Episode 6056 (4/22/2010)

Colbert Report Episode guideEPISODE NUMBER: 6056 (April 22, 2010)
GUESTS: Gorillaz [Jamie Hewlett and Damon Albarn]
SEGMENTS: The WØRD: Straight To Video, The Bonus WØRD: Defamation of Independents
VIDEOS: Thursday, April 22, 2010

If I have a few extra typos this morning, or get a bit rambly, please forgive me. I woke up early this morning because I had to switch my shift around a bit at work. Today I’m speaking at the UT – Dallas campus in Randy Hoyt’s class as a guest lecturer. I’ll be talking about how to build an online community with your website. So yeah, guys, I’m talking about you and how great you are. So everybody smile and wave! Or, you know, comment. That’s why we’re so great as a community, right?

I was loving the WØRD and basking in the take down of William Gheen, but then Stephen perked right up after it ended and he went at it again with the Bonus WØRD. I’ve been around a long time as a fan, and while the bonuses may come around less frequently than they may have when I first watched the show, the second round is even tastier than the first because it’s just so unexpected. I love it when he surprises me like that. The “Looking For Mr. Goodwrench” line in The Bonus WØRD made me think about Stephen’s earlier career as a Goodwrench spokesperson. Also, the people who are selling the Mr. Goodwrench bobbleheads on eBay are extremely proud of them. I mean, $150? Sheez, most would consider me a pretty big fan, and even *I* am not stupid enough to pay that much. But I digress.

Okay, ladies, let’s have just a little fangirl moment together, shall we? We’ve seen a lot of Alternative Stephens – Romulan Stephen, WPTS Mustached Stephen, Esteban Colberto, Formidable Opponent Dual Stephen. But oh my heavens, Steve ColberT was so amazingly cute and sweet and adorkable. It took me five minute to get past the “This is … cool” line. His little hair brushed forward, and those brown shoes that he seems to wear a lot when he’s off camera, and the little striped shirt and North Face jacket …. *swoon* Okay, it’s been a long time since I had a serious fangirl moment, and I’m just a little woozy. I blame that second round for getting me all relaxed, and this was like the after seconds cigarette. Holy cow! Was it just me? It was also adorable to see Stephen slip out of character slightly when Damon Albarn touched his leg, and then to watch him gently slip back into Steve. You know what, I can’t wait until the end of my summary, I just gotta post the video of Steve Colbert right the frick now.

Also, I was very impressed that Albarn worked so hard to keep it straight. Jamie Hewlett had no such success, but he definitely seemed to be enjoying himself. I also really liked the musical performance. What a bonus treat to get to see Bobby Womack sing.

This was an amazingly strong show. I’m still a bit swoony. Let’s show some love for it in the comments!

The Bonus WORD

  • That’s right – suck it trees!
  • I’m not surprised these guys have a special kinship with the global warming crowd, folks. Because the newspapers are the only things disappearing faster than the polar ice caps.
  • In fact, I’m about to out somebody right now – the Michelin man. I happen to know he’s into rubber.
  • But of course, all the best ones are taken.
  • Senator Graham needs to convince us he’s straight, but how? [Losing The Name "Lindsay"?]
  • I know. What a whore.
  • Lindsay Graham, save your good name by releasing a sex tape. [On "C-Span After Dark"] And I have already got a title – Graham Slam.
  • Or Senator David Vitter who is still in office despite being named as a client by the D. C. Madam three years ago and dogged by rumors that he allegedly like prostitutes to dress him up in diapers. Has he been thrown out of office? No, he has not. In fact, I’d say he has been pampered.
  • The Douche Shall Set You Free
  • I mean, two lady senators, sharing the same state, stimulating each other? What kind of Republicans are those? [The Strap-On Caucus?]
  • And what about conservative William Gheen? I just found out that he worked with the Democratic party in the 1990′s. That sounds pretty bipartisan. I’ve got to at least consider the possibility that someone found out he gets off by going to the ballpark on weekends and laying in the trough in the men’s room like a human urinal cake. [Better Than Watching The Mets Play]
  • I just need to know that that’s not true. [Or If It's Just Vitter Again]
  • This is bulls@#t. No, f#$k this, I am not interviewing them! [walks away, comes back dressed up differently] Hi, I’m Steve Colbert, nice to meet you.
  • This is … cool.
  • Stephen left me some of his questions. The first one was “Who the f@# do you think you are?”
  • Second one was, The band is a cartoon, right? A cartoon band? Do they get real groupies? Or do you guys get cartoon groupies? And the follow-up is what’s it like to be knee deep in toon tang?
  • Is Susan Boyle on this album? Because she’s the only England singer Americans care about right now.
  • S@#t, this is a fun job. I don’t know why he ever complains.

