Episode 6072 (6/7/2010) – Jonathan Alter

Colbert Report Episode guideEPISODE NUMBER: 6072 (June 7, 2010)
GUESTS: James Carville, Jonathan Alter
SEGMENTS: Stephen gets mad about BP oil spill
VIDEOS: Monday, June 7, 2010

Congrats to Stephen, and his gratuitous use of the word “bing”, raising $100,000 last night. I loved the mischevious grin Stephen got when he said that he learned about bing by googling it. I used to love bing, until somehow No Fact Zone dropped off the front page of the search term “Stephen Colbert”. And we’re not even mentioned in the “Stephen Colbert Fan Club” section of the front page. Not that we’re a club. Are there even fan clubs around any more, I mean for anyone other than maybe Justin Bieber? At any rate, yay for bing donating money on behalf of Stephen, but also, they can kind of suck it. Unless we end up on the front page of the search for Stephen Colbert again. Then they rock really hard.

I’m not sure why, but Stephen’s line about fancy pants made me laugh so hard I had to pause the video for a second. I think it was because he seemed to be channeling Stuart Smalley, just for a second. Also, um, I know I was supposed to be all, you know, laughing at the amount of anger no sleeves produced. But I was kinda mesmerized by his biceps. His milky white, needs to go out on the boat a bit this summer biceps.

I always find James Carville entertaining, even if he does scare me a little. And I enjoyed the interview with Jonathan Alter. Sometimes with the barraged of criticism that Obama gets on a daily basis (even about his pants!), it’s always good to remember that he has actually done a lot of good in his presidency. And Icy fury? Brr!!

What did you like about tonight’s show? And don’t forget to donate to the Colbert Nation Gulf of America fund!

Two tickets to the gun show, please! *grabby hands*

  • By the way, bing is a great site for doing internet searches. I know that because I googled it.
  • I’ll be getting so much money out of them, I’ll be rob-bing them blind.
  • Note to self: don’t buy condoms at a BP station.
  • BP hasn’t fixed this thing at all! I appear to be angry!
  • You call that furious? You know you’re not showing enough emotion when you make Larry King look lively.
  • This is no time for fancy pants! Look at those fancy pants! When Germans bombed London, he didn’t wear a suit, he was out there in sweatpants and a and a Packers jersey.
  • One roll of the sleeve means you’re slightly irked, two, you’re upset, three, flirty, girls like to see a little forearm. But if you’re mad as hell, you’ve got to show it. Now you appear ready to kick a little arse.
  • Feast on him, my lovelies!
  • But don’t go over the top, you still need to seem presidential.
  • If the oil was Lehman brothers, it would have just go away by now.
  • We know that if this was Reagan, he would have stripped to his skivvies, put a knife in his teeth, gone down there and punched that oil well shut.
  • What are you talking about, FDR had it easier?! He had nazis! Obama doesn’t have nazis.
  • Wow, you liberals sure have salty talk.
  • Does the President need ridaliln?

  • Icy fury, he’s like a McDLT.

Stuart Smalley! That’s it! I also laughed pretty hard at the way he said “fancy pants” and couldn’t quite place who it reminded me of.

A friend of mine recently noted that nearly everything that comes out of Carville’s mouth, no matter what it is, just sounds ridiculously hilarious. He can’t help it! So I kept thinking of that and giggling during that interview. Yes, I’m embarrassed. I always enjoy the interviews with Alter. He has being a good guest down to a science.

Hooray for the Gulf of America Fund!!!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • leorabk says:

now u understand why stephen taught himself to speak without a southern accent- bc its very hard to be taken seriously however i do think that carville is the exception because he has such brilliant things to say (i’m sure stephen would have also been the exception had he kept his accent)
it was such a fangirl episode- the biceps, the beating up segment, sighhh
and i have literally been repeating the fancy pants line like 20 times already (and counting!)

while im upset that bing doesnt have NFZ n the search page for colbert i do think that their PR team is one of the most clever ad teams ever!!!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +1

      • Michele says:

I was born and raised in WV so I am very well acquainted with accents, although I don’t have one, and having people make assumptions about your intelligence. I do think Carville is brilliant, although he irritates me at times.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  2. Eris says:

Holy moley, that asskicking of “Tony Hayward” was beyond epic! I hope that clip goes viral, that is EXACTLY how I’ve been feeling towards BP!

*copying above screencap for later viewing…*

  3. Laaaura says:

The way he said “fancy pants” was SO funny! Especially the look on his face after the second time he said it.

I love that picture of Stephen flexing! woo!! That whole segment was way too hysterical.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +2

  4. Katt says:

Is it wrong of me that as soon as Stephen ripped off his sleeves the first thing that came to my mind was “If he put a vest on he’d look just like ‘The Situation’ at the MTV Awards”? Maybe I was hoping for a lil 6-pack action.

Normally James Carville scares me half to death, he looks like a demon snake but I quit enjoyed his appearance tonight. The fancy pants thing all so cracked me up, but what exactly do they expect Obama to wear?

