Welcome to our (mostly) weekly discussion group to talk about Stephen, our lives, our friendships with each other, and pretty much anything you’d like to talk about with other readers of No Fact Zone, what we here affectionately call “the Zoners”.
Good morning, Zoners! I had made plans to sleep in, but my sweet husband has has an upper respiratory thing going on for a couple of weeks, and he starts coughing like a smoker with TB about 7a every morning. So I got up, made a big ol’ bowl of Life cereal, and decided to take some time to chat with the Zoners.
So it’s been a while since we did one of these – what have I been doing? We’re getting nice and settled into the loft. My view is still breathtaking, and my loft is still tragically hip. We’ve gotten a group of people here at the Mosaic that gather every Sunday afternoon, and have adult beverages and grill out by the pool. It’s nice to have a group of people, our Mo’ family as we’ve come to calling each other. It’s been a while since I felt that kind of community, and it feels really good.
In other activities, I’ve been reading like a fiend. I got a Barnes and Noble nook e-reader a few weeks ago, and I’ve been reading 1-2 books a week since I got it. I tricked out the screen by making the wallpaper the red/blue facing Stephens that line the inside of “I Am America (And So Can You!)”. I read “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” and loved it, and I’m currently reading “The Paradox Of Choice” and “To Kill A Mockingbird”. I haven’t read “To Kill A Mockingbird” since 8th grade or so, and the stories about the event this week made me have a hankerin’ for reading it again. I’ve also reread the “Hitchhiker’s Trilogy”, all five in the original trilogy, plus the new “And Another Thing”. For those Douglas Adams fans who wonder if another writer can do justice to Zaphod, Arthur, Trillian and the rest, I say see if you can get it on sale at the Half-Price Books, or check it out at library. It felt more like fanfic than canon, if that makes sense.
Here’s a bit of warning about the nook, though. I got the sample of “I Am America (And So Can You)!” for e-book when I first got the nook. I figured, I’ve got two copies of the book in hardback (one autographed), and the audiobook, so I don’t really need the e-book. But it would be cool to at least have a little chunk. Then last night, I realized it would be nice to have a copy of the book on my nook to read just when I’m in the mood, without having to drag out one of the hardback books. But when I went to go buy it, it wasn’t available any more! Horrors! I’ve e-mailed Barnes & Noble asking if maybe there’s just a burp in the database, and hopefully they’ll dust it out of the vaults and let me buy one before they shelve it permanently.
So to get the discussion going, here’s my question for the day:
Do you have a “Stephen Colbert” list on your iPod/iPhone? And if so, what songs are on it?
I most definitely do – I listen to the playlist more often than one would think, actually. The music is a good mix of mellow and fun. Here’s the songs that I have on my list (with links to MP3 downloads or videos of why they’re on the list, when available):
- Love Remains The Same – Gavin Rossdale (This song was on the radio constantly during my 2008 trip to NYC and always takes me back to the poconos and the sidewalks of NYC.)
- This Too Shall Pass – OK Go with Stephen Colbert and Colbert Nation
- Cheap Reward – Stephen Colbert and Elvis Costello
- Cold, Cold Christmas – Stephen Colbert (from the ‘Colbert Christmas’ album)
- (What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace Love and Understanding? – Elvis Costello, Feist, John Legend, Stephen Colbert, Toby Keith & Willie Nelson (from the ‘Colbert Christmas’ album)
- Dance With Me – Orleans
- When Doves Cry – Prince
- Charlene (I’m Right Behind You) – Stephen and the Colberts
- Singin’ In Korean – Stephen Colbert
- The Girl Is Mine – Stephen Colbert and John Legend
- Sexyback – Justin Timberlake
- Dancing Muchachos – Stephen Colbert (from Exit 57)
- Another Christmas Song – Stephen Colbert (from the ‘Colbert Christmas’ album)
- Carry On Wayward Son – Kansas
- I Want You To Want Me – Cheap Trick (Live At Budokan version)
- Brianstorm – Arctic Monkeys
- L-O-V-E – Nat “King” Cole
- Can’t Get Enough Of Your Love – Barry White
And, as always, this is a forum to talk about anything you’d like off-topic, so feel free to get to know each other a little better in the comments!
I only have 6 on my list: Empire State of Mind, Cheap Reward, This too shall pass, Brianstorm, The Girl is Mine, and The Lie.
And I just realized that it’s been FOUR YEARS since the WHCD speech. Wow… has it really been that long?

