Weekend Brunch – Sunday Funday edition

Weekend BrunchWelcome to our (mostly) weekly discussion group to talk about Stephen, our lives, our friendships with each other, and pretty much anything you’d like to talk about with other readers of No Fact Zone, what we here affectionately call “the Zoners”.

Good morning, Zoners! I’ve started my day bright and early with a brunch of leftover pizza and chocolate stick thingys from Pizza Hut, and a big glass of Coke – the breakfast of champions! I’m gearing up for a day of cleaning and hanging out at the lovely Mosaic Lofts rooftop pool deck (again). Because, let’s face it, if you lived here, you’d be at the pool all day, too.

We’ve got a bunch of things to talk about today, so let’s get started, shall we? First, for those of you who are regulars over at the ColbertNation.com forums, you are aware that the boards are going to be closed for maintenance from June 20th to about July 1st. While I don’t participate a lot in the community over there, I do understand that the boards fulfill a very important role in the fandom. We’ll do our best here to help comfort those of you going through Colboard withdrawal while the gurus over at ColbertNation.com make the changes. Do any of you have suggestions of something we could do here to help support that community while it’s down?

For those of you who have been wanting to get tickets to the ‘Colbert Report’, ColbertNation.com has a new ticketing system that you really should check out. Make sure to sign up for their updates if you’re looking for specific dates to go to the show.

I wanted to give everyone a heads up that I will be speaking at the OpenCamp Dallas this year, so if you’re in the Dallas area you should seriously come to this conference. There’s going to be tons of great speakers and lots of entertainment and activities! The conference is bringing users of WordPress, Joomla and Drupal together to learn about open source programming and content creation. While all the learning stuff is kinda cool, the main reason I’m going is because it’s going to be seriously intensely fun. Also, I’m pretty sure it’s going to be streamed like it was last year, so even if you’re not around the area, you can still check out my presentation.

Okay, so to get the conversation going today, here’s my question for all of you today:

You’ve got tickets to the ‘Colbert Report’. With your e-mail confirmation, the e-mail you have says you have a Golden Ticket, one that allows you to put in one request for the show, for a segment, or an outfit, or a guest. What would your Ultimate Show Experience request be?

Would you wish for a Cheating Death or Formidable Opponent segment? Or a particular guest to be on the show? Maybe you would wish for him to wear a particular tie? As for me, I would request that he would have a musical guest on where he sang with the guest. I would absolutely love to see Stephen sing live, just once.

And remember, this is an open topic thread, so you can talk about anything you’d like with the other Zoners. Have a great day – I’m off to the pool!

  1. MaryLovesColbert says:

Wow, a pool deck! That looks really nice! And I had no idea the Colbert Nation forums were shutting down for maintenance, thanks for the heads-up there.

As for my perfect show experience, I think I’d like to see either a purple tie or that red/white/blue striped tie Stephen wears. I would love to see either a WORD segment or a Cheating Death, I absolutely love Cheating Death. As for the guest, I’d have to go with DB, a musical guest where Stephen sings along with them would be amazing. Frankly, though, just getting to go to the show would be a dream come true. Hopefully next summer! :)

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  2. Eris says:

OUTFIT! They can’t be serious. Ooooh, the possibilities. Stephen Colbert as a dress-up doll.

I assume it’s just a particular tie, right?

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • DB says:

It’s a hypothetical, and yes, I’m thinking along the lines of the suit/tie combination. :)

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  3. Eris says:

Oh ah, this is just a theoretical. At first I thought it was something they were actually doing with the new ticketing system.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  4. friedthing says:

That’s an easy one: Steve Carell. And yes, they should sing something. Steve shall take up two segments, one interview and one duet, and the other segment shall be Cheating Death. Stephen shall go tie-less.

    I like this game!! :)

    Difference makers: Thumb up +12

    • Mr. Arkadin says:

The two of them in a duet would be great!
Don’t ask me why, but I have a mental picture of the two Steves (after a mutually aggrieved, “bitter” interview) singing “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers Anymore.” With lots of anger, crying & then reconciliation. :D

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +4

      • Karenatasha says:

Mr. Arkadin — LOL! LOL! I’m laughing just thinking about the
duet. I hope Stephen’s reading this.

