I really, really enjoyed this last night. Seeing him delight at learning more about his ancestors was absolutely wonderful. :)

I thought Kristi Yamaguchi’s ancestry was very interesting as well.

Did anyone else notice at the end that when Queen Noor sort of opened her arms up at the cemetery, Henry Gates stepped forward real quickly like he thought she was going for a hug, then suddenly stopped himself when he realized she wasn’t. Haha!

    I’m easily amused.

I like how Stephen instantaneously knew about the Draft Riots of 1863. Paul Dinello was right, he is like “a walking wall of encyclopedias that likes to drink beer” :)

I loved that too, how when Gates’ asked, Stephen instantly knew about the famine and the draft riots.

I really enjoyed that whole show. :)

I know! “July 11, 1863? Was that the draft riots?” I’m so impressed with people who can pull dates out of their heads because my brain so does not work that way and I wish it did! Always jealous of encyclopedic minds! Way to go, Stephen!

I loved it the most when he talked about his mother (so pretty in that picture, by the way). He just beamed!!! We know where he got his brightness from!

I mainly watched Stephen’s and Kristi Yamaguchi’s segments (she’s always been my favorite skater) – I am saving the rest for later – but it was wonderful. My family is also Irish Catholic and I was struck by things that I myself didn’t know, for instance that the poor Irish didn’t always want their names recorded while suffering under British rule. We went to Ireland to try to trace the home of my father’s mother a few years ago and we thought we found her home but we couldn’t find any relatives. It is hard, especially if the name is a common one. But it is an absolutely beautiful country. Of course rural Japan looks lovely too.
I wonder if there will be more with Stephen later on? There were clips online that weren’t on the show last night. I wonder if some of them were out-takes?
BTW I may be imagining this but really thought Michael Guerin had Stephen’s eyes.

It would be REALLY awesome if the DVD has extra footage, and lots of it, but the website doesn’t say. You can tell they talked for a long time because it goes from day to night outside! I want more!!!

I think it’s worth noting that Stephen does appear in more than just this episode, though perhaps not as much. I’ve watched both episodes aired so far and they’re wonderful, but I didn’t realize until I watched them that Stephen would be in other episodes as well since NFZ had been calling this “Stephen’s episode,” more or less.

    • lockhart43 says:

Yeah, I had a feeling that he would be in more of the episodes after watching the first one and getting a feel of what the layout of each episode would be. I think this one was just more focused on his ancestors when they first came over to America. But I’m positive they’ll show more clips of him in later episodes.

I am loving this series. It’s such a bonus that we get to see Stephen in it, but I have recently done a lot of research of my family’s roots. I love to see these people so fascinated with their lineage, because I went through the same thing about a year ago.

It’s also interesting to see how each of the people profiled on the show are connected to the other people in some way. I realized that too when I saw my family tree and just how many people I am related to. It may seem impossible to think that Yo-yo Ma can be related to Eva Longoria but it’s really not.