My iPod has a Holiday playlist, which has all of the Colbert Christmas numbers in it. I have a playlist called “Workday Drone” which has about 700 songs in it — every conceiveable song I might want to listen to during the workday. That playlist includes “Cheap Reward” and “The Girl is Mine,” and I’ll be adding “This Too Shall Pass,” thanks to Hari! At work, I put it on Random and let it go, and it’s always a nice little break when Stephen appears in the rotation. Although I will typically stop working, turn it up, and sing along. It’s lucky I don’t share an office anymore.
I don’t have a dedicated Stephen Colbert playlist, though. I like to sprinkle him throughout other playlists and then be pleasantly surprised when he comes up.
I hope you’re enjoying the re-read of To Kill a Mockingbird. It’s one of my favorite books and I read it again every couple of years or so. For anyone who maybe read it in middle or high school and hasn’t picked it up again: it deserves to be read again as a grown-up. You will get so much more out of it.

I’ve got (What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace Love and Understanding?, Can I Interest You In Hanukkah?, Cheap Reward, Remixing is OK!, Empire State of Mind, Dancing Muchachos, Nutmeg, Singing in Korean, The Little Dealer Boy, Charlene (I’m Right Behind You) 12″ remix, Rocky Road to Dublin, There Are Much Worse Things To Believe In, This Too Shall Pass, plus the audio books for Wigfield and I Am America (And So Can You!) for boring train journeys. :D
I’m currently re-reading Contact by Carl Sagan, and I’ll have to dig out To Kill A Mockingbird again afterwards.
Lastly, the cat is trying to eat my fingers…

I don’t have a SC mix, but I do have Cheap Reward, Empire State of Mind, and now This Too Shall Pass – those are good for the walk from car to office. At work, I generally listen to other stuff. Pandora’s good because I don’t know all the songs that come up, so I’m less tempted to stop working and sing along ;)
And oh man, I wish I could find time to read so much. During the school year, there’s just no room for non-academic anything (at least not pre-tenure!). Once classes are over, I have more time for fun reading. But I’m not quite there yet!
*despairingly goes back to grading*

Yep, I have a Stephen Colbert playlist on my iPod and it has basically every song I’m aware of Stephen singing on The Colbert Report or somewhere else. Like, I have the mp3s of him as Noblet singing Kansas songs. “Empire State of Mind” is my absolute favorite though and the most played song on that playlist. I also have Stephen’s reading of “The Lie.” That short story is too funny and I love Stephen’s reading of it.
Another song I listen to a lot, in which Stephen didn’t sing with his guest, is Feist’s performance of “I Feel It All.” Such a fantastic performance!
I also have a Colbert and Stewart video playlist on my iPod Touch, with just a bunch of my favorite Klassic Kolbert segments from TDS and my favorites from TCR. Just last night I was looking on my external hard drive, which I never really use, and I found a video of the full episode of when they sang “Let My People Go,” during the writer’s strike. So now I have that whole episode on my iPod. That’s another favorite Colbert song of mine.
The wallpaper looks so cool on your Nook! And I love how there’s a pint of AmeriCone Dream in the corner of that picture. ^_^ Were you eating it or is that just an empty carton? I ask because I have an empty one on my desk that holds all my pens lol. And I never see that flavor in the store anymore.
I love that “Nights in Rodanthe” video clip. “I love loving!!” lol.
I listen to my Colbert playlist every now and then when I get the urge or when I think of it. Usually after he sings a new song on the show I add that to the playlist and then end up listening to all the other songs on the playlist.
But the playlist on my iPod which I’ve been listening to most recently is one which includes all the songs from Glee! I’ve become so obsessed with that show lately! =)

