Episode 6085 (6/29/2010) – Julian Castro

Colbert Report Episode guideEPISODE NUMBER: 6085 (June 29, 2010)
GUESTS: Mayor Julian Castro
SEGMENTS: Supreme Court Justice Sweetness, Stephen Colbert’s Sport Report Special Report: Basketcase – Stephie’s Knicks Hoop-De-Doo, Lube Job
VIDEOS: Tuesday, June 29, 2010

Let’s be honest, kids – today’s episode was just sexy. Any time Sweetness makes an appearance, the fangirls are most definitely going to be appreciative. And yay for Judge Sweetness! Normally during the off-site interviews, the lighting isn’t so hot and sometimes Stephen just doesn’t quite look like Stephen. But the whole interview with coach Mike D’Antoni, I just kept thinking, dang he looks good, and his flash of that brilliant smile just added to the eye candy. The “Why didn’t you try that this year?” line was such a clean hit that I’m surprised the New York Knicks coach still had his shirt on. Also, a tip of the hat for the return of the black panther tattoo.

While I understand BP’s angle of trying to spin some positive out of this negative, the PR piece they did about the booming travel economy was just way, way too hard to swallow. And the videos were even worse. I’ve heard good things about mayor Julian Castro, and thought he presented himself well. I can’t believe Stephen asked him for his papers, that was just wrong on so many levels. In the best way, of course. I also enjoyed hearing Castro’s story about how he changed the pronunciation of his name in college, since that’s basically the same thing Stephen did when he went to Northwestern.

What did you all think of the episode tonight?

Stephen Colbert's Sport Report Special Report: Basketcase - Stephie's Knicks Hoop-De-Doo, Part I

  • It’s like watching senators dry.
  • Jimmy, release the ballons. Jimmy, next time let’s drop the balloons and then I’ll shoot in the air. [Jimmy: Got it.]
  • And I’d like to apologize to my guests for double dipping at last year’s super bowl party.
  • Big news from World Cup soccer – we don’t have to care about it any more!
  • You have got to respect a town willing to lose a basketball star to child famine in Africa.
  • Win. Why didn’t you try that this year?
  • Before I get on board, and obviously this isn’t a dealbreaker for me, what is your Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy. You don’t ask? And you don’t tell. It’s not my business and it’s certainly none of yours. Is it group showers or individual showers?
  • I will play no basketball for $5 million. You are making money. You just made $6 million dollars. Can you afford not to hire me at this point?
  • See, the coral reefs may be destroyed, but the Travelodge ecosystem has never been more vibrant!
  • I assume Dead Swan Lake.
  • Wow, and shaving!
  • Aren’t you trying to have your flan and eat it too?

Wasn’t Sweetness pregnant? Do we know what the gestation period for a gun is?

I thought everything about tonight’s episode was great. I especially loved Julian Castro’s story about changing the pronounciation of his name.

I really love Stephen’s sports glasses. There’s a women in our football (soccer) devision who wears a black pair. We’ve nicknamed her Scuba Steve. I can’t help but want to call him Scuba Stephen when he’s got them on.

I can’t wait for Part II of The Sport Report!!

The edge on the BP jokes could draw blood. It’s mesmerizing and brutal–I highly approve!

i thought the interview with castro was great especially bc stephen was getting into some serious and difficult topics and julian answered them very gracefully.
i dunno if im right abt this but… it seems that ever since that soldier from westpoint came on his show and told him that his salute wasnt right and then stephen replied that he has some elbow prob that the whole arm problem thing has been a very consistent character trait.

anyway this was a wonderful episode or like u said db a sexy episode!

The sarcastic note regarding child famine in Africa and professional basketball was rather bittersweet, I think, whether Colbert meant it to be or not… considering the recent passing of Manute Bol.

Aaron I had not read about Manute Bol – how sad. I loved however seeing Stephen’s outfit with “Doctor C” as my favorite player was Julius Erving and of course Stephen is also a DFA as we know.

I enjoyed the interview and the BP segments continue to be funny yet devastating.

As a New Yorker, I loved, loved, loved Stephen’s “Win. Why didn’t you try that this year?” Hysterical and true. But even more important was that scathing BP report; it shows what I loved best about Stephen: the fact that he really has the courage to hit hard and not pull punches. Just perfect.

The interview was Julian Castro was great, with the added fun of the name change and its similarity to Stephen. Castro was profiled not too long ago in the New York Times, and by the way, the Alamo issue–which wasn’t really delved into that much on the show–is a big one. Castro’s mom was (well, still is) an activist who occupied the site as a protester years ago; Julian is taking a more measured approach in order to be able maintain his political aspirations in Texas. The Times really did grill him on it, but he was able to handle it, albeit very carefully.

Stephen seems more feisty this week – hopefully over his cold. Loved the Doctor C on his t-shirt. All in all, great episode … and TDS was great too. The only way to be better would be to have had a Toss!

Loved the Sport Report Special ReporT! As soon as I realized what it was last night, I’m pretty sure I squealed. The interview with Mike D’Antoni was hilarious, and I loved the “Why didn’t you try that this year?” line. DB, you’re not alone – throughout the entire interview I just kept thinking, “Man, he looks so great in the Nike track suit.” And that screencap is just fantastic – there’s nothing he won’t wear for a joke, I’ve always admired that. Especially loved the sports goggles; I used to wear them when I played basketball in high school. I looked dorky, to say the least. He certainly looks adorkable in them. :)

He seemed like he was in a really great mood last night. And it’s nice to see the black panther tat again!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +2
