Episode 6082 (6/23/2010) – Tim Westergren

Colbert Report Episode guideEPISODE NUMBER: 6082 (June 23, 2010)
GUESTS: Tim Westergren
SEGMENTS: US Defeats Algeria, Yahweh Or No Way – The Blues Brothers & Glenn Beck, Prophet Glenn Beck – Father Guido Sarducci
VIDEOS: Wednesday, June 23, 2010

First, a big shout out (Hey!) to Stephen’s Heston impression. Huzzah to Planet of the Apes references! Glenn Beck’s audacity is only usurped by his stupidity. But I have to admit, it was worth having to put up with the slowest story known to man (twice) to be able to see Father Guido Sarducci for the first time in ages. For those of you who are a bit on the young side, you may not remember his hysterical appearances on Saturday Night Live in the 70′s and 80′s. I have always loved his super dry delivery style and his ability to just roll with lines like “I feel like I should throw a coin at his face and make a wish.” A lot of character guests that come on the show conflict with the character of “Stephen” a bit, but in this case, “Stephen” took a back seat and let Father Sarducci carry the segment and it really worked splendidly.

I’ve been a huge fan of Pandora ever since I downloaded their app on my iPhone. But I listen to the radio station even when I’m sitting at home. My two favorite stations are my Barry Manilow station (don’t judge me) and my Duran Duran/Cars/Thompson Twins station. Helpful hint: Never “like” a Chicago song or you will turn whatever station you are listening to into a Chicago station. Same goes for Beatles. Not that that’s a bad thing. I’m so glad Stephen called out Tim Westergren about not having any of his music on the station. Admit it – you’ve tried to make a Stephen Colbert station, haven’t you? Or is it just me? Oh well, I’ll always have my iTunes playlist. I think being a fan of Stephen’s music also means having a whole lot of bootleg MP3′s. Comedy Central marketing department, why have you not made a CD of Stephen’s musical musings yet?! Get on that!!

What did all of you think of the show tonight?

Confidential to Monogodo: Happy anniversary, sweetie! Bzzzz …

That's my Heston

  • And you don’t want to know what he said about Joe Biden’s ankles in People.
  • I believe Algeria is where allergies come from. Not to mention algebra, and Al Jarreau.
  • 2012, you heard it here first. Get a hairpiece.
  • You know what, I’m not thirsty right now. I’m not cheating, I’m the goalie right now.
  • Just further proof of why he’s archbishop of Brazil.
  • There is more exciting news from Casper the frenzied ghost.
  • Finally, someone is bringing Martin Luther King’s movement back to its conservative, white roots.
  • Maybeweh [Meh]
  • Now as much as I love Glenn, he could speed up his stories a bit. That was like watching paint take itself seriously.
  • I’m sorry. That took so long, *I* had a dream.
  • I thought he was somebody else. Jeff Beck.
  • I feel like I should throw a coin at his face and make a wish.
  • But on the Internet, Hope is the name of a porn actress.
  • If the songs are sexy enough, is it a friend with benefits?
  • I can create a John Phillip Sousa channel? That’s super cool.
  • Mr. Westergren, how many Grammys do I have to win to get on your stupid site?

I love how Americans are suddenly enthused about football, uh, soccer when they actually win a game. ;)
Glenn Beck is stupefyingly (is that a word?) stupid. I hope that in a few months the chipmunks will bury his head for the winter. Holy **** is right! *sigh*
Father Guido was the perfect antidote to Beck, beautiful timing and a wonderful turn of phrase.
A Stephen Colbert Pandora station would be pretty damn awesome, and I really hope someone’s actually made a Sousa channel! As for an official release of Stephen’s musical stylings, my mum asked me if such a thing existed, I had to sadly reply nay, unless the Christmas special on iTunes counts.
Stephen’s still sounding a little croaky, he needs to lay off the GOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLL!s and have some soothing hot lemon drinks. <3

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +2

    • leorabk says:

yah i think hes probably getting a bit sick- and if he is i hope he gets better. but hopefully its just the “ggggggggooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaalllllllllllllllllllllllllllll” line and nothing too serious.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • Michele says:

I’ve loved soccer since I was in high school, which was a very long time ago, and I also find the fair weather fans a bit annoying. They’ll lose interest again shortly after the US team is knocked out which won’t take long. *sigh*

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +1

“I hope that in a few months the chipmunks will bury his head for the winter.”

      Ha! Agreed!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +1

    • lockhart43 says:

I’ve always been a soccer fan, and you’re right – it is funny how Americans get a sudden interest in soccer when the US Team actually does something right. But frankly, I’m just happy the sport is in the spotlight in a positive way, instead of my entire country making fun of it. So I’ll take the enthusiasm, however short-lived it may be. :)

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +2

    • Caoilfhiann says:

When you’re talking about Glenn Beck, the word should be stupidfying.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  2. Gratefull says:

LOL … it was wonderful when Father Guido told Stephen HIS work was very important … LMAO … what a wonderful piece of work …

What a terrific foil Mr. Beck is – so generously offering his idiocy for all to see and Stephen and crew to write so eloquently about.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  3. Michele says:

Fr. Guido Sarducci FTW!!!! :-) That was such a great surprise! I also laughed at the “Maybeweh – Meh” comment and I need to check out Pandora radio.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +1

  4. Eris says:

Man, still sick! Sending warm thoughts Stephen’s way to get well soon.