I had an incredibly trying day yesterday, and this show just made everything better. Stephen always seems to have my favorite bands as musical guests.

Also, I’m totally in love with aging-hipster fanboy, Steve ColberT. A bit swoony is right!

This was one of the absolute best episodes ever. Loved the Word, and yay for the Bonus Word! Both of them were excellent – especially the last line to the Bonus Word.

I’m a definite fan of Gorillaz, so I was already looking forward to the interview, but having “Stephen” walk off the show so that Steve ColberT could interview the guys behind the band was all kinds of genius. That was the most adorkable interview ever. Loved seeing him in his street clothes (how cute was that striped shirt!), and he was just amazingly cute throughout the whole thing. I just…he was so cute that I can’t even talk about it anymore! *squeal* :]
I will say that the Sign Off was really great – I especially loved the “S@#t, this is a fun job. I don’t know why he ever complains.” line. And the musical performance was wonderful! I can’t wait to buy their new CD.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • Erika says:

You said everything I wanted to say! I feel exactly the same. I can barely speak about how adorable on all levels that was.

        :D
I watched the Steve ColberT part again during my lunch break, and I was still giddy over how adorkable he is! I’m guaranteed to be in a smiley mood the rest of the day because of it. :]

By the way, “toontang” is one of the funniest words I have ever heard.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  6. Michele says:

Excellent show! Two great Words and I personally think the bonus one had a bit more “oomph”, then a fun interview and good performance by Gorillaz. Fanboy Steve ColberT was the perfect addition.

Hope the lecture goes well DB!

  7. MaryLovesColbert says:

I haven’t gotten a chance to see the entire episode yet, but this was the BEST way to start off my morning – with a clip of little Steve Colbert. That was absolutely adorable! He was so innocent with those jerk-y questions “Stephen” left for him. Lol. Thanks for posting the video, DB! Really cheered me up! :D

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  8. Katydidnt says:

It was not at all just you, DB. The minute shy little Steve ColberT showed up, I wanted to reach into the TV and ruffle his hair. So cute! I hope we will see him on the show again.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  9. Bri says:

This episode was made of complete win. Two Words. And an appearance by Steve ColberT who I wanted to eat up with a spoon. I honestly do love how Stephen’s mind works.
I had questioned how the animated Gorillaz were going to perform and I enjoyed what came of that.
I think I’m going to be watching this episode again real soon.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  10. jensen says:

*Damon Albarn, not David Albern. But yes, oh god, I was squeeing the entire episode. I’m a Stephen fangirl AND a Gorillaz/Jamie Hewlett fangirl, so this was like freakin’ Christmas. Not to mention awkward little Steve ColberT, so good. :B

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • DB says:

Thanks for the catch – I got it right twice, but missed it once. Did I mention I woke up way to friggin’ early?!

And welcome to No Fact Zone! So glad to see new faces here!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

Great show — loved the Word/Bonus Word and Steve ColberT. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a Bonus Word before!!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • DB says:

Well, he did say it was the first. Hence the confetti drop. And it was quite cool, wasn’t it?

