Oh my gosh, that funny smile Stephen gives Tom after Tom says they don’t need to write lines for Stephen out of character is the most adorable thing ever!!

I read somewhere that Stephen had a stinking cold that day and he does look a little down energy. Still, it almost looks like Stephen was blushing when Tom P. said, “we don’t need to write lines for Stephen … ” and then what Tom P. shares is really useful and fascinating about improv and the moment and exploring the emotional state. So great, cool stuff! *smile*

Aww, where did you hear that he had a cold?

On the CN boards, I think. Me and my memory are not on speaking terms these days – been burning the candle at both ends for a while.

Hey! Some video of it – at last! This proves that someone was video-taping it! :D

I know that Stephen says deconstructing comedy is a bore for others, but I love listening to these guys talk about what they do and how they do it – it’s always a joy to listen to someone who is not only loves his work but is very good at it.
I so want to be a comedy writer right now – and I would so suck at it!

I agree, I love to hear Stephen & the writers talk about what goes into the show. As a fan, it’s a treat to see the structure and the scaffolding behind the jokes, because I appreciate the show for both the humor and the craft of it.

I really enjoy listening and trying to deconstruct stories and all. I really liked that he talked about figuring out the emotional angle that Dr. C DFA would talk in the inprov part of the interview – most cool.
Takes practice, though, loads of it. And it helps to have a community of people to practice with and who can give you good feedback.

Every time I hear Stephen say that it would be boring for him to deconstruct comedy in an interview, I want to say, “No! Please talk about status shifts! I would love to hear you deconstruct comedy!” I absolutely love to hear him talk about comedy, especially since whenever he talks about it, you can tell how much he truly loves what he does. Also, to hear the structure behind the jokes on the show just makes me appreciate the show even more. :]

That smile that Stephen gives after Tom Purcell’s “he doesn’t need us to write lines for him when he’s not the character” comment is just adorable.
This is fantastic, thank you!

AHH! That was good :) I liked the whole thing about not needing to write lines for Stephen. LOL. It took Stephen a while, but his smile was adorable.
Sometimes Stephen looks like he’s zoning out at panels and stuff… maybe i’m just crazy?

I was always under the impression that he was concentrating on listening, because he might have problems hearing someone with his wonky ear if he’s not looking directly at them. But I could be wrong.

I do think it’s mostly because he’s concentrating on listening (which I love). You can always tell when he’s really trying to pay attention to what someone is saying. But I have seen in a couple of interviews (like Letterman for example) where he leans in a little more to hear more clearly.

No, I think he’s concentrating, because you can see him react to what other people are saying. I don’t even think it’s necessarily a hearing thing – I look the same way, too, when I’m thinking about what someone’s saying.

stephen seemed tired and kind of out of spirits during the panel. even me, one of the biggest Colbert fans you’ll find, found myself enjoying the SCTV panel that followed directly thereafter (with Martin Short, Eugene Levy et. al)MORE than the TCR panel.
the other TCR writers were very talkative and energetic, as you see with Tom Purcell here, but like i said, stephen did not seem like the super-peppy guy you are accustomed to seeing on the TV. oh well, it does not diminish my admiration for him. i really hope he enjoyed being in Chicago for the SC weekend though, he and steve carell were really the super stars there.
