Episode 6028 (2/25/2010)

Colbert Report Episode guideEPISODE NUMBER: 6028 (February 25, 2010)
GUESTS: Shani Davis, Seth Wescott
SEGMENTS: Freud Rage – The Iceman Counseleth – Shani Davis, Off Notice – Canadian Iceholes
VIDEOS: Thursday, February 25, 2010

Watching this episode, it made me sad to realize that this is the last of the Vancouverage. I’ve so enjoyed rallying behind the US Speedskating team, and getting to know so many of the Olympic athletes through Stephen’s interviews. And oh how I’ve loved that navy sweater and those white pants. It’s been a great week, Team Colbert! Job well done!

Tonight’s Freud Rage was so good! The pep talk, with the long diatribe about how Stephen now owes the mob money, was extremely giggle provoking. I’ve heard a lot of things about Shani Davis, both positive and negative, so I half expected the interview to be Stephen poking and Shani sitting there in stone silence. But Shani opened up and laughed right along with Stephen, and was more than happy to play Stephen’s reindeer games. It really warmed my heart.

I know we’ve got a lot of Canucks who were at the shows last week. Can I get a holla! for you being off notice! The Cheer up Canada montage was wonderful and reminding me what these Olympic games are all aboot – camaraderie and beer.

What were your favorite parts about tonight’s show, and about the Vancouverage week? Let’s revel one last time in the wonderfulness that was Stephen in Vancouver.

Stephen Colbert takes Canada Off Notice

  • We are here in Vancouver at the ‘Colbert Report’ International Broadcast Center, which, as you can see, has a breathtaking view of NBC’s International Broadcast Center. Oh look, there’s Bob Costas of NBC! Hold on one second … Bob! Bob! BOB! BOB! BOB BOB BOB! BOB! BOB! BOB!
  • Get out your handkerchiefs, especially if you are allergic to victory.
  • I’ve told a lot of people that you’re going to win, so if you don’t, you’re going to make me look like a jerk.
  • We’re Americans! We put a man on the moon, you think we can’t put an I in Team? Just wedge one in there, maybe after the E, T-E-I-M. Teim! Like Keith!
  • When the Colbert Nation gave you that $300,000, that wasn’t a donation – we thought of that as an investment. Because the point I’m trying to make is I told those people they’d get their money back. With interest. So I’m just gonna … if anybody’s got any, any cash at all, there’s some very bad guys who want their money back. I’ll lay my cards out on the table, a lot of that money was mob juice money, and I am in huge trouble. They are humorless about this.
  • They don’t test for marker, do they?
  • Shani Davis – EVENT: Pretty Much All Of Them, DIAGNOSIS: Fear Of Jerks
  • Are you that good? Can you tell when your 18/100th of a second ahead?
  • Canadians are really nice. This is a country that went into the Olympics with the motto “Own The Podium”. But once the games began, they graciously fell behind in the medal count.
  • You know who you are, and what you did. So knock it off!
  • That feels right. Good luck getting this back.
  • Hey, grandpa! What was the Reagan administration like?

i was really looking forward to the michael buble national anthem part but i guess they ran out of time :(

I am really hoping they put together a montage of missing pieces that were taped and not shown this past week- similar to the clips from Stephen’s prep for Iraq [basic training, Tom Hanks, Thunderbirds, etc.] that they showed in a later segment.

Freud Rage was by far my favorite segment of the entire week. I love that he was able to show a different side of Davis that many don’t see. How fun it would be to play along with Stephen!

I think that putting the extra clips online, or showing it in a montage-type clip like what they did with the Operation Iraqi Stephen footage is a definite possibility. I really hope they do something like that – I want to see as much Vancouverage as possible! :D

Now I’m left trying to figure out how to get off of the On Notice Board! Sorry, Stephen – It won’t happen again. I promise!

I did love the slo-mo high-5 from the team. And Shani just doubled his fan base, I’m sure. What a sweetie.

Man, I can’t believe it all ended so quickly!

“You know who you are and what you did! So knock it off!” – I laughed so hard at that part! :P

What a great week of shows! The bit with Stephen and Bob Costas at the beginning of the show was really funny, but the Freud Rage segment was by far my favorite of the week! That pep talk last night had me laughing so hard! The part that topped it all off was the slow-motion high five – huge props to the US Speedskating team for playing along! And I never get sick of Tucker Fredrick’s facial expressions in reaction to the crazy things Stephen says, ha.

I’ve become a huge fan of Shani over the past few weeks. From the Shani vs. Stephen face off on ice, to his post interviews after winning Gold and Silver medals, to that awesome interview with Stephen last night, he really seems like a cool, laid back guy. Both he and Stephen have handled everything brilliantly, and I loved how Stephen asked Shani to call him a jerk again, lol. Here’s hoping that Al Michaels holds up his end of the deal.