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

      • nerdygirl says:

Ah. Allow me to say “duh.”

It was cool — it was like finding a secret hidden level in a video game.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

        • DB says:

          I love that description!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

        • lockhart43 says:

“it was like finding a secret hidden level in a video game”

Yes! I’m with DB – that is the perfect way to describe it. :]

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  13. Roseha says:

I just loved Steve ColberT as well, what can I say except that I’ve been watching since Jan. 09 nonstop and Stephen’s ability to come up with unexpected new things keeps amazing me. and to have this sweet other persona suddenly appear was so perfect. Stephen’s acting cannot be appreciated too much.

“I don’t know why he complains.” Hee.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  14. Laaaura says:

I gotta agree with you all: Steve ColberT? Way too adorkable! ^_^

  17. Jerzegrl says:

TO ALL COLLEGE KIDS DB IS SHOWING THIS TO: SHE (AND THE OTHER COMPLETISTS) ARE “AWESOMESAUCE”!
That said…Steve Colbert was, hands down, my favorite segment in the 3 years I’ve been watching the Report. So cute, like he just wandered into an alternate reality & was totally confused why he was there. He does the scruffy, fluffy hair thing well:-)
    “Gorillaz” collaboration…INSANE!!
Saying the 2nd time around he’s not so good, then nonchalantly rocking a great Bonus Word…so looking forward to the next 2 years!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  18. Katt says:

What a way to kick off the ANZAC Day long weekend.

Steve ColberT is so cute he could melt a polar ice cap!! And bonus “Word” makes staying in on a Friday night so worth it. I really enjoyed the Gorillaz performance, I’d heard bad reviews about “Plastic Beach” but I really liked that song.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  19. friedthing says:

Oh my god, between Steve and the Gorillaz, the alter-egometer must have blown a fuse last night! And then for them to sit there and discuss the concept of “persona”? So many levels of awesome!!! And TWO Words?! Definitely my favorite episode in a while!

    Aaaaaaadorable!!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  20. lockhart43 says:

By the way, did anyone else watch TDS last night? Other than bringing back that fantastic gospel choir, Jon did a segment in response to the recent South Park censorship ordeal. So they put together an array of clips showing the many, many religion jokes on the show – needless to say, there were quite a few This Week In God/Correspondent Stephen clips! :D

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  21. Silvarius says:

Agreeing with everyone else that Steve ColberT was too cute. He kind of reminds me of what Stephen might have been like before going off to Second City. Maybe that’s just me.

The Bonus Word was cool. Both Words were pretty strong, I think. Even if Stephen doesn’t think his second is as good as his first.

I was excited for the Gorillaz only cause one friend of mine from Twitter is a big Gorillaz fan and she immediately let me know they would be on the show Thursday. I was worried that she would be put off by “Stephen” since she had never watched the show before. All week she was sending me updates that other Gorillaz fans were excited to see them and Stephen interact. Needless to say, I asked her what she thought after the show and she genuinely enjoyed Stephen, saying he was funny.(One of her comments to me since I missed part of the original airing was that “there’s a bonus word, which I’m guessing is an exciting thing”.) Apparently, I had no need to worry.

Just thought I would share that story. Sorry to ramble.

  22. colbaby says:

I haven’t had a chance to watch the show yet, but I just watched the Steve Colbert part you posted and nearly vomited a rainbow. They could have shown a basket full of puppies inside a larger basket full of kittens inside an even larger basket full of baby monkeys and it wouldn’t have been that cute. It’s like he’s made himself, or sort of a younger version of himself, a character on the show. Awesomeness.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • Eris says:

      LOL

I seem to be the only one who didn’t get a cute vibe, just a sexy vibe.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

      • lockhart43 says:

OH no, trust me, the sexy vibe was totally there! But for as sexy as Steve ColberT was, the adorkableness factor was just ten fold. I think it was the striped polo shirt and that hair. :P

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

      • Michele says:

I didn’t get either sort of vibe. I just thought it was brilliant to remove the character to interview the musicians behind Gorillaz. I loved it!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  23. John says:

Steve ColberT was awesome! That is how I’ve heard him described while off-character, and it was even more charming than I could have imagined!

