Episode 6050 (4/13/2010)

EPISODE NUMBER: 6050 (April 13, 2010)
GUESTS: Jon Mooallem
SEGMENTS: Dow Hits 11,000, The WØRD – Lost Cause, Thought For Food – Mentally Ill Advertisers & German Cupcakes
VIDEOS: Tuesday, April 13, 2010

Welcome to the Episode Guide: Late Edition!  The Completists have been, individually and collectively, pretty swamped today, but we’re back now with a new guide.  I have to say that, in my own crazy day, a lunchtime date with TCR was an absolute sanity-saver.   I enjoyed Stephen’s nod to Conan’s new deal with TBS (“unemployment is way down”).  I had been hoping for a return to NYC (so the boys can get back together where they belong), but it looks like his show will be taping in LA.

I’m loving the new Thought For Food segment, not least for the adorable brain-eating burger graphic, with its sweet PSA-style music.  And any excuse for Stephen to play with food is fine by me.  One bite of the KFC Double-Down, and he’s in for 30 seconds of chewing, swallowing, and tidying up (“Welcome to the show”).  But the exchange with “Ambassador” Heinz Beinholt takes the (cup)cake.  Apart from his hilariously grim responses, I thought it was pretty funny that, just for a moment, I wondered if they had gotten the actual UN ambassador to play along, à la Henry Kissinger.  It’s the Report – stranger things have happened!

What did you enjoy most about tonight’s episode?

  • Nation, praise the Lord and pass the guacamole, because America is back!
  • Now, folks, I don’t have to tell you what it means when the Dow hits 11,000, which is good, because I don’t know what it means.
  • 11,000 Dows? Dowmations? Moist Dowlettes? Whatever.
  • Which is why this month, bumper stickers will read ‘Virginia is for Lovers of Embarrassing Chapters in American History’.
  • Hey, there are only 30 days in April. Day 31 would have been Mention Slavery Day.
  • As if I should be ashamed of my stars & bars tramp stamp.
  • Exactly, the Civil War was fought over states’ rights [To Own Slaves].  It was fought to preserve the unique Southern way of life [Slave-Owning].
  • We weren’t slave-holders, we were slavahs.  Ya, you all my slavahs in the house! Slavah, please!
  • This is deep fried madness! It is breaded insanity! It is a sandwich that lacks all sandwichness! It’s like an edible Hieronymus Bosch painting wrapped in a paper straightjacket!
  • “Ambassador” Beinholt: Why would you celebrate the slowly tightening grip of death? Does the child eat this to help him forget that he is decaying?
  • You discuss findings of a biologist studying albatrosses that might be lesbians. I have a word for that: Albatresbians.
  • I would say penetrating each others’ blowholes might be one way to show that.  I doubt anyone’s gonna forget that happened.  Penetrate one blowhole, follows you the rest of your life, but it did happen.

I’m loving the food segments! The German ambassador made me laugh so hard with “Does the child eat this to help him forget that he is decaying?” Hahahaha :) And I guess I can overlook the recycled joke about bipolar mounds bars, because, well, it fit so perfectly! I don’t, however, appreciate hearing the chewing in the microphone, but I’ll forgive him because he’s Stephen.

I also really liked the guest steering the discussion away from, “Well, if there are gay animals then it’s natural, and if there aren’t, then it’s not” and towards “Why are we looking at the animal kingdom anyway for validation of this one aspect of human behavior?” I hadn’t really thought about that before.

“Thought for Food” is becoming one of my favorite segments! The German “ambassador” was so utterly hilarious and ridiculous. XD

I just love thought for food! It’s becoming a fav of mine even as I recoil in horror at some of the awful stuff TCR has dug up from present day eating habits. This was an idea waiting to happen and Stephen and co are doing a great job.

I was waiting to see how Stephen would reference Conan’s new show and he didn’t disappoint, showing Happy Conan with that “Unemployment is Down!”

Maybe at some point Conan will bring his show back to New York for a week and he and Stephen and Jon can get together then.

Yep, had to go with the German “ambassador” because he was so hilariously grim. And German. “Why would you celebrate the slowly tightening grip of death?” LOL. That’s what I’ll be thinking the next time my birthday comes around.

The WØRD was very strong. The interview could have been better. I think the guest was a little intimidated by Stephen. But really, an all-around solidly funny show. My favorite moment? The nice little shout-out to Conan.

“I think the guest was a little intimidated by Stephen.”

I got that feeling, too. It seemed like when Stephen would make a point or even a joke, Mooallem wouldn’t know how to respond and lost his focus. Though I did like the point that he made about “gay” being a human-made word and therefore hard to track in the animal kingdom.

Thanks for the episode guide pinch hitting, wren!
Really strong Word. Stephen being a Southerner (and loving the region) makes it so much more powerful and authentic when he hits back at these crazies & their reinvention of the past. I’m glad he did it!
Like you, wren, I momentarily thought that might be the real ambassador too! He was great. Actually, I’d love to see the “ambassador” team up with “Dash Worthington” from TDS. I think they would make a great team! ;)
@ Lockhart43:When I saw Colbert stick that cupcake in between that KFC monstrosity, my first thought was “Oh God, please don’t let Lockhart think she needs to try this too!” :P

    • lockhart43 says:

Hahahahaha! That’s so great, because when I saw him do that, I said out loud, “Stephen, don’t eat that!”

Trust me. I will not be eating the Double-Down OR the Double-Down-And-Cupcake-Sandwich any time soon. But you’re awesome for thinking of me. :P And oh my holy Lord, Dash Worthington and Heinz Beinholt would make the best team ever! They could fight crime, provided it was before their naptime at 4:30pm. ;)

        Hallelujah! :]
“And oh my holy Lord, Dash Worthington and Heinz Beinholt would make the best team ever! They could fight crime, provided it was before their naptime at 4:30pm”
LOL! That would fantastic! Or maybe they could become the new Lemmon & Matthau and star in remakes of “The Odd Couple” & “Grumpy Old Men.” Over. ;)

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

        • lockhart43 says:

Haha yes! They might have to revamp the scripts though – Heinz can talk about the slow, tightening grip of death, and Dash can fall asleep. This is a match made in comedy and old guy heaven. Over. :P

    • Karenatasha says:

I agree, Lockhart, with how powerful the Word was, and the fact that he’s a proud Southerner makes it all the more meaningful. I feel the same way when he takes aim at the Pope’s/Catholic church’s current abuses. Because he is a practicing Catholic, no one can say he’s just out to get them or doesn’t respect the religion.

Thanks for doing the episode guide today wren!

I am absolutely loving the Thought For Food segment! The intro always makes me laugh, and I just love how much fun Stephen has with the segment. Any chance to get Stephen to eat something and then spend 30 seconds smirking and trying to get back on track with the bit is never not a good thing. The “welcome to the show” comment made me smile. :] And how fantastic was Heinz Beinholt – that whole segment just had me cracking up!

I think “Stephen” definitely had fun interviewing Mooallem last night, which made it enjoyable. The Word was really great, too (Slavah, please! = Brilliant.). Always nice to hear Stephen’s JFK, er, Southern accent as well haha. :P

  7. Karenatasha says:

But, really, what IS with all the food? Yes, I love his foodie humor (and the German ambassador segment was absolutely hilarious), but he certainly is munching onscreen more than ever!

Yeah. It’s funny but it can also be kind of gross.

Loved the “German Ambassador” and The Word!

I don’t get it – who is the German ambassador?
