Episode 6036 (3/11/2010)

Colbert Report Episode guideEPISODE NUMBER: 6036 (March 11, 2010)
GUESTS: David Aaronovitch
SEGMENTS: Monkey on the Lam
VIDEOS: Thursday, March 11, 2010

All of a sudden I’m craving a Ham and Cheese omelet and I don’t know why. I really enjoyed the interview with Scott Rasmussen and the discussion of how pundits take polls and churn them into the Circle of Meat. It’s the reporting analyst in me, I’m sure. The T-Pain singing was amusing, as always, and I enjoyed how Stephen tied the polling issue into a discussion about what those polls mean in regards to the health care bill being passed.

It’s been so very long since we had a Monkey on the Lam. But to have a drug addict monkey on the lam in drag made the wait worthwhile.

When I don’t quote any of the interview in the guide, it usually means one of three things. First, I slept late and just don’t have time to even watch the interview. Second, it bores me so much I totally tune out. Or, like in this case, #3, I’m enjoying it so much that I forget to type anything. I believe I’ve mentioned that I live about 10 blocks away from the Grassy Knoll here in Dallas, so it’s pretty much a requirement for me to be an aficionado of conspiracy theories. I love to read about them, hear about them, and see what other people actually believe about some of the biggest conspiracy theories out there. I like the concept that conspiracy theories are there to simplify what is often a very complex truth. I also love “Stephen’s” knowledge of some Weekly World News-style theories, like the Cuban Freemason mafia killed JFK so that they wouldn’t discover that Marilyn Monroe was Castro in drag. This, of course, made me think of the wonderful JFK story in “Strangers With Candy” and how Noblet said that Monroe gave JFK a case of syphilis so bad it blew the back of his head off.

Go ahead and take this non-scientific poll, and let us know what you thought about the show in the comments!

Stephen Colbert and a ham dressed up to be Karl Rove

  • Hey Karl, are you feeling all right? Your eyes look a little glazed.
  • It’s just like Pride and Prejudice, but even more prejudice.
  • I’m telling you, this is a gripping who didn’t done it.
  • This, in the biz, is called the Circle of Meat.
  • I wanna buy you a drank. This is harder than it looks.
  • Wow. Those numbers suggest that in terms of it being, health very much is. And only a very small percentage believe it not in terms of isness.
  • Are those donut holes of idiocy in all polls?
  • I love animals. They are the most important part of my favorite sandwiches.
  • I’ll just have to add that to my list of reasons never go to Florida, right behind Parrotheads, cockroaches the size of your car, and the rhythm is gonna get me.
  • Oh my God. He might not be a monkey at all. They may be hunting Iggy Pop.
  • It won’t be long before this junkie money starts turning tricks for drug money. Don’t fall for this, guys. I’ve been burned before.
  • Remember, Robert Pattinson also throws his feces.
  • I don’t care that you just found a stash of Tommy guns, leave me alone!

The Monkey on the Lam was hilarious. The show tonight was absolutely brilliant. That ham did have quite a resemblance to Karl Rove. I think its the glasses that really brought the whole ensemble together. I also believe that Purcell is putting more of his stamp onto the show, and I’m liking what he’s doing so far (note that I love what Allison did–she’s brilliant).

Speaking of Monkey on the Laam, it reminded me of the Ricky Gervais podcasts and “Ooh, Chimpanzee That Monkey News”.

Still disappointed with the lack of TDS to TCR tosses.

I really thought they would do a Toss this week. The shows were really jam-packed this week though – Stephen only did one intro. Here’s hoping they do one next week, preferably Monday. :)

I like the tosses as much as as anyone, but it’s the TDS people who make the call and write them. I’m not sure that we should be disappointed by what The Daily Show chooses to do with its time. It’s not like they “owe” us more Colbert. :)

You’re right. It’s just that sometimes I miss the Jon & Stephen interaction so much that I need someone to blame. ;)

        • Roland says:

I know.. But what i miss most about the old TDS is the interactions. The Carell and Colbert segments of one on one of snarkiness was great. The interactions of fellow correspondents now in TDS just seems to be missing.

Also, I don’t think TDS has an obligation to give us more tosses, but I think they should. Stewart and Colbert’s funniest moments are when they crack each other up. I don’t hardly see any correspondent on TDS making Stewart break—and that I miss.

I can understand what you’re saying, Roland. I think on TDS now, the closest they have to Stephen is John Oliver, who I love. The interaction between John and Jon is always priceless – John’s never afraid to get sarcastic with Jon and that’s normally when I see Jon break.

it was so satisfying when he knifed the ham.

I enjoyed all the props last night, it mixed it up a bit. Also love whenever he eats things. :)

  3. lockhart43 says:

It is scary how much Karl Rove looks like that ham. I laughed SO hard at Stephen’s “glazed” joke. And Stephen can add “Ham that looks like Karl Rove” to the long list of things that he’s licked. :P

I really liked the discussion on polling. When I took an American Government class last year, we spent a good amount of time talking about polls and how unreliable they can be, as well as how much people trust the ones that agree with them and distrust the ones that don’t. I loved Stephen’s “donut holes of idiocy” line.

David Aaronovitch was such a perfect guest for “Stephen.” And DB, as soon as Stephen mentioned JFK and Marilyn Monroe, that “Strangers With Candy” quote is the first thing I thought of!

Maybe we can get the Karl Rove Ham and the references in past episodes of Chris Matthews looking like a giant potato head to come together for a nice, quiet dinner!

Good show! Big fan of the meat grinder to explain polls and pundits. I feel like there have been a few side references to the audience this week during the shows which I love because, to me, it demonstrates how much Stephen connects with his audience and considers them a key player in the show. [musical of Stephen's life, how long he would cheer on Hockey] Anyone been to a taping and care to elaborate? :)

    • lockhart43 says:

I completely forgot to mention the meat grinder! That was such a fantastic metaphor.

I thought the “musical of Stephen’s life” line was an audience joke, too. I would also love to hear more details on that. :)

  5. Michele says:

Ok, so I’ve been dealing with a nasty GI virus since Tuesday night but was actually feeling somewhat better last night and stayed up to watch the show. While I found the meat grinder metaphor very clever it did not help my queasiness. At all. Good show though. I have to get Aaronovitch’s book!

  6. Jennie says:

May I say that this was least Vegetarian-Friendly show he’s done in a long while! I could still giggle at the ham (though I had to wince when he licked it – especially since it did look so much like he was licking Rove). The Truth-Grinder started to make me feel a little queasy. But so do most polls so maybe it was the perfect metaphor.

Great to see MotL back – it’s been too long. I think of Jacob whenever they show up (Hi, Jacob!!)

It must have been a really good interview because it went by so quickly! I was waiting for the next answer and Stephen was wrapping it up. I suspect Sumner Redstone is being blackmailed by the Cuban Mafia…

I’m just glad that’s not my fortune cookie.

That sure was one carnivorous half hour! If only we had the first two acts of this show and the interview from a couple weeks ago with the plate of bacon, we would have had three different incarnations of dead pig! Ew.

hmm.. what a “meaty” episode! (couldnt help it!)
