I have said it before and I’ll say it again: if the ‘Colbert Report’ doesn’t win an Emmy this year for Stephen’s work with the troops in Iraq, I’m personally going to go and kick the shins of every Emmy voting member I can find.
And it warms the cockles of my heart to see that the LA Times Envelope blog feels that the Iraq shows are as strong an Emmy contender as we do (links omitted):
Looks like Stephen Colbert will finally get the last laugh over his former Comedy Central mentor at the Emmys. Although “The Colbert Report” managed to beat “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart” for best writing in a variety series in 2008, no program’s been able to beat “The Daily Show” for best variety series over the last seven years. (“The Colbert Report” was nominated against it four times.) In August, “The Colbert Report” could win both trophies based on what’s inside the Emmy campaign box recently shipped to the 14,000 members of the TV academy.
Campaign episodes tend to be the same ones submitted later to judges who determine winners. “The Colbert Report” just launched an Emmy weapon of mass destruction: its visit to U.S. troops in Iraq, where Colbert went through boot camp. It’s not only hilarious, but it also features guest appearances by President Obama and Sen. John McCain. Best scene: Commander-in-chief Obama orders Gen. Raymond Odierno to give Colbert a buzz haircut.

“An Emmy weapon of mass destruction”! I’m still so pleased and proud of them for doing the Iraq shows, an Emmy nod won’t change that a bit.
But you know I’m with you on the shin kicking.

While I always love seeing Jon win, it will be an absolute travesty if Stephen doesn’t take it this year. Forget Who’s Not Honoring Me Now, more like Who’s Gone Bats*** Crazy.
And count me in on the shin kicking. I’ve always wanted to visit LA anyway. :)

Amen to that, colbaby!

WOW!! That will be an awesome Emmy ceremony if The Colbert Report beats The Daily Show! :D

It would be awesome for them both to win as both shows most definitely deserve it. Loved Stephen’s “Munch my hairy Irish butt, Stewbug, Munch it” on the Sept 24, 2008 “Emmy Fight” toss.

Is a tie possible? Has that ever happened? I would really really love for both shows to win, that would be so awesome.

Wow, I didn’t realize TDS won variety for 7 STRAIGHT YEARS! They, sir, are a formidable opponent.

I’ve got my fingers crossed that TCR finally beats TDS this year. It feels weird to be rooting against Jon, but after the shows in Iraq, Team Colbert couldn’t deserve it any more.
And I’m joining the “I’m kicking some shins” bandwagon if the presenters call anything but “The Colbert Report” on Emmy night. :)

Am I right in thinking that TCR couldn’t submit a show from Iraq to last year’s emmys because it didn’t reach the deadline? Anyone know which episodes from what time period are eligible for the Emmys?
I went to check which episode TDS submitted, and if the date (Oct.12, ’09) on the disk is correct, they chose the one they did the “CNN Leaves it There” piece. That was very good. Huckabee wasn’t the guest on that one, though. Could they actually submit an episode and edit in an interview from a different episode? Or maybe they got the date wrong and submitted the show from Dec.8,’09… which is also very good. I dunno, I’m confused.

Ok, just hung out with the Emmy rules for a bit:
* Episodes that were first broadcast between June 1, 2009 and May 31, 2010 are eligible for the 2010 Emmys.
*I believe programs must be submitted as aired, so no editing in different interviews.
*There are typically 5 or 6 nominations (depending on the category), but extra nominations are allowed if there’s a tie.
*Emmy wins go to the single entrant with the highest vote totals – no word that I can see about ties.

So maybe they just got the guest name wrong. Or the date.
Anyway, thank you very much for the info. :)

Welcome to No Fact Zone, MsWooster! And yes, it’s about darn time that Stephen get just a little more out of Jon’s shadow. While Jon is great, we simply adore Stephen here and hope to all heck that he gets an Emmy this year for the show.

I’m so hoping he wins. He should have won last year, especially for writing. I think Stephen was simply much stronger. The Emmys, however, are notorious for continuing to give it to the same shows year after year, way past their sell-by date–and Jon’s not in that category by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, I think Jon’s been better this year than last, with some of those great 15-minute long segments. But I still think Stephen’s more unique. Fingers crossed! (I’m also hoping they’ll present together again. They year they and Steve Carrell did that segment was a riot.)

I really, really hope Stephen wins too. But the Emmys do have this awful tendency to award the same show ten times, and ignore others at least as good (in both drama and comedy). I really hope this will be the year they decide to break that trend (all due respect to Jon). I will feel more hopeful if they bring back Stephen’s performance category as well!
