Colbert Report Episode guideEPISODE NUMBER: 6038 (March 16, 2010)
GUESTS: Prof. Eric Foner, Rebecca Skloot
SEGMENTS: Stephen Colbert’s I’s On Edjukashun, Stephen Colbert’s Thought for Food
VIDEOS: Tuesday, March 16, 2010

Being a result of the Texas public school system, plus a History major from East Texas State University, I cannot express to you all my displeasure at what is going on with history textbooks in Texas. Stephen barely scratched the surface at the particular level of crazy that they did to the Texas history textbooks. I wish these nuts and the nuts who are turning the bible conservative would just sit quietly in a big room and wait it out until the Rapture comes.

And as God as my witness, I will never, ever have a web site where people can pay to watch me eat.

I really enjoyed the Rebecca Skloot interview. It was very interesting to hear the stories of the life of Henrietta Lacks, and what happened to her family. I know that MsInterpreted has raved about this book, and after seeing it, I’m definitely going to have to get a copy for my Nook.

What did you all enjoy about the episode? I mean, other than the faux striptease and that mesmerizing tie?

Stephen Colbert inhales Le Whif

  • Well, two can play at that game Barack “Joe”bama.
  • I will see your taking off your jacket and raise you taking off my pants.
  • Luckily like a good conservative, I always wear my underjacket. And my underpants.
  • You see, Texas schoolboard decisions affect school systems across the country. That’s why most sex ed books have chapters on the reproductive system, abstinence, and how to castrate a steer.
  • Board members removed any reference to Thomas Jefferson, author of the Declaration of Independence. You see, Jefferson coined the term “Separation of Church and State”. So Texas has coined the term Separation of Jefferson and History.
  • Do you even know the name of North’s Fox news show? Neither do I, so I guess we both have a 90.
  • They say that those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it. But if you change what history was, doesn’t that solve that problem?
  • I say reach for the stars with that stick you use to scratch your ankle.
  • We can’t all be the world’s heaviest woman in the world. I gave up that dream a long time ago.
  • That’s right – we Americans have so much food in this country that we’re letting our pets s#!t in it.
  • Wow, so we’re talking a big woman.
  • I have homeless cells?!

While I did enjoy the faux striptease (and that tie IS fantastic!), my favorite part of the episode by far was the character breaks in the Thought for Food segment. I loved that clever “I swallowed my tongue” ad-lib, and the le Whif bit was just adorable. Last night was just one of those episodes where you knew early on that Stephen would break character at some point, so when he did, it was awesome. :]

I won’t even talk about the Texas school board decision because it angers me so much. So I will just say that I really enjoyed the Rebecca Skloot interview – it was incredibly fascinating, and I will definitely be checking out the book.

Oh! And this was such a great line – “Do you even know the name of North’s Fox news show? Neither do I, so I guess we both have a 90.” HA!

Hmm, I haven’t voted yet, because I can’t decide which part I liked best. Everything was fantastic! Loved the character breaks, though the Whif stuff actually looked kind of painful to use. I totally wanted Rebecca Skloot to tell Stephen that he was indeed an immortal now, but it was equally funny that they threw the cells away :). For some reason I feel sort of intrusive looking at someone else’s cells, though!

Also, the line about giving up the dream to be the heaviest woman in the world reminded me weirdly of “I know you want to be homecoming queen, we ALL want to be homecoming queen.”

Woohoo, great show, excellent start to my day!!

    • lockhart43 says:

Yay for the Strangers With Candy reference! I can see how that line would remind you of it…I’ve always thought Chuck Noblet would make an excellent homecoming queen, hahaha. :P

Now I’m reminded of the TCR where Stephen wore the tiara and sash… :]

    • luvtcr says:

I also thought of SWC! I was reminded of Jerri Blank’s line, “Dreams…What’s my dream?”

  3. Katt says:

Can you actually taste the chocolate in Le Whif? Either way Stephen does have a very cute cough and he could have at least rolled his sleaves up for a little while. Such a tease.

I thought the guests book sounds fascinating, I may actually go out and by that book (in my never ending quest for immortality).

  4. Mr. Arkadin says:

The character breaks were awesome! I don’t think there had been a good one lately, & last we got two in a row!
I don’t want to make a fetish out of questioning interviews, but didn’t this one have an odd edit in it? Skloot was talking about that poor woman’s husband & his getting a call from the government, thinking his wife was still being keep alive in a lab twenty yrs. after her death. Stephen in horror exclaimed “Oh my god” or words to that affect & boom! Then their talking about Stephen’s cells! What happened? I wanted to hear more about Henriette’s poor husband!

    • lockhart43 says:

You’re not wrong about the weird edits. I think it just gets hard for them to find a good place to cut and piece the interview together when it goes long. Some edits are just more noticeable than others I guess. The good thing about it though is that it shows how engaged Stephen’s been in the guest interviews this week. :]

      • Mr. Arkadin says:

        Yeah, your probably right.
I wish for a good interview (like Mon. & Tues.) that goes long they would put an unedited version up on CN.com like TDS does. :)

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

        • lockhart43 says:

I was thinking the EXACT same thing. I know it’s hard to do because they have to cut to commercial and then do the ending, but they already show outtakes on the site from other segments. Here’s hoping they can do it at some point in the future. :)

  5. PriyaNoblet says:

UGH MY STUPID LAPTOP IS BEING STUPID AND I CAN’T GET ON HERE ON A REGULAR BASIS ANYMORE :( Makes me wanna cry.

ANYWAY! Holy tease!! Not cool, Mr Colbert, not cool! I was literally jumping up and down in my seat hoping to god he would take off his jacket and role up his sleeves. And i totally lol’d at the idea of him sitting there pantsless. ahhahaha.