Today’s Weekend Brunch inspired me! After seeing the songs on DB’s list, I thought, “Gee, there’s a bunch of good performances on the show that I don’t see mp3′s of out there,” so I decided to make some myself.
Now YOU TOO can have mp3′s for your playlist by clicking here: http://www.mediafire.com/?hw5jbzz2itj
ZIP file includes: “Let My People Go,” with Andrew Young, Malcolm Gladwell and the Harlem Gospel Choir, “I Write the Songs” with Barry Manilow, “Who’s Got the Last Laugh Now” with Tony Bennett, and two versions of the Star Spangled Banner — one with Rep. John Hall and one with Steve Carell. Enjoy, Zoners!

Thank you! My Stephen playlist is pretty extensive, but I didn’t have any of those.

Thank you SO MUCH! I don’t have any of these as I was never able to find them. You rock!
I love this place. :D

I *do* have a Stephen mix in my iTunes, but it’s way too long to name everything on there!! I’ve got pretty much all the songs he’s sung on the show, and then any songs that simply remind me of Stephen, like “I Want You To Want Me” and “Hey Stephen” by Taylor Swift. I love my Stephen mix, it’s so fun to listen to. :D

I have a mix on my mp3 player called “Stephen Sings”. It has 44 songs on it from pretty much everything Stephen has sung, from The Daily Show, Strangers with Candy, to The Colbert Report. I also have another mix called “Amy,Paul&Stephen soundtrack”, It has around 60 songs and sound clips from Strangers with Candy and Exit 57.

Cheap reward, Girl is Mine, and now This too Shall pass on the ol’ ipod. I do long car trips every few months, so listening to Stephen’s soothing voice helps ease the pain of car travel. I am also amassing quite a collection of eps on my macbook, which I didn’t want to do, but I have no will power.
I’ve been away a while, I realize, but it was more due to me working a ton. It is kind of getting better though, so I am hoping to hang out with you all here.
I wanted to ask: does TCR still do the global edition? I believe I recall TCR getting booted out of Great Britain, but I didn’t know if he still did those.

Yep, both TCR and TDS still do Global Editions. I’m in Oz and they air on the Monday, and then we get the regular show from Tue-Fri. Bliss! :D

I’m the same way. It takes me 50 minutes to and from class, three days a week, so listening to Stephen read “The Lie,” or listening to the Wigfield and IAAASCY audiobooks always makes me happy. :)

I have quite a few on my playlist but I am awanting your Exit 57 stash *grabby hand*
Obviously, I have The Girl is Mine *snerk* and Cheap Reward and various ones from TCR. Wish we still had the video of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (aka Stephen) they pulled it from CN. Wish he had sung with Sharon Jones too, *sigh*

On second thought, I’ve nixed the show version of “This Too Shall Pass”. I understand the enthusiasm, but I just want to stuff a plug in that audience screamer. Too much for earphones, back to the album version instead.

Oh I absolutely have a Stephen playlist on my iPod! Actually, it’s called my “Stevie C” playlist. It’s got: An iTunes Meet The Author with Stephen reading IAAASCY, “I Don’t Feel Like Dancin’” (Best. Fanvid. Ever.), “Holland, 1945″, Movits!, Bloomsday, A Colbert Christmas, the Harvard University 2006 interview, Stephen’s essay from Things I’ve Learned From Women Who’ve Dumped Me, the Charlie Rose interview, Knox College commencement address, “The Lie” (which I listen to quite a bit), the San Francisco Chronicle City Arts & Lectures podcast, the audiobooks for IAAASCY and Wigfield, and pretty much any song he’s sung on the show (ex: Cheap Reward).
DB, I’m glad to see the Weekend Brunch again! I always look forward to it. That’s great that you’re settled into your new place! As for me, I am done with school for 4 months and it feels amazing! I can’t wait to finally read a book for pleasure instead of for homework, and I’ve already got about four concerts lined up for the summer…including that all-important trip to New York City. :]