I would love to see a “Word” segment live — and Stephen dueting with either Mick Jagger or interviewing Keith Richard. Or Bob Dylan!

And by the way, as an Orson Welles fan, I like your handle, too.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

        • Mr. Arkadin says:

Thank you so much! I’m glad you enjoyed my idea for a duet. :)
I think Richards would be the best guest. Jagger would be to knowing, Dylan… well would be Dylan, & Richards would be just right! ;)
Your an Orson Welles fan too? Awesome! There aren’t enough of us Colbert & Welles fans around. :D

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

        • Karenatasha says:

Well, I’m always for Keith. He’s always a character. Maybe they could duet on “You Got the Silver.”

As for Carrell, he seems to be very elusive and surprisingly not an easy guest to get. I think Stephen may have once called him a “really difficult guy to know.”

Oh, I know a few dual Welles/Colbert fans! Two of the smartest men on earth.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +1

        • Mr. Arkadin says:

Wow! I had know idea about Carell. That’s very interesting.
That’s so cool that you have other friends into both Colbert & Welles. Have you ever listened to any of Welles’ radio shows on Wellesnet.com? Pretty amazing stuff!
I think I’d most like to hear Keith & Stephen duet on “Happy.” :)
BTW: My favorite Keith moment was in an interview w/ MTV’s Kurt Loder back in the late 80′s. When talking about growing old he said, “When I was twenty I’d say to myself “I’m living all out. I’m never going to live to see thirty!” Then I hit thirty and I said to myself “Well, I’m damn sure never going to make it to forty!’ Then I hit forty and I said to myself “Oh F#@k it. Let’s try for one hundred!” :D

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

        • Karenatasha says:

Yes, I have heard several of Welles’s radio broadcasts. In fact, in the past I used it when I taught “War of the Worlds” in film classes, along with the novel. I love them.

Thanks for the Keith quote! That man SHOULD be glad he’s still alive, between the heroin and the blood transfusions. He’s really a miracle man. I was torn between “Happy” and “You Got the Silver,” and only chose the latter because I think the faux-country style suits Stephen well; “Cheap Rewards” is still my favorite of his performances. But frankly, whatever those two men want to give me, I’ll take!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +1

        • Mr. Arkadin says:

That so great that you teach film classes in general & Welles’ radio programs in particular! :D
Not enough people remember Welles’ radio work and the influence of it on his film work.
Yeah, I see what you mean about “You Got the Silver.” Especially in relationship to “Cheap Reward.” (And that’s one of my favorite Stephen performances too!)
Glad you liked the Keith quote!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • MaryLovesColbert says:

Oh, man. I didn’t even think of Steve Carell! I put him on my list too. :D

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  5. Arrow says:

Aw, I’m definitely going to go through withdrawal with the boards going on hiatus. :( And I’m still sad about the fangirl section disappearing, I love that place!

As for the Golden Ticket question…I would kill to see a WORD segment live, so I’m going to say a WORD segment where Stephen starts in a tuxedo and then strips down to boxers in an American flag design. :P I think that would keep me happy for the rest of forever.

Alternatively, I would love to see anything where Jon and Stephen are on stage together!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +1

  6. Bri says:

Um, could he wear the Roman outfit the entire show? Even if it has nothing to do with the show that he’s about to do? Because I’d like that. Or his matador outfit.

And Steve Carell would have to be on. I don’t care what he’s on for. Either for an interview or as part of Stephen’s production team in some capacity. I just want Steve to be on Stephen’s show. It needs to happen.

I’d love to see a Cheating Death in person since I’ve already seen a Word in person. So much potential for a character break, which are so very adorable.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +2

  7. Spoon At A Spork Fight says:

Much responsibility comes with the Golden Ticket. Hmm…

Musical guest that Stephen sings with is quite tempting, DB. I loved seeing him sing with Alicia Keys and Crosby, Stills & Nash (not to mention Malcolm Gladwell and Andrew Young).