And a jump for joy for Gorillaz on the show! Woo!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  24. luvtcr says:

I heart Steve ColberT. I really hope he returns everyonce in a while it was just too cute. The geek in me wants to know how they edited it all together – I wish I had been in the audience to see!

The bonus word was fun and a great excuse to shred some more trees on Earth Day (but more environmentally friendly than a ballooon drop!) Stephen’s quip about going twice with The Word was fun innuendo. Did anyone else picture Stephen as Mr. Goodwrench when it was mention by the Bullet during TheWord? Again, geek here!

    Have a great weekend everybody!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • lockhart43 says:

Oh, I totally pictured Stephen as Mr. Goodwrench during the Word! Actually, I think it’s about time I head over to youtube and watch those ads again. :)

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  25. jbirdNZ says:

Oh d’oh! I’ll have to wait to see the epi due to work commitments but by DB’s great little report and all the awesome comments, I just cannot wait for the day to pass by to get to this great episode. Stephen ColberT, yay! And to DB :waves back from East of Downunder:

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  26. GabbyD says:

i have a question, since i dont know anything about gorillaz…

that murdoc dude who called, he said that the people being intereviewed arent the real band? it that true?

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • lockhart43 says:

Nope, they are the real band as in, they are the real-life performers behind the cartoon personas. Murdoc, the cartoon persona, was telling Stephen that his band wouldn’t be there and Damon and Jamie would be “representing them.” So “Stephen” wouldn’t interview them if they weren’t the real band, so that’s why Steve ColberT was brought on. That’s why it was so brilliant, because both Stephen and the people behind Gorillaz ended up doing the real interview, and the characters were gone.

      Does that help? :D

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  27. sophie says:

    oh my goodness!

I’m not sure if i can write what i want to write in an intelligent and coherent manner but

like everyone else is saying, I can’t get over how adorable and geeky Stephen ColberT was
I mean just the outfit was enough to give me a fangirl high but with the nerdyness and adorableness and the soft-spokeness I DIED!!

Im guessing Stephen ColberT is the closest were gonna get to seeing the “real” Stephen on the show.
I HOPE colberT comes back :)

and also I’ve read 1 or 2 comments about how Stephen ColberT seemed like a younger version of the real Stephen
but from what i understand Stephen was kind of a douche when he was younger (in his college years)

oh and the bonus word was excellent!!!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  28. Karenatasha says:

What a show! A double-helping of Word and a double-scoop of delicious Stephen (Steve) Colbert (ColberT). And the Gorillaz, sounding great. (I guess you could say they were doubled too, because you have the animated and real bands.) So this was two-times super on every level. And I, like so many here, love the way Stephen constantly surprises us, coming up with the unexpected every time. What a pleasure.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  29. Karenatasha says:

Oh, and DB: what do you teach?

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  30. wren says:

Fantastic Word! Double-fantastic Bonus Word! Confetti drop! Indignant Rage! Tank Girl! Mick Jones!

    And Steve ColberT: Sweet-spicy-adorkable-hot!

I’m missing all the connecting words because they’re mostly just smiles :D

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  31. I heart Steve ColberT. :) Awesome show, with a Bonus Word to boot. :D

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  32. Rein says:

I wonder what it would be like to have Steve ColberT host one whole show… He was adorable! Even my sister, who doesn’t watch that often, said he was “Cute!” hehe

He’s probably the closest we can ever get to see the real Stephen on the show… wish we’ll see more of him!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  33. ColbertGirl27 says:

    Dear TCR and Comedy Central,

Please show more of Steve ColberT, the most adorable man on television.