I love that he’s taking on Glenn Beck about this horrible thing. Father Guido was excellent!

Best joke of the week–”I’m sorry. That took so long, *I* had a dream”

Can’t wait for more astronaut tonight.

DB, Barry Manilow? Wow, the duet must have made your month.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +3

    • MaryLovesColbert says:

I agree! Best joke of the week – that had me laughing really hard!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  5. luvtcr says:

When the second slow-moving clip of Beck rolled, you could hear the audience laughing and it made me wish I was there…I have a feeling Stephen was imitating the speech and I would have loved to have seen it!

    Good show!

    Difference makers: Thumb up +6

    • leorabk says:

OMG i was thinking the exact same thing!!! bc i remember one audience member saying that when the whole long Olympic intro was playing stephen was mouthing along. when i was watching it i was like there really is no other reason for them to laugh unless stephen is mouthing the speech!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +1

  6. wren says:

Ok, I haven’t even finished watching the episode yet, but: FR. GUIDO SARDUCCI!!! Totally made my day!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  7. jennie says:

Father Guido Sarducci – but of course! Who else at the Vatican would say that to GB? I so wish I could have been at the writers meeting when someone came up with that solution. I was a major Father Guido fan back in college and was thrilled to see him in zebra striped vestments. And what a great comedy pair he and Stephen made.

Favorite line had to be “That was like watching paint take itself seriously.” I keep giggling each time I look at the white paint on my office walls. Or maybe seeing Father Guido on TV has induced flashbacks…

I’m going to have to check out Pandora, though a few Colbert offerings would help persuade me.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +2

  8. friedthing says:

I’m a little young to have watched Father Guido Sarducci on SNL, but I remember that Stephen said in Satiristas that Don Novello’s Lazlo Letters were a big early influence on him, so he must have been pretty psyched to have him on the show.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +2

    • MaryLovesColbert says:

Oh! I just got Satiristas for my birthday and I forgot he mentioned Don Novello in there! Too awesome – thanks for the reminder! :D

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  9. nerdygirl says:

I’m still laughing at the Father Guido segment — how awesome was that!? The line about throwing a coin in his face and making a wish had me laughing so loud I was afraid I’d disturb the neighbors. Great show!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +1

  10. Mr. Arkadin says:

A Blues Brothers shout out & Don Novello was just the best! I think friedthing is 100% right about Stephen being thrilled that Novello was on. He seemed to geek out both welcoming and say goodbye to him!
And the reference to the Blues Brothers and the Pope both having Nazi subplots?! LOL! Great!
I think that Glenn Beck takes so long to tell a story because he’s making it up as he goes. I can’t believe that he’s going ahead with his plans to hold a rally on that sacred day. Actually, come to think of it I can. What a blasphemous tw@t!
Also: I’m wondering who Stephen pointed at after his Heston impression? Any zoners there last night?

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +3

    • lockhart43 says:

“I can’t believe that he’s going ahead with his plans to hold a rally on that sacred day. Actually, come to think of it I can.”

Me too. Every time I hear about the latest stupid comment Beck has made or what controversy he’s managed to drum up, I’m never really surprised. And I don’t know how to feel about that. The plus side to the Silver Gopher’s ridiculousness is that it gives Stephen the chance to say exactly what I’m thinking, only in a smarter, less jumbled way. ;)

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  11. Karenatasha says:

What a show! Any ep that destroys Glenn Beck is fine with me, and as usual Stephen decimated him in style. And Father Guido Sarducci was such a wonderful surprise and as funny as I remember him to be. I actually remembered hearing about how much Sarducci had influenced him, an I could see how thrilled Stephen was to have him on. You can usually tell who leaves Stephen awe-struck!

I’ve been a soccer/football fan ever since I became a Brazilianist, and am happy it’s getting some attention. It may be short-lived for the most part, but I think the interest is inching forward. Because the CEO of the company where I work is Brit, we had both the US and the England game on yesterday, in separate rooms, and loads of people came to watch. Frankly, as long as the US team keeps getting better–even if they lose now, as they almost certainly will–I think people will keep an eye on the game.

Am eagerly awaiting fallback position part three tonight! It really promises to be fun.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +2

  12. GB says:

Hey all! This is glenn beck from the CN forum. Thank God for NFZ! Hello fellow fangirls.

I was so excited to see the Blues Bros. get a mention on the show. I have a friend that I am trying to get into the show. She actually sent me an email about the Blues Bros article and said that Stephen will probably mention it on the show. YAY! I got to send her the links to the vids and she likes Fr. Guido so that’s a bonus!

I loved to see Fr. Guido on the show, it’s been so long since I’ve seen him.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +1

  13. lockhart43 says:

I’m really at a loss for words these days about Casper the Frenzied Ghost (love the nickname) and his limitless ability to offend the greater masses. So it’s been wonderful to have Stephen point out Beck’s ridiculousness so brilliantly. And speaking of Casper, I’m too young to have seen Fthr. Guido Sarducci on SNL, so the mid-90s film about the friendly ghost (where he reprised the role and had a cameo) is actually where I know Don Novello from. He was wonderful last night, and I loved his “I feel like I should throw a coin at his face and make a wish.” line! The comment he made to Stephen just before commercial about his work being “wildly important” was great too, for both Stephens. It was a nice compliment to Stephen, and it had to have boosted “Stephen’s” already massive ego. ;)

I like to think Stephen ad-libbed his Heston impression. That was fantastic. :)
