Klassic Kolbert: The Art of the Sandwich

Hey, y’all! We’re sorry to keep you waiting for today’s Episode Guide, but it’s one of those rare days when we’re all busy and don’t get to blog to our hearts’ content. And that’s a particular tragedy, considering what a gut-bustingly funny show we got last night. How great was the “German Ambassador”? Or that WØRD?

My favorite segment of the night was the “Thought for Food” segment, in part because of the aforementioned attempt at cupcake diplomacy. But another reason I loved it so was because Stephen’s characterization of the KFC “Double Down” as a “sandwich that lacks all sandwichness!” reminded me of one of my favorite bits from Stephen’s Daily Show days, his turn as Senior Conceptual Art Correspondent to discuss “The Gates”. As soon as Stephen said “sandwichness” last night, my mind went to Stephen’s encounter with the “installation artist”, who wrapped and wrapped a sandwich until “he had visually achieved ‘not sandwich’” before revealing the true genius of his work in his final act of “re-sandwichment”.

While we patiently await the time one of us can complete the full Episode Guide for last night’s show, please enjoy a repeated viewing of “The Gates“!

Ha! Too funny – I immediately thought of the same segment!

I took a bunch of modern art history back in the day (ahem), and had a prof who was super-crazy into Christo (as in he showed us vacation slides from when he worked on the Pink Islands project). Apart from liking the art itself, I quite enjoyed the game of constructing abstruse, lofty prose out of absolutely nothing. “Re-sandwichment” is an incandescent example of the same :D

Good call, MsI! As soon as I saw the title I knew what video you were posting

I remember seeing this when it first aired and telling everyone I knew what a brilliant piece it was. I’ve seen it 100 times and laugh all the way through it – from the putting NY on the cultural map to the air quotes. And ya gotta love the beard…

One of my absolute favorite segments from Stephen’s senior correspondent days! The “I’m sorry, I’ve run out of crap” line makes me laugh hysterically every time.

LOL … oh, that has to be in my top three segments of all time favorite Klassic Colbert … that and the one with him being Al Sharpton … oh, marvelous! How it just about always eats what he can eat. The only time I remember him turning it down was when it was ice cream during lent.

  8. DB says:

I love the five-stroker line, and how you can see Stephen mouthing “four” as Jon just looses himself in giggles. Plus the combination of the scruff and the pea coat/dark outfit is, well, a bit hawt. A bit.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up +1
