The good people at NOVA have been running a web-only series called The Secret Life of Scientists, a series of short films highlighting science and engineering stars talking about some aspect of their lives both in and outside of science. The most recent of the featured scientists is Colbert Report frequent guest and NFZ favorite Neil deGrasse Tyson. The fourth video, “10 Questions for Neil,” is of special interest to us because he answers the all-important question “Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert?” It also features a snippet of one of my favorite Fallback Position segments, Stephen learning how to be an astrophysicist. There are three more videos in addition to the one below; make sure you head over to the Secret Life of Scientists web site to watch them all! I especially enjoyed the third video, “Living the Universe,” because Dr. Tyson discusses his cosmic tie collection, and why it’s “spaghetti-proof.” Hee!
And for some cosmic laughs, here’s the aforementioned Fallback Position video. I still say “ewww” every time I see Stephen lick that meteor!

That was MASSIVE! What a great interview with Dr. Tyson. I wish we could do the same with Jon and Stephen, oh, and Steve ColberT as well! LOL

I was thinking “Who’s Not Honoring Me Now,” but I like your idea better.
NDT, you got some ‘splainin’ to do! ;)

Wow I’ve been surprised twice lately on the Jon or Stephen question. Someone asked Keith Olbermann if he preferred The Daily Show or The Colbert Report and I though for sure he’d pick TDS but he picked Colbert! Then I assumed Neil would pick Stephen. To me, it’s just all gravy! :D

Bahahah! That was me! I asked him that! *is so proud*

Woah, KO chose TCR? Color me surprised as well! I really really thought Neil would choose Stephen. Way to throw a curve ball. It would be great if we could see the On Notice board again… :D
Fun video, thanks!

Keith’s choice surprises me, too … not that I’m complaining!

Thanks for all your concerns about my choice of Jon over Stephen. What’s not captured in the rapid-fire questioning of the video is “Why?” Answer: A Colbert interview is by far the hardest interview I do, requiring a level of preparation without equal that heavily taps my mind, wit, and knowledge. Jon is hard too, but a distant second from Colbert, making interviews with Jon a more relaxed affair for me. For more detail, have a look at this print interview: http://tinyurl.com/m6xsnv In any case, thanks all of you for your interest.

Well, you certainly don’t make it seem hard, sir. You always do a great job in the interviews, and the interaction with both of them is always great. Keep it up!

Wow! Hi there, Dr. Tyson! So neat to see you commenting here! You always seem to have so much fun being interviewed by Stephen, but thanks for the explanation! Love seeing you on either show! :D

I love this! I’m a PC fan myself, but I love NDT’s comment, “Everytime I use a PC, I feel like I have to bathe or something.” Haha!

Thank you, Dr. Tyson, for bringing science and astronomy to life the way you do. I’ve never seen anyone speak so passionately about what they do, and I think we should all be so lucky as to one day be able to do what they love so passionately for a living. You are an inspiration to us all. Looking forward to seeing you on the show again soon!
