I’m sure by now that the many fans of Stephen Colbert have watched his segment from the excellent PBS Faces of America series, but did you know that host (and friend of the show) Henry Louis Gates, Jr. has released a book by the same title this week?
The book, published by NYU Press, is a companion piece to the series, and it appears to go into more detail about the interviewees than was revealed on the show. Best of all, you can preview the Stephen Colbert Faces of America chapter here (it will look like a widget, but click “Preview”).
And don’t forget, you can still watch Stephen’s sections from the PBS series. Here’s a teaser for you all, in case you still haven’t seen it:
I’m trying so hard not to buy new books for a while, dang it!! Gaaaaates! *fist shake*. Such a beautiful chapter about Stephen’s family, though :).

I’m not looking, because I want the fun of going to the bookstore and seeing it in all it’s full glory lol. Thank you so much for letting me know! I won’t be able to buy it (saving up for a trip to New York, I won’t be buying anything frivolous for a LONG time) but I can sit in one of their comfy chairs and read the chapter on dear Mr. Colbert.

I was going to click the link, but I like @marleygirl84′s idea of reading the chapter in a comfy place at the bookstore. :) Thanks for that!

Books-I-still-haven’t-read-on-my-bookshelf be damned, I will absolutely be buying this book. And I will be reading the Stephen chapter from the comfort of my Barnes And Noble before I purchase it (Thanks marleygirl84! That idea sounds too good not to do). :)

Ms.Interpreted thank you so much for finding this!
I read the twenty plus pages & loved them all! It was particularly gratifying to read how much Gates loves Stephen & the Report. (He’s a real Zoner!) :D
It’s also quite moving & more in-depth about his father and brothers death then I’ve ever read or heard before.
Thanks again Ms.I. Your the best! :)

I so love what he says about his mother: “She’s bright…not just intelligent, but bright: she shines.” A good description of him, too.

Wow, Mr Gates really wrote that amazingly well. I liked how he explained and brought context to all of the historical events- that proved very helpful to me, since all of my history classes brushed over Irish history way too fast.
His writing really brought those events to life, with all the impact and emotions they carried. The sadness of the tragedy, the inspiration from those who struggled so much to find a place for themselves, and the impact that the act of becoming American can have on someone and their entire family. It’s a great chapter.