Would the Golden Ticket allow him to do the entire show in a Southern accent? ;-)

My favorite segment (along with the Word) is Formidable Opponent so I’d love to see one of those taped in person.

But if I had a *golden* ticket I couldn’t resist the temptation to get an amazing guest. Former Pres. W. Bush is a thought, but I imagine W. and Stephen’s character would actually get along pretty well and that W. would not have much to say *cough*. I’d be interested to see how an interview between Stephen and Dick Cheney would go.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +1

    • lockhart43 says:

I think the Golden Ticket absolutely allows for him to do the entire show in a Southern accent. :)
With that in mind, I’d vote that he does the whole show in either a Southern accent or that wonderful English accent he’s perfected. I think that would put a smile on my face for eternity.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

      • Katydidnt says:

Oh, I’d like to third the whole accent thing. Southern, English, Irish (as in Bloomsday), Australian (as in his most recent hawking of Formula 401)…I don’t care. I love them all!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  8. magdalena says:

I want a golden ticket! For me it would be a toss, a word, formidable opponent and Amy Sedaris (it’s ok to be greedy right?). And if Stephen felt like singing and dancing, i wouldn’t stop him…

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +2

    • friedthing says:

A toss!! Totally forgot about that! Definitely need a toss!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +1

  9. juice says:

My dream show includes: Stephen in a tuxedo and/or “Steve Colbert”; Steve Carell, an Even Stephven version of Formidable Opponent; Cheating Death accompanied by a major character break. I’m torn between choosing favorite musical guests – Spoon at a Spork Fight listed several of my favorite musicians, to which I’d add John Legend, Yo Yo Ma, Meryl Streep (Meryl & Stephen duet!!), Elvis Costello … oh, it’s my dream episode, have ‘em all on together!
Obviously, this would be at least an hour-long special episode, so as long as I’m at it, let’s throw Eleanor Holmes Norton into the mix.

    Difference makers: Thumb up +8

    • lockhart43 says:

“Steve Colbert”! Yes! Would love to see him again. And that adorable rugby shirt. :)

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +1

  10. luvtcr says:

Obviously I am in total agreement with the Steve Carell requests. If they could sing together that would be great–I would love for them both to come out for the pre-show Q&A.

Honestly, just give me some singing, interaction/comments directed at the audience, and massive character breaks. I know he’s a professional – but the character breaks are just freaking adorable!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +1

  11. Katydidnt says:

Reading everyone’s lists is so interesting! I completely agree with juice about a cameo by “Steve Colbert”; I would love to see that. I’d also love to see Hugh Laurie as a guest; given how quick-witted both men are, that interview couldn’t be anything but hilarious. I also agree with the singing, although…well…he actually did sing to me at the taping I went to, so I feel very very lucky to have seen that.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +2

    • Mr. Arkadin says:

“I also agree with the singing, although…well…he actually did sing to me at the taping I went to, so I feel very very lucky to have seen that.”
Really!? *Grabby hand* Details please! :)

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

      • Katydidnt says:

        Details? Sure!

I’d prepared a Q&A question in advance, because I knew I wouldn’t be able to think of anything on the spot. So he called on me, and I asked, “What song or songs would we be surprised to hear you sing?” I thought he would just list a song or two, like, “Oh, when it comes on the radio, I always sing along with ‘Single Ladies’” or something quirky like that.

Instead, he sang “Happy Birthday” to me in Latin! (It wasn’t my birthday, but it sure felt like it was.) He even asked for my name at the part where you say someone’s name. So yes, Stephen Colbert sang to me, and I hadn’t expected it at all!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +4

        • lockhart43 says:

I remember you mentioning this in an earlier post once, but I’m still massively jealous of you! I can’t even imagine that happening to me without smiling uncontrollably.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

        • Katydidnt says:

…I mentioned it before? Did I? *is embarrassed* Sorry!

