EPISODE NUMBER: 6078 (June 16, 2010)
GUESTS: Devo
SEGMENTS: The WØRD: $tay the Cour$e
VIDEOS: Wednesday, June 16, 2010
Stephen is so very right when he says that hearing that the leak spewing 60,000 barrels a day is heartbreaking. However, since his bet was on “Kraken Released”, he was out of luck for today. Stephen wearing the Devo hat was so cute. I also enjoyed tonight’s WØRD. It’s the first time since hearing about the mineral deposits in Afghanistan that it was pretty clear that maybe we should look at history before jumping in head first to this little mining adventure.
Did you retweet Stephen’s Twitter yet? I’m still amazed that he’s got 1.5 million followers – that’s a ton considering how little publicity has been given to his account.
The highlight of the show for me was Devo. They’ve gotten older, but they’re still funky and weird and full of thoughts about society as they were in their mid-80′s new wave heyday. So many bands from the 80′s who were edgy and unique have turned into Soft Adult Contemporary mainstays, shadows of their former selves. But Devo is out there with their blue hats and a sound plucked straight out of 1983. And yet, their music continues to stay fresh, pardon the pun. If you haven’t taken the opportunity, you should check out their full streaming album on ColbertNation.com. They’ve taken some very contemporary topics and blended them into their neo-new wave offerings. I also love how they took the idea of making music for the masses and turned it into a mirror of what society expects of a band. They had focus groups, and used that fact in promotion of the album. While I’m sure that most major artists so some form of what Devo did, the fact that they do it so blatantly and In Your Face turns their conformity into a unique kind of rebellion.
What did you all think of the show tonight?

- Check your Heartbreaking News From The Gulf Office Pool, and if you guessed 60,000 barrels a day you are tonight’s winner.
- I haven’t seen that many people who hate each other in complete harmony since last summer’s Police reunion.
- I was afraid my hair was going to come out like a Jello mold.
- And just like Idol, America is starting to lose interest.
- Big news. For more, let’s turn to our minerals and commodities analyst, Roger Cornsworth. Roger, what does this mean? “GOOOOLD! GOOOOLD! GOLD, I TELLS YA!”
- And Doocey knows heavy metals. Clearly he’s been exposed to a lot of lead. ["We Eat Paint Chips, You Decide."]
- Twitter hasn’t banned the word Newspaper, and those have already faded into oblivion.
- @StephenAtHome: in honor of oil-soaked birds, ‘tweets’ are now ‘gurgles. http://bit.ly/cIhZNf
- Was Kim Jong Il in the focus group?
- I don’t believe in devolution, I believe in intelligent decline.
i retweeted the tweet as he was telling ppl to retweet it! i wonder if his followers will go up bc of this segment.
although i am part of a newer generation 80′s music is my favorite and i loved hearing devo on the show.

I agree that Devo sounds just as unique and just as good as they did in 1980 when I was skating to Whip It. It was great to see them on the show, still going strong.
Excellent Word too. It’s been a great week of shows so far!

I forgot to mention that I LOL’d at West Virginia being listed as a developing country! There are areas of the state that certainly look that way.

Glad someone else caught West Virginia in the list! Made me spit my drink out. ;)

I grew up in WV, in a non-mining area. The joke was hysterically funny to me but also a good point regarding what mining has done to the state.

Love DEVO but focus groups?? FOCUS GROUPS? *hangs head*
Loved the rakish tilt of the blue cake pan! LOL

I don’t know about all their focus groups, but I participated in the online color survey. It was in no way a standard sleazy marketing move – it was dadaist absurdity, oddity and art. Pure Devo, in online form. And it’s still online. Check it out if you want a taste of focus groups, Devo style: Devo Color Study.

That WAS a curious color study! Thanks for sharing the link!!

They wouldn’t be putting us on, would they?

I was so surprised by Devo, they sounded great!! Performance was perfection. Musically more interesting than their 80′s hits, I can’t believe that I may become a Devo fan 30 years late. (I hope the focus groups had nothing to do with their music, I hate to think my tastes have changed to pop music)

Loved Stephen introducing the band in his Devo Hat and JumpSuit w/ a tie!

I loved Devo! It was great to see them perform and to see Stephen wearing the “energy” hat.
It was also hilarious (and awful of course) to see “Tony Hayward is knighted” on the Office Pool board.

It’s so awesome that $30,000 has been donated so far! I don’t have a Twitter account, so I just posted the link on my facebook and told anyone with Twitter to retweet it.
The Word was great – both of the segments this week on TDS and TCR about the potential mining in Afghanistan have been brilliant. And that Steve Doocy comment about China being “a great big country that needs a whole bunch of stuff” cracks me up every time I hear it!
I’m not a huge fan of Devo, but I definitely appreciate the fact that they’re still a band after all these years and I really enjoyed the performance. Loved the interview as well, especially Stephen’s “I believe in intelligent decline” comment.

That “intelligent decline” comment was classic!
What I love most about the idiocy of Doocy remark is that he’s the SMART ONE on that show! Can you imagine what the brown haired guy who’s not Steve Doocy would have said?! ;}

Haha! I’m think that may be the first time I’ve seen the words “Doocy” and “smart” in the same sentence, with the word “smart” being used in a positive way. :P You’re totally right – I can barely imagine what Brown Haired Guy Who’s Not Steve Doocy would have said, let alone what Blonde Haired Woman Who’s Also Not Steve Doocy would say!
I just love that both TDS and TCR have played that clip of Doocy’s comment – I seriously laugh out loud every time I hear it. The voice that Doocy uses sounds like he’s trying to explain economics to a 3 year old.

And here I was thinking how handsome SC looked tonight -as always- and then he put on the yellow Devo suit -and he *almost* got away with it. But I’ll say this, I wouldn’t and couldn’t wear that in a million years, so props to him!
I still can’t get over that the lead singer from Devo, Mark Mothersbaugh, from the music of my youth is the same guy that does the magic pictures on Yo Gabba Gabba -which my kids watch. What goes around, I expect.

Imagine my surprise a few days ago when I found out that Mark Mothersbaugh, who did the music for my favorite childhood show, “Rugrats,” was also the lead singer of Devo ha! Weird…
And I agree with you – there is no way I would ever be able to pull off that yellow Devo suit, so kudos to Stephen for rocking it, as well as the blue energy hat. :P

LOL! Just goes to show us how versatile Mothersbaugh is, and ITA, Stephen totally owned that hat! He even made it look rakish -which is also no mean feat, niiiice.
Now, off to find my older brother’s live Devo EP record…
reCapcha: in cheek. Heh.

15,000+ retweets so far! I guess one needs to find something to laugh about so as not to sob uncontrollably. GAH!
The W0rd was spot-on and heartbreakingly so. Managed well and with justice, Afghanistan could become prosperous, but just listen to the gleeful hand-rubbing of the mining companies…Again, laughter to drive away the tears.
On a brighter note, DEVO! Stephen in a blue flower pot energy hat! WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! <3