    Overall a great episode!!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +1

  5. Roseha says:

Love the bing fund-raising! And I lowered my head to laugh at the “I googled it” line.

Stephen can work an idea to death and make it delightful! How does he do that?

I have to say that hours later I was singing “Bingo” (there was a boy who had a dog…) and it actually took a while for me to realize why!

And yes yay to Stephen for the fund-raising. I gave too.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +1

  6. lockhart43 says:

The “fancy pants” line had me laughing so hard! Stephen beating up “Tony Hayward” was so incredibly satisfying. And when Stephen tore off his sleeves I couldn’t help but stare at his adorkable farmer’s tan. ;-)

James Carville makes me laugh every time he talks, so I enjoyed the interview. It’s not really the accent that gets me, it’s the fact that he’s so rapid-fire all the time. I want to be a fly on the wall in the dining room of the Carville and Matalin’s household, just to hear those two talk about anything over dinner, lol.

Did anyone else notice that Stephen took his jacket off again just before the end credits? From the cheers of the audience, I imagine he started running around the studio. This is why I wish sometimes they wouldn’t run the end credits right away, because that would have been hilarious to watch.

And yay for Stephen, Bing, and the Gulf of America Fund! I donated this morning.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +3

    • Michele says:

That’s exactly what it is about Carville that makes him funny. It’s not so much the accent, but his whole demeanor. I would love to be a fly on the wall in that house too!

  7. luvtcr says:

I think my favorite part was watching the sea turtle back over Hayward again and again! Very clever and cute. And my oh my–Stephen’s arms need a tan but they are nice! *fangirl swoon*

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +2

  8. smithalot says:

the show was vary bing! ,and on a fangirl note Stephen has nice arm! (:

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up -1

  9. Aaron B. says:

Note to self: undo cuff buttons before tearing off shirtsleeves…

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +3

  10. leorabk says:

hey a huffpo commenter pointed this out- did anyone realize that when stephen had his shirt-sleeves off during the pretaped clip he didnt have his wristSTRONG on :( whats with that!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  11. Gratefull says:

Now that I watch for the FanGirl Suit Report, I notice curious details. He ripped his sleeves off for the BP pounding but had his cuffs back for the Carville clip and then his cuffs were missing again for the Alter interview … continuity, folks, LOL … Let’s hear it for post taping editing …

Also, he got his Rolex watch on again … I think I like the new one better. Or is the Rolex a prop??

LOL reCAPTCHA: yesterday Kaboom … yes it was, that BP pounding was a “yesterday Kaboom” … LOL

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • Ms Interpreted says:

Yeah, I saw a taping report somewhere on the internets that said they taped the Carville segment first. It was because they only had ten minutes or so with that satellite feed to do the interview.

It’s why there were a few little continuity gaps litle that.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +1

  12. jbirdNZ says:

Haven’t watched the epi yet but that screencap, oh my…

    reCaptcha Newspaper mousiest

  13. clone2727 says:

I was at the episode taping and wrote a blog post about the experience: http://clone2729.blogspot.com/2010/06/my-day-at-colbert-report.html

I was laughing almost constantly during the taping ;)

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +2

  14. Mr. Arkadin says:

Didn’t care much for the interviews.
But the BP stuff was massive! Beating hell out of Hayward is long over do! If only to get him to stop talking! This guy says so many stupid things without learning from them that I expect to see him as a regular on Fox News any day now!
I think Stephen’s arms (or his “alabaster Howitzers” *trademarked* Mr. Arkadin 06/08/10) looked much better then the last time we saw them during Guitarmageddon. :P

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +1

  15. MaryLovesColbert says:

Oh my goodness! You picked a great screencap, DB! It was all I could do to remain composed this morning at the office. :P I enjoyed his kicking “Tony Hayward’s” ass for several reasons. ;D

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +1

  16. jbirdNZ says:

One thing I love about the Colbert report -aside from my fangirly squeeing over the joy that is SC- is that it has seriously broadened my horizons since I began watching a year ago. His shows are always just so interesting, clever and well-done. He has amazing writers and together they just deliver the goods, by the ton.

The BP segment was my favourite (although I liked how he got Carville and Alter to up the bing mentions) and the whole kick-ass segment was terrific, those nice bare arms and all. I recognised the studio rooftop from where they shot the Charlene video and the turtle just cracked me up.

    Great show!

My reCaptcha: roasted Carter. Surely that’s no way to treat a fomer President.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +1

  17. Ann G says:

The BP segment was so hilarious, I kept laughing for a good ten minutes after it was over. The dummy “Tony Hayward” being thrown off the studio roof really did me in because it made me think of the many times Monty Python used the same trick to get a laugh.

The biceps are indeed mesmerizing, but I agree with DB that they need a little sun. Show ‘em off in the great outdoors once in a while.

Hey! New opening word – SCILF. Does that mean what I think it’s supposed to mean?! Tee Hee!