I was definitely smiling! It was very lucky that he took my question that way.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

        • lockhart43 says:

I don’t remember what post it was, it might have been in an earlier Weekend Brunch, but I’m not sure. And no worries, I wasn’t complaining! I like hearing about it. :)

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

        • lockhart43 says:

Wanna hear something funny? I’m an idiot, and you *didn’t* mention the taping already…I was totally thinking of something else. *headdesk* *double headdesk*
At any rate, still jealous of you. :D

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

        • Katydidnt says:

I’m replying here because it won’t let me reply to your other comments below. :)

“I was totally thinking of something else. *headdesk* *double headdesk*”

Don’t worry about it! I was just hoping I hadn’t bored the socks off you by mentioning the same story twice. :) As I said before, I was very lucky. Have you been to a taping too?

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

        • Mr. Arkadin says:

          That’s so cool! Thanks a lot! :)

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

        • Katydidnt says:

          You’re welcome!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

        • Mr. Arkadin says:

@Katydidnt. I don’t remember you mentioning this before? Which show were you at?

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

        • Katydidnt says:

@lockhart43: Oh, okay. :) Because I have an uncle who does this, I worry about being that person who tells the same story 14,000 times even though everybody remembers exactly how it goes from the first 5 times of hearing it. ;)

@Mr Arkadin: It was the June 3 episode from a week ago.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

        • lockhart43 says:

Nope, I haven’t had a chance to go to a taping yet, unfortunately. :(
BUT I’m planning on going to one at the end of July, so I’m getting excited for that!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

        • Katydidnt says:

No, I understand. I’ve only just been.

That’s wonderful! I hope you will post here and tell us all about it! I’ll be excited to hear. :D

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

        • Katydidnt says:

It was pretty funny–SC asked where the cameramen wanted him for the intro to the second song. They told him anywhere, so he got down on the floor, and for a minute it looked like he was going to lie down in his “wrapped in the American flag” pose, and the audience got VERY excited. But he wound up sitting cross-legged instead. :)

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

        • Mr. Arkadin says:

Oh, you were at the Vampire Weekend show!
If Lockhart43 was jealous of you before, just wait till she hears about this! ;) LOL!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

        • lockhart43 says:

Hahaha! Yeah, I looked up the episode when I read that it was from June 3rd. And it’s true – I am even more jealous than I was before! Especially for the fact that VW played two songs and for Stephen’s adorable “Welcome to Hour Two of the Colbert Report” line while he sat cross-legged on the floor. :)

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  12. lockhart43 says:

That pool deck looks amazing! And good luck with the presentation DB!

I started off my day by waking up at 11:30 and going for a bike ride, and I’ve spent the rest of the day relaxing, which has been nice. As for my Ultimate Show Experience, Stephen would wear my favorite tie, the blue and green striped one that he wore to Two River, with a crisp white shirt and a slick black suit. There would be a Toss to start off the show, and then a Tip of the Hat/Wag of the Finger for the first segment. Then after the break, either a Cheating Death segment or a ThreatDown. It would be absolutely perfect if there was a character break somewhere in there. Or two. Or three. ;)
And for the guest, I would LOVE to see either Steve Carell or David Sedaris on the show. Either one would be fantastic. Paul Dinello would be in one of the segments as well. :)

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +1

  13. Ann G says:

Wow, so many good suggestions for a “customized” show! I really like juice’s suggestion of an Even Stephven version of Formidable Opponent — clever idea! And Katydidnt also had a great suggestion: Hugh Laurie. It wouldn’t even have to be for an interview, I’d love to see Stephen and Hugh do some comedy together. Or even sing together! That would be pretty cool.

Another dream guest: Conan. Feuding or not, I love Stephen and Conan together.

But the one thing I really want to see the most would be a return visit by Tad the Building Manager. That would make me very, very happy.

    Difference makers: Thumb up +5

    • Tish says:

I was waiting for someone to mention Tad, or Paul Dinello! Definitely seconded on that request.
Also, Elvis Costello promised to return and sing something with a 2-part harmony when he got his voice back. I hope he’s been sucking on Fishermen’s Friends (or Talk Show Host’s Friends) and feels better now. ;)

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  14. SusieBlack says:

The ultimate for me would be for Stephen to sing, with Hugh Laurie, he’s quite the musician I’ve heard.

