Episode 6055 (4/21/2010)

Colbert Report Episode guideEPISODE NUMBER: 6055 (April 21, 2010)
GUESTS: Craig Robinson
SEGMENTS: The WØRD: No Problemo, Nailed ‘Em
VIDEOS: Wednesday, April 21, 2010

Being from Texas, the immigration struggle hits pretty close to home. Once, when there were some particularly heated discussions going on about immigrations, a woman from Guatemala and a woman whose parents were from Mexico but born in the US were having a rather heated discussion about what should be done about immigration. I looked at them both, and said, “I’m a citizen of the Cherokee nation, and I want all of you to get the hell out.” True story.

I’m not sure why young white teenagers are so funny. It was so obvious they were trying their darnest to be cool, and the kids actually came off looking pretty, well, normal. It’s impossible for me to hear rapping in drive throughs without thinking about “Weird Al” Yankovic’s Trapped in the Drive-Thru. I also enjoyed hearing from Craig Robinson, who talked about his new book “A Game of Character”. I enjoyed listening to the ridiculous questions that Stephen had for him about vetting and being the first brother-in-law.

What did all of you enjoy about tonight’s episode?

Stephen Colbert in a gray tie

  • Wait a second, [Benjamin Franklin turns into Na'Vi] that is nice! If Avatar is any indication, these new hundreds are going to make billions.
  • That could easily be a tub of jalapeño chedder.
  • And with one of these new $100′s who knows how many $0.99 tacos I could buy. Like a thousand.
  • The Mexicans are coming. Someone arrest that graphic!
  • What if JFK had said “Ich bin ein Berliner” in Spanish?
  • And I believe they are allowed to taser anyone who uses the word Chipotle.
  • Folks, this is not Jim Crow. [Actually Juan Crow]
  • Illegal immigrants have it too cushy. [C'mon, Univision *And* Telemundo?]
  • … or Italians, because, you know, the olive skin, and let’s face it, ravioli is just a wet empenada …
  • How it is in suburban Utah.
  • Rap – Creation
  • “Safety” “Risk”
  • It wasn’t violent and there weren’t any swear words in it, it was mostly about lettuce and chicken.
  • And if opposites attract, does that mean that the president is a devil?
  • Or is being on this show your scandal?

A very silly show! I wonder if people really will mail him money–I see on the website that they say they will mail it back.

I loved everything about this show! The Word was massive, Nailed Em was hilarious and disturbing, (Rapping over a drive-thru intercom made a woman fear for her safety?!) and the interview was fantastic! All that I hoped for. It was so great that Robinson was such an it-getter. I also loved the look on Stephen’s face after the malt liquor comment. He acted like “Did I just say that?” “Out loud!”
    Too funny!

I agree with you- I loved the interview as well! I wonder if he consulted his sister and brother-in-law regarding their interactions with Stephen?! ;)

I wondered that, too. Especially after hearing what Robert Gates has said about what a great interviewer Stephen is. I like to think that Obama and his wife gave Robinson some tips. :P

A great show! As always, I loved The Word, which I fully intend to put on my Facebook page so that everyone I know sees it. Everything else was on a super-high level–even for Stephen. (And that’s high, indeed.)

Do you think it’s too late to ask Mrs. Robinson to adopt me?

I loved the drive-thru segment! And aside from the fact that “no problemo” is nonsense Spanish (and that “topico” does not mean topic, etc, etc), the Word was great too! Robinson was kinda soft-spoken but did a good job with “Stephen” overall.

Jon had a nice shout-out (hey!) to our favorite “son of a turd miner” last night too :)

      I caught that! :-)

Great show! The Word was excellent and the Nailed ‘Em segment was just hilarious. The interview was quite enjoyable as well. Robinson was such a good sport!

“Jon had a nice shout-out (hey!) to our favorite ‘son of a turd miner’ last night too”

I cheered after he said that! Such a great shout-out to Stephen and the days of Indecision ’04.

I wish I had that kind of money to send…do you think he would give it back- with interest?! I’ll take some VIP tickets!

The Word was perfect. One of my student teachers wants to show it to her government class. Ravioli as a wet Empanada?! I could almost taste it!

Another fantastic episode last night! I loved the Word. So. Much. The ninja comment had me cracking up, but everything about Arizona’s decision is ridiculous to me, and I love Stephen for pointing that out. And I always love a good “Nailed ‘Em” and the one last night was definitely a great one!

I enjoyed the interview, and Robinson seems like a very nice man. I really liked what he said about leaving Wall Street because he wanted to do something that did more “giving rather than more taking.” Although throughout the entire interview I just kept looking at him and seeing his sister, lol. It is crazy how much they look alike!

  9. I loved The WORD and the interview. Very awesome smackdown of Arizona immigration bill. “Reasonable suspicion”? What the heck does that mean, exactly? I have a cousin who’s currently based there and I’m praying that her family will not be subjected to this.

Funny interview with Craig Robinson. I loved his philosophy of giving back, and he left Wall Street to do that. Very admirable. :)

    • lockhart43 says:

“Reasonable suspicion” means a feeling that any reasonable person would have about something. It’s sort of the same thing as common sense. In law enforcement, you are not supposed to act only on reasonable suspicion – you normally have to go by probable cause. And “mere suspicion” is even a step below “reasonable suspicion,” meaning you act based only on a gut feeling.

Hope that helps! Sorry for the long explanation lol, but I’m a criminal justice student, so this whole thing is incredibly frustrating to me. It’s basically racial profiling against anyone who looks Mexican or Hispanic; they’re just hiding behind the reasonable suspicion standard.

      • Thanks! My dad’s a lawyer and sometimes we get into conversations like these, so it’s no problem, though our conversations tend to lean toward labor laws. :)

And there’s nothing reasonable about this law. It’s racial profiling, as you said. Thanks again! :)

        • lockhart43 says:

You’re welcome! Oh that’s cool – what kind of lawyer is your dad?

It’s just frustrating to me that they would rather be harsher with the laws in a broken system than try to work to fix it in the first place. Plus, like Stephen said, they’re just costing the state and the people that live in it more and more money. But I digress. ;)

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

        • @lockhart43:

My dad specializes in labor laws (specifically obligations and contracts between lessor and lessee, employer-employee, etc.) here in the Philippines. He’s also a mediator. :)

I wish I could show this video of the word to everyone I know here in AZ who supports this bill. It’s ridiculous that it has such widespread support here. I’m interested to see how many times I get pulled over and asked for my papers. I’ve already been pulled over several times for ridiculous things such as “license plate light out” even though I suspect it was more for “driving while brown” Guess I’ll have to make some extra copies of my birth certificate to carry around with me.
