EPISODE NUMBER: 6019 (February 3, 2010)
GUESTS: Peter Cove, John Durant
SEGMENTS: Stephen Colbert’s Job Man Caravan
VIDEOS: Wednesday, February 3, 2010
I have to be honest with everyone. I’m seriously looking forward to the Olympics. I’m not looking forward to them only because I’m looking forward to the silliness that will ensue, but quite honestly I’m looking forward to the break from all the news about unemployment and the horrible economy and all of the serious subjects that Stephen has been taking on with aplomb. I mean, seriously, who takes an interview about unemployment and job losses and turns it into a 70′s hip cat television show, complete with theme song?!
And after Stephen woefully neglected the fabulous beard of Henry Allen last night, it was massive that Stephen mentioned Peter Cove’s glorious lip warmer right off the bat. Very interesting audience interaction tonight – those looked like actual audience members asking actual questions.
Stephen seemed to be having a lot of fun interviewing John Durant. It’s always fun to see the guest’s answers amuse Stephen as much as they amuse us.
What did all of you enjoy about the show tonight?

- Next thing you know, they’ll be giving out Purple Hearts for being fabulous under fire.
- Before you know it, they’ll be freebasing spinach.
- And if you add people who have jobs, but spend most of the day on Facebook, it’s up to the mid-90′s.
- That’s right, we’re in a man-cession. That is why I’m recommending that men start a full course of estrogen hormones. So even if you don’t get the job, you can breastfeed your self. Which reminds me, breastfeed Grammy. Also, a true story.
- How many people have you employed just to groom your mustache?
- You place ex-offenders in customer service? Is that why I can’t get my cable hooked up? I’m looking for a Grammy polisher, by the way.
- Should he make specific lies for every job that he wants to get?
- So you’ve used the computer? That’s great!
- And you should probably start nagging your friends to stop firing you.
- It’s not how fast you type, it’s how fast you hype – pepperpot!
- I understand you exercise by throwing stones around. You live in a New York apartment. I’m sure your neighbors are thrilled by this.
- Looking for single lactose intolerant to join me in cave.
I loved the interview–very interesting person!
I’m wondering whose random hand was on the desk during the job thing? I wish we had a taping report!

ask and ye shall receive Cordgrass. I was at the taping. Yes those were audience members. I was standing in line in front of one of the people that they called in for the segment. her friends explained that she had submitted the question and they liked her question, but then he didn’t go to her during the segment, but those were all real audience members. I haven’t seen the actual segment yet, but it ran kinda long so I would imagine they had to chop out some of it. Sherry, the woman who was going for the job interview, was really going for a job interview. I wish there was a way to know if she got the job or not.
During the break, Stephen asked her what she was interviewing for and she still said that it was a consulting firm. I think she was nervous and who can blame her. I would be a puddle of goo if Stephen was standing next to me trying to get me to make eye contact.
After Stephen went over to “Steve” they stopped taping and Stephen went out into the audience. They had a stand in at the desk who sat pretty much motionless, wearing the same suit, so it looked as if Stephen was still at his desk. I don’t know who it was, though, he didn’t look familiar to me.
BTW, I’m glenn beck over on the forum. I got to go to the show on my birthday!!

Awesome! Thank you for answering all my questions. :) No wonder the Q&A was so exciting–usually his audience Q&A things are more “staged” feeling.
I want him to do more of that segment!

I had a feeling that those were actual audience members, that’s awesome that they got to join in on the segment. Thanks for the report! And I’m with you – if Stephen was standing next to me trying to make eye contact, I wouldn’t know what to do with myself. Plus there’s that whole “I’m on national television right now” that doesn’t help matters any. ;)

Thanks for the taping report! I was also wondering who was at the desk while Stephen was out taking the audience questions. I loved that segment. I wonder if that girl really did get the job. It was too funny when Stephen was like, “if you see this girl come into an interview tomorrow, give her the job!” hahah.
I also loved the opening: “Jon Stewart went on the O’Reilly Factor tonight. I hope he brought me a toaster!”

I liked that the next-day job interviewee was absolutely determined not to give any hints about what consulting firm she was interviewing for, even under Stephen’s repeated questioning. She really proved she has the necessary discretion for the work. I hope she was successful.

I totally agree with you, DB – one of the reasons I’m so excited for the Olympics is so I can just enjoy all of the events without having to hear about how high unemployment is or where we’re at on health care reform. The fact that Stephen will be there, making me laugh hysterically along the way, is just an added bonus. A wonderful, wonderful bonus.
I loved the segment on DADT, but the Job Man Caravan was by far my favorite part of the episode. The funky graphics, Stephen’s ’70s ‘cool cat’ voice, and Peter Cove’s crazy mustache were all fantastic. The audience interaction was great, too – I love when he includes them in the segments. Also enjoyed the interview, if only for Stephen’s obvious enjoyment after hearing Durant’s answers to his questions. :]

I like that he’s got his eye on the economy, in particular job hunting. Especially his young demographic–it’s terrible out there! If he pretended it didn’t exist it would be weird. It makes me feel like we’re all in this together, if we can laugh about it.
The healthcare bill, OTOH, we have all heard enough about, at least for now.

Yeah, I just reread my ep guide from today and thought, dang, I was pissy this morning. Maybe I should have had a cup of coffee before doing the guide.
It also reminded me that I should probably take my Omega 3′s and cal/mag/zinc pills that I threw in my purse on the way out the door.

I’m actually in at least partial agreement with your initial assessment, DB – I wasn’t sure if there was a specific 70s show Stephen was riffing on, so I thought the bit was only mildly amusing.

Oh my goodness – the Job Man Caravan was so fun! The segment took on a pertinent issue (unemployment) but didn’t make it depressing. Peter Cove was great, I thought – especially the mustache, and I loved the audience questions! Seemed so natural! That last young girl though…man, how do you stand and make eye contact with Stephen that close?!

I agree- Job Man Caravan did put a fun spin on a totally depressing issue. I hope to see more interaction with the audience but, seriously- I don’t know how the girl at the end made it through!!! I wouldn’t be able to talk!
sidenote: I noticed (according to my DVR) Stephen is scheduled to be on Jimmy Fallon Monday night.

Yeah, the audience interaction was so much fun!! Oh man, I know, me too!
Wow, seriously? I wonder why it hasn’t been reported on here yet? Thanks for the heads-up!

We prioritize Colbert news – sometimes Jon news has to wait a bit. :)
That being said, I wish there was a sister site to us that was exclusively ‘Daily Show’. That would be nice, to have that resource, don’t you think?

I think my favorite part was the Bill Cosby-inspired voice for the Job segment. Always a plus when Stephen imitates Bill Cosby!

I must thank Stephen for telling us about Jon’s trip to the No Spin Zone. I just watched the segments and analysis on YouTube, and boy was that entertaining. And O’Really said something about having Jon back tomorrow (today). I wonder if he was serious? He does seem to have gotten more… I don’t know… sane? thoughtful? respectful to interviewees? whatever it is, I can’t tell exactly. Still won’t watch his show, but it’s certainly less painful to watch Jon’s interview this time around than the last one.
reCaptcha: Some wenches. How appropriate.

They taped the interview yesterday, but they’re airing it in two parts. The first was last night, part 2 is tonight. I actually forgot that part 2 was airing tonight until I just read your comment. Doh!

Hey, DB – luvtcr was talking about Stephen being on Jimmy Fallon, not Jon being on O’Reilly. But, I agree! A Daily Show site equivalent to this would be amazing.

Oh, and that bit about Jimmy Fallon? Blogging it now! :)