Character break! YES!! I was so stoked on that, man. We haven’t had one in ages. It got me thinking about making a fanvid, but i need to figure out a way to save videos off CN.com. …. I also really wanna try Le Whif, call me crazy. hahaha

Dude… Am i the only one that would’ve saved his cells and made me a Colbert clone?

Also: Is it just me, or did the guest seem like she was kinda into Stephen? No Jane Fonda, but still… i sensed a little something something.

    • Erika says:

most women guests seem to be into him at least a little bit. Smiley and giggly… :)

    • Argon says:

Couldn’t you do the same thing with sample of his “Formula 401 Manseed” just as well?

I would’ve bet that using that for cloning had been thought of before since that has been available for some time.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • lockhart43 says:

“…did the guest seem like she was kinda into Stephen?”

First of all, yes it kind of did :P, and second, this makes me think of the George Stephanopoulos interview when he said that Diane Sawyer said Stephen was “flirty”…it’s not Stephen’s fault that he’s charming and has an adorable smile. :]

  6. Jennie says:

I’m having trouble deciding – but I think I’ll go with the ‘Edjukashun’ segment. Wow – Thomas Jefferson as subversive. If I had ever imagined that this would be possible, I would have been praying that this day would never come. Simply amazing.

But my favorite quote came from another segment: “It is always a great idea to make something people consume compulsively and make it inhalable. I just hope that someday they will come up with a powdered version of Coke.”

    • juice says:

I love how he managed to toss off the Coke, um, crack with a straight face.

Excellent pun, my friend – I definitely laughed when I read this!

  7. Ciara B says:

AMAZING show!!! I was at the taping last night. Got talking to a guy in the line and turned out he was from Malaysia. I told him how Stephen likes to “collect” friends from other countries, and suggested he ask Stephen this during the Q&A. He did… and Stephen brought him up and got his picture taken with him, asking him to repeat a disclaimer, including the line “and I get your kidneys when you die”. It explains why, at the top of the show, Stephen says he has friends from all around the world.

One of the other questions was “What shoe size are you?”. Stephen said “Well you know what they say…” and then said he was a ten, ten and a half. He asked what the girl’s shoe size was, and she replied “eleven”, to which Stephen said “wow, you have a bigger dick than I do…”, which left the audience in hysterics!

Stephen kept flubbing his lines last night, which was hilarious – towards the end he explained that they had been taping for ten weeks now without a break, including the Vancouver Olympics, then paused and said “Daddy needs a drink”.

Got to sit in the front row (they hand out little white tickets for that now, somewhat randomly it seems? Anyone been to a recent taping and know more about this?) so touched Stephen’s hand at the beginning… and he personally shook the hand of everyone in the front row when the show was over. OMG… eye contact with Stephen Colbert… just inches away…yes, I died and went to Colbert Heaven.

    best day ever!!!

Wow! Sounds like you had a great taping, thanks for sharing with us!

Haha – that’s so awesome, that guy gets to be Stephen’s Malaysian friend! Love the shoe size question too – hahaha. Wow…ten weeks without a break, really? That’s insane! And you’re so lucky to have gotten eye contact and a handshake! Oh, my heart.

Thanks for giving us your experience from the taping! :D

Thanks so much for the great report! I’m glad you had such a fantastic time!

Ten weeks? He must be exhausted, although you wouldn’t know it from his happy mood this week. Those are some awesome Q&A questions…especially love Stephen’s response to the shoe size question haha! And thanks for the background on the “friends from all over the world” comment – I knew that must have had something to do with the pre-show, so it’s great to learn what it was about.

I just finished having a discussion regarding the Texas Board of Ed in my office w/fellow social studies teachers. Needless to say we are not very happy but we did all see TCR last night so it helped calm us down a bit. We even brought up the video clip to watch again! I was hoping it would be addressed by Stephen. I think “I’s on Edjukashun” may be one of my new favorite segments.

Love character breaks and Stephen’s constant attempt at advancing his, for lack of a better word, biology as far as it will go! DNA in space, ancestral mapping, and a brief attempt last night to become immortal via his cells!

  9. laughing at nothing says:

SC’s expression after trying Le Whif said all we needed to know about the product. I admired how, after the obvious shock of it, Stephen immediately composed himself and soldiered on with what must have been an awful taste in his mouth.

I learn lessons in the most unlikely of places. ;-D

  10. colbaby says:

I work as a cell culture tech for a diagnostics lab, so I got a kick out of seeing Stephen’s cells on the big screen. I primarily work with cells from African green monkeys and rhesus monkeys, and only occasionally with human cells. Oh what I’d give for us to develop a new cell line using Stephen’s tissue, if only so I could tell people that “I work with Stephen Colbert.”

    I loved his dream. :)

Both I’s on Edjukashun and Thought for Food were really good. I find the Texas School Board’s decisions to be very disturbing to say the least. I also enjoyed the interview with Rebecca Skloot. I need to get that book!

I was watching this episode again today and totally forgot to mention how much I LOVED the Charlie Chaplin bit he did with his fake feet! I always appreciate an homage to The Tramp’s fork and roll marionette dance. :)

    • ColbertGirl27 says:

Aw, yes! I’m glad someone else caught that as well! From The Gold Rush, right? Stephen was so cute when he did that. Wish he had done it longer:)

Yes! Love The Gold Rush, it’s a total classic, although The Great Dictator is my favorite Chaplin film. :-D

I’m glad you caught it too! And yes, I could watch Stephen do that dance all day long.
