Okay, when I originally read the headline stating that President Obama would love to do The Daily Show, but not The Colbert Report, I was ready to be annoyed. Then I read the reason why, and I started grinning maniacally.
Gibbs: Obama ‘Would Love To’ Do ‘Daily Show,’ But Not ‘Colbert’
Huffington Post | Danny Shea First Posted: 02-17-10 12:10 PM | Updated: 02-17-10 12:22 PMWhite House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs tells TIME that the President would be interested in appearing on “The Daily Show,” but not on its Comedy Central counterpart “Colbert Report.”
“I think the President would love to,” Gibbs said when asked if President Obama would appear on “The Daily Show.” “Just maybe not Colbert,” he said.
Gibbs explained his reasoning for avoiding Colbert: “I have yet to see a politician best Stephen Colbert in an interview on his show. I mean, he’s really, really good.”
. . .
Hee!

“I mean, he’s really, really good.” – How fantastic is that? I got a big smile on my face when I read this. When the President of the United States is afraid to go on Stephen’s show because Stephen’s such a great interviewer, that’s saying something. :D

I’d rather he “get” Bush before Obama. I understand the character will probably be um, “too much” for the current president, if they ever go head to head in an interview. But for an ex-pres (or vice?) Isn’t it time they come on the show and get their alpha dog lifetime awards in person?

And by “too much” I mean the character may not be able to give a “soft”, non aggressive interview, especially to this Democratic President whom other conservatives just flat out disagree with (where the character would be obligated to attack with his “colleagues”.) Stephen’s specialty is unveiling the hypocrisy after all, moreso than Stewart who can dial it down and let the President speak.
Maybe when Obama becomes an ex-president, he could come on and be ridiculed from the safety of being an “ex”
Speaker Nancy Pelosi should definitely be interviewed by Colbert ASAP though. If only to guarantee BKADs in rapid succession.

Haha! I love it! I’d be a little miffed by the initial headline as well, but as long as Obama thinks Stephen is that good, I’m fine with it! That’s hilarious. I’d love to see the President on The Daily Show, though – he’s already been there via satellite. Actually, to be fair, Obama was on The Colbert Report via satellite as well!

I was always kinda curious why high profile guests like the president (or TDS regulars like Brian Williams and John McCain) avoid TCR. I think it must be absolutely terrifying to be interviewed by someone in character.
And on top of that, like what one of my good friends always says, Stephen is incredibly fast on his feet, having come from an improv background. Not too many people know how to avoid getting pummeled by Stephen. One of the few people I remember that has been able to sorta outwit Stephen, if only for one line, was Fareed Zakaria. http://www.colbertnation.com/the-colbert-report-videos/180958/october-19-2005/fareed-zakaria

I think the real reason Barack Obama won’t appear on TCR is because he’s jealous:) Stephen “flirted” with his wife Michelle when she appeared on one of the Philadelphia shows and began singing “L-O-V-E” to her;)
