Stephen Colbert in the Zeitgeist – July 15, 2010

zeitgeist2Greetings, Zoners! These two-week TCR breaks sure do make the summer drag, don’t they? But we’re almost through the first week, and hopefully the second week will fly by and we’ll see Stephen back at his desk looking tanned and rested, ready to take on all the lunacy in the world. Until then, here are a few news items to help tide us over and get us through the summer doldrums, your zeitgeist for July 15th.

The Even Stevphen reunion

  • TV Guide’s Top Moments for last week included a pretty gratifying (and frankly kind of obvious) Number 1: “Best Reunion: When Steve Carell stopped by The Colbert Report Thursday, he and his former co-star spun comedy gold when they resurrected their famous Daily Show segment, ‘Even Stepvhen.’ In a truly hilarious battle of the (obviously fake) egos, Colbert called interviewing Carell a ‘vacation from substance’; Carell compared being on Comedy Central to being in the witness relocation program. P.S. If Carell insists on quitting The Office next year, can Comedy Central please try and make The Carell Corral happen?”

San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro

  • MySanAntonio.com has Mayor Julián Castro’s reaction to his appearance on TCR: “‘It was great. He was very nice,’ Castro said in a phone chat after his eight minutes on the satirical late-night show. ‘I didn’t get beat up or anything.’” He also said the questions were “pretty much what I expected.”

Loyola Law School

  • Remember Stephen’s take on Loyola Law School’s decision to inflate grades to help their students in the job market? Loyola’s dean, Victor Gold, has a response to the segment (scroll down a bit to read the entire response): “…the humor of the Colbert Report’s ‘Law 101′ segment on the grade curve change at Loyola obscured the real reason behind it: Loyola’s old grade curve was among the lowest in the nation because many other schools had already raised their curves.” (via Above the Law)

Late night ratings

  • This article from the Associated Press looks at the falling viewership for late-night TV, noting that almost all of the late-night shows have seen a drop in ratings, although “Comedy Central’s [Jon] Stewart and Stephen Colbert are essentially drawing the same numbers as last year.”

The WØRD app

  • Got one of those fancy new iPads? The WØRD app is now available for your iPad. Coming in the near future: The WØRD app for Android and BlackBerry.

Completely random randomness

  • From Nerd Approved: the perfect slingshot for Stephen Colbert. I can just imagine a young “Stephen” keeping one of these eagle slingshots on hand.
  • Do you recall this photo that was posted earlier this month after Stephen mentioned how much he loves reddit? Here’s a more hypnotic version of the same pic. It’s fun if you’re into getting dizzy.
  • While we’re on the subject of reddit, for a brief period earlier this month — after Stephen’s shout-out — the web site changed its name and had a new logo.

Thanks for all the links Ann G.!
Also, I want to mention that Stephen was the first thing talked about in an interview between Rachel Maddow & Richard Holbrooke on July 13th. Holbrooke said Rachel’s recent shows from Afghanistan were the best broadcasts from a war zone since Stephen did his show from Iraq! Rachel laughed & said “Hi Stephen” in her cute, little, embarrassed way.
I thought it was pretty cool all-around. :)

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +1

First of all, I want one of those slingshots.

Secondly, I have a love/hate relationship with grade inflation. As a student, it’s almost impossible to hate that little extra cushion. But at the same time, it bothers me that applying yourself less and earning the same grade is becoming increasingly acceptable. But I can’t pretend like Stephen speaking at Loyola’s 2011 commencement wouldn’t be a great idea. ‘Cause then he can add “Attorney at Law” or “Esquire” to his name…Sir Dr. Stephen T. Colbert, D.F.A, Esq. just sounds right to me. :)

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +1

Are you serious?! HAHA! I’m going to have nightmares after looking at those! Especially that bat! Freaky scary! :P