I really liked the Seth Wescott interview as well, although I would have loved to see Stephen put on Wescott’s plaid snowboarding jacket. I still think it’s hilarious that Jane Fonda’s #2 on the On-Notice board. Definitely sad to see that the Vancouverage is over. Oh, how I will miss that navy Polo sweater! :]

  5. RobM says:

… But where was Michael Buble? :(

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • TJ says:

As much fun as that segment would be, that would mean something else would get cut. And I can’t think of anything cut-able; every segment has been really high-quality. Hopefully Buble will show up on colbertnation.com in a few days.

  6. cordgrass says:

Once again the man has hit a home run. Yay Olympics!

I’m going to miss the white pants!

  7. GabbyD says:

yeah, what happened to buble? they can put it in next week…

loved the shani davis interview. miracles do happen! that guy who said that it would be a miracle has been schooled in the power of colbert!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  8. PriyaNoblet says:

No Buble? No moose riding? No board signing [this is when I yelled at Stephen]? No pride house?

This entire weeks episodes have been fantastic, but d*** :( the missing pieces are kinda upsetting.

His speech to the speedskaters literally had me LMAO. I love that Tucker started laughing and Stephen got pissed. They’re hilarious together.

    • wren says:

Yeah, but think of TJ’s point – what could you possibly cut? Everything that was aired was so fantastic! And anyway, we can all be glad to have seen so much fun coverage on NFZ :) I bet CN will grace us with some outtakes now that the week’s shows have aired.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  9. wren says:

Wow, that week went by quick! But so much fun. I love Stephen’s thank you to US Speedskating at the end – none of this would have happened if they hadn’t trusted him, and by extension, the Nation. I’m happy they took a chance, and that we came through for them :)

Also, I think Tucker & Stephen should have a show. It doesn’t matter what they do, whenever they’re interacting, I laugh my butt off. What a riot.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • lockhart43 says:

“The Tucker and Stephen Show.” That just sounds right. :P
If they could do more segments with Tucker in the future, that would be absolutely fantastic. I love how they play off each other – every time Tucker’s been on, I’ve laughed hysterically.

  10. jentaps says:

As with the rest of this fantastic week, it was really hard to vote for a favorite segment. I went w/ Freud Rage. His interaction with the team was amazing, as was their response to him. So much hilariousness! And the Shani Davis interview went way beyond all my expectations. He was so cool and seemed so happy to be playing along. And then when Stephen got him to call him a jerk for old times’ sake – Bwah!

I did really enjoy Seth Wescott, too. Plus, he let Stephen wear his medal. How cool is that?

It was an outstanding week of shows, and we can only hope that Michael Buble shows up online, or on the air. I was really looking forward to that. Vancouverage, we’ll miss you!

Small thing that cracked me up all week: whatever they said after Verizon Wireless. Something new each day, and they were all funny. Oh, I know:

Verizon Wireless – Proud sponsors of the US Speedskating Team
Gee, I wonder where they got that idea? :-)

  11. Ann G. says:

Wow, I can’t believe the week is over already! So many highlights from every show, it’s hard to pick just one or two. But I loved every minute of Stephen’s interactions with the speedskaters. The interview with Shani Davis was a real highlight. It was wonderful to see him smiling and playing along with the humor.

Is it wrong that I’m still cracking up over Stephen poking Tucker Fredricks in the eye? I swear I’m not laughing at the actual poking, just Tucker’s reaction to it.

It’s surprising to realize how much footage from the Vancouver trip didn’t show up this week, so I’ll add my name to the list of people hoping that it shows up somewhere in the near future.

Stephen’s thank you to the U.S. speedskating team was beautiful. Thanks for trusting Stephen and the Colbert Nation enough to let all this goodness happen!

  12. nerdygirl says:

I too am sad that the Vancouverage is over now, but what a great week of shows. I just adored the interview with Shani Davis — it wasn’t long ago that he was calling Stephen a jerk and he appears now to be completely won over. Welcome to the Nation, Shani, you are now officially an It-Getter!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  13. Roseha says:

It was a great show, but my favorite part was the Shani Davis interview. I adore his smile, and I really love that this whole thing has turned out that he’s now connecting with Stephen and the Nation in a really sweet and fun way. I don’t think the media is fair to Shani- I was watching NBC Universal sports channel the morning after his gold medal and they barely acknowledged him – so I think his new found friendship with Stephen and the Nation is great for everyone.

Count me in as someone who hopes we will see extra Olympic coverage next week!

  14. juice says:

What a wonderful week! As much as I enjoyed the Seth Wescott interview, I had to vote for Freud Rage (great beard, btw!). Thanks, DB, for not making me choose between the marvelous interview with Shani Davis [I'm waiting, Al Michaels! ;)] and the team pep talk. How much fun was it to watch the team members try to keep straight faces during the speech?! Tucker Fredricks and Ryan Shimabukura were such hysterical foils for “Stephen.”

I am definitely going to need to see some Vancouverage clips that didn’t make it on the episodes, as I’m expecting some serious quadrennial athletic event let-down after tomorrow’s closing ceremonies. @jentaps – I got a kick out of the Verizon Wireless blurbs, too. :)

Ride the Moose! Ride the Moose!
