New York Times was the enemy…but what about when it reports on the Shakespeare-off from the show last night?

What a geeky episode lol. It was so great!!! My favorite line of the night, that nearly made me wake the whole house was “let’s see you make chlorophyll in there motherf***er!” Not a sentence I ever thought I’d hear! And the interview was joy-tastic!

I loved that line too! I started laughing so hard when I heard it, especially since I have a feeling it was ad-libbed. :)

Taping ReporT!!
I got in line at 3pm, and we (a friend went with me) were the 4th and 5th people in line. We made friends with the interns, who were super nice and handed out free water bottles and such. Then after chatting with the guys ahead of us in line for a couple of hours, we got into the studio at 7 (we got pretty great seats – in the third row on the right side closest to the interview table). The warm-up comic, Julian McCullough, was absolutely hilarious and got everyone even more pumped for the show. Then Stephen came out! He was definitely in a good mood – he came bursting out into the studio, ran around a couple of times and high-fived the people in the front row. Some audience questions: a girl asked if he finds a lot of people who don’t know he’s doing a character and he said yes and then gave the example of Sen. Bob Kerrey. Someone asked why his middle name was Tyrone (which I already knew the answer to lol). One guy asked if Bush said anything to him right after the WHCC, and Stephen said Bush told him, “Well done.” but said it like he was “turning the burner on high”, ha.
I got so excited during the opening because I noticed Paul Dinello consulting with Stephen and Tom Purcell. That man seriously never ages; he looks fantastic. There were three, count ‘em, THREE character breaks! All of them were absolutely adorable :D. Two in the opening (when Stephen says something like, “you wouldn’t believe what these people have endured” at the top of the show, that’s what he’s referring to) and one during the first segment, but they just re-ran the news clip about WikiLeaks and started over from there.
Stephen was definitely enjoying himself during the show – the audience was really great and energetic the whole time (Lord knows I was cheering loud enough haha), and he started laughing really hard after the Tip/Wag segment after he was attacked by the plant. Kevin Kline was an amazing guest! As soon as he walked to his seat during the 2nd commercial break, he got a standing ovation and cheers from all of us in the audience, and Stephen was smiling at the fact that we were cheering so much for him. The interview went very smoothly. Stephen and Kline were having so much fun with the Shakespeare impressions that they did two more right after Stephen first ended the interview – the Julius Caesar and the Falstaff ones were the ones added in, I think because of Stephen’s great reaction at the end. It also seemed like he and Kevin got along great because they were talking to each other for a while after the interview ended.
Okay, here was the highlight of the night for me. I met Stephen! First, Paul Dinello came out and he stopped for a picture and we chatted for a couple of minutes before he headed to his car. Unbelievably nice and super funny :). Then, we managed to meet up with Stephen and he was more than happy enough to stop for a picture. It was, hands down, the best night of my entire life! Sorry if the taping reporT is a bit scattered – I tried to go in order as much as possible, I’m still reeling over what happened! *sigh* Amazing. :D

Sorry for the late reply!
As far as what I said or what he said when I met him, it was basically just, “Could we please get a picture, maybe?” “Absolutely! Let’s do it.” and then me saying (a few times, if I remember correctly), “Thank you so much!” There was another girl that was waiting with us, and after I took her picture with her camera, we found out that it didn’t take. Luckily, Stephen heard us say that it didn’t work and then wanted to come back and do it again.
You know how you always hear people say how unbelievably nice he is? He is absolutely that and then some. It’s quite possible that he is the nicest guy on the planet. :)

Thank you so much for getting back to me, Lockhart43! :)
That’s so fantastic how great he was to you and the other girl. It would have been so easy for Stephen to just keep walking & pretend not to hear what was going on. The fact that he didn’t & came back is at the heart of why he’s so great!
I’m alway happy to hear what a nice guy my (our) hero is. :D
And again Lockhart43, thank you so much! (I’m starting to sound like you talking to Stephen!) :D

Stephen said that it was because when his ancestors lived in Ireland, they lived in Tyrone. He also joked that he was the youngest of 11 children, so they were probably running out of middle names by the time it came to name him, ha.

Thank you so much for the taping report!! Gosh I’ve been spoiled lately, a lot of people have been writing them up. And then I get to go next week!!!! YAY! Unfortunately I will not be seeing the show though. It sounds crazy at first, but my youngest sister (I’m going with my two sisters) isn’t 18 yet and I can’t very well leave her wandering around NYC while I go to the show, or even worse, make her wait at the hotel. BUT, we’re still going to try and meet Paul and Stephen afterwards. I’m really excited about meeting Paul Dinello this time and my sister has a ukulele she named Geoffrey so she’s hoping he’ll sign it. Pretty cute.
I’m so glad you got to meet them both! 3 character breaks is pretty special!

Thanks for sharing! <33

Even though the rest of the show was very good I though the Kevin Kline interview was the best thing on last night. It was great to see how thrilled Stephen was to have Kline on the show. He seemed to be beaming & trying to suppress his smile throughout most of the interview. Until the glorious end when he just gave up! :0
Okay Lockhart43, now you have to tell us what you (& the rest of the audience) “endured” last night? :)
Shout Out (Hey!):

From what I can remember, they didn’t cut anything from the Kevin Kline interview, all they did was edit out the first ending and add in the second one they did where Stephen did Julius Caesar and Kline did Falstaff. In the first cut of it, I believe Kline did Hamlet, and Stephen did Richard III. Both of them were hilarious, but the ones that they kept in at the end were the funniest. :)
And what we “endured” haha was the fact that Stephen messed up twice during the intro and had to re-do it. I was totally okay with that though – those character breaks were adorable!

I loved the entire show. I had a really hard time voting for just one segment. I finally went with the Kevin Kline interview. Not only is he a great actor, but he can sing, too. I just heard that “The Pirates of Penzance” is going to be released soon. When Stephen said that he never turns down movie roles, I couldn’t help thinking that that’s why he did “The Love Guru.” I realize that he was the only funny part of that movie, but maybe he should be a bit more selective. LOL.

That entire was just so FUN and so full of joy! Stephen looked liked he was clearly enjoying himself throughout, like DB said – just on the brink of a character break! And that interview with Kevin Kline was absolute gold. As soon as they started the annunciation thing, I knew it was going to be a fun one! :D
Really, really glad that Jon & Stephen are back. :)

Oh lockhart, you lucky lucky fan! At the end of the show, I was thinking how great it would’ve been to be able to see that one. I was also hoping someone would provide a taping report. Thank You. If you didn’t already, you should go over to the Colboards and post it there.
I love Kevin Kline now!! They should have him on again with Jeff Goldblum. They could all do something. Kevin and Jeff were in The Big Chill so they know each other.

There was not a moment of this episode that wasn’t purely golden. the plant, and his random swearing. i giggled like a school girl!
I loved it so much, I’m going to go and watch it again right now! That makes 3 times today. well, since yesterday…