Does anyone know how to download video of Stephen and Elvis Costello playing ‘Cheap Reward’? Keepvid doesn’t seem to work.

Now that would be some golden ticket! I’d love to see a WORD live, my favorites are ones he does on anything LGBT rights related. He just knocks those out of the park (not that they aren’t all great). I’d also really really love to see a toss in person. For the interview, I’d really like to see Rufus Wainwright as a musical guest or maybe a living classic movie star like Lauren Bacall or Debbie Reynolds.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +1

    • Michele says:

Ooooh! Rufus Wainwright would be an awesome musical guest!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +1

    • lockhart43 says:

Lauren Bacall! I would love to see her on the show, she’s fantastic.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +1

      • marleygirl84 says:

Yes, she’s so wonderful! She had tiny cameo on a Daily Show episode from way back. I think they were at one of the conventions and briefly showed her walking or something like that. I’d always imagined her to be a fan of these shows because she has a great sense of humor and is a huge liberal. Her relationship with Bogie (my cat’s name) is one of the loveliest and most romantic I’ve ever seen…. (and their age difference is the same as mine and Stephen’s hehehe) ;)

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  16. Michele says:

I live in John Boehner’s district so I would REALLY love to see that jerk on BKAD. Steve Carell would be a great guest to see live and since Cheating Death is my favorite segment let’s toss that in too. Oh, and a toss! I’ve been to two tapings but no toss either time and the tosses are becoming even fewer and farther between.

Oh my! I just saw that Devo are going to be on next week. I wish I could be there for that!

Whoa, I just had a moment of “Wait, what?!?” because I remember you saying you’re in Cincinnati (as am I, and apparently haven’t managed to learn who my representative is after 8 months), so I looked it up quick and it turns out mine is Steve Driehaus. Alrighty then. Civic engagement FAIL.

Ha ha! And I’m a vet tech too. We live in the northern suburbs of the city so we’re in Boner’s, er I mean Boehner’s district, unfortunately. He’s actually got some real competition for this election which makes me hopeful we may finally get rid of him. :-)

So does anyone know what the deal is with the new ticketing system? I signed up for the emails but I haven’t gotten any although the DailyTix twitter feed says there are tickets out. What’s going onnn? :’(

I don’t know what’s up with the new ticketing system but I just looked at the ticket page on the main website. The dates available are today, and several dates in early and late July. If you’re looking for any of those dates just go over to the ticket page now.

      • lockhart43 says:

Thank you SO much Michele! As soon as I read your post, I jumped over to the TCR ticket page and was able to reserve the last two tickets for July 27th, which is the week that I am planning my NYC trip! Plus, I was then able to get tickets to TDS for the next day. Thanks again! :D

Unfortunately, there are no tickets available to see The Colbert Report at this time. Check back soon to secure your tickets or sign-up below to receive e-mails letting you know when new dates open up.

Golden Ticket … Toss, toss, toss, toss, toss … come on boys!! it has been 44 days since the last toss …

I’d ask for a blissful toss to start with, singing with a guest, and Formidable Opponent! love ‘em … oh, and loads of breaks and crack ups … would love to attend a show that takes extra time ’cause he cracks up so much enjoying all the silliness! Would be fun to have some craziness with Jon, Conan, Steve and Stephen …

And the cherry on top would be audience participation … do you remember when he was introducing a guest performer (was it Talking Heads?) and he was sitting on an audience member’s lap???

*vigorously raises hand* … pick me, pick me!!! … LOL

reCAPTCHA: Records hercules … yes, this episode would be a herculean feat but oh so very worth it!!! … LOL …

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  20. GB says:

Oh what I wouldn’t give to see a great toss, where they crack each other up.

My second choice would be a great guest, like Hugh Laurie, but I think he would have to come on as House. Seth Macfarlane has always been a dream guest of mine too and Steve Carell or Conan again.

Another great segment would be a Better Know a District, especially if it was in Mass, where I’m from.
