Episode 6017 (2/1/2010)

Colbert Report Episode guideEPISODE NUMBER: 6017 (February 1, 2010)
GUESTS: Nicole Detling Miller, Jessica Smith, Harold Ford Jr.
SEGMENTS: The WØRD: Siren Song, Stephen Colbert’s Sport Report
VIDEOS: Monday, February 1, 2010

Hey, didja hear? STEPHEN COLBERT WON A GRAMMY! It’s fun to see him just beside himself with glee and merriment. But the accolades didn’t last long, as Stephen quickly jumped into The WØRD. The handcuffs cracked me up as Stephen struggled as much has he could to fight bipartisanship.

I also enjoyed the Sport Report segment. I cannot wait to see the damage “Stephen” will inflict upon the US Speedskating team with his “words” of “wisdom” during the Olympics. And the Harold Ford Jr. smackdown? Pure deliciousness. It was amazing to see Ford dance around what were obviously some very different answers to some very polarizing questions. To watch Ford squirm as Stephen continuously stayed on course and refused to take Ford’s flip-flopping reminded me of why Stephen has become famous for nailing his guests.

What did you enjoy about the episode? And WHOO HOO STEPHEN WON A GRAMMY!!! That never gets old

Stephen Colbert In Blue Olympic Jacket - February 1, 2010

  • All the stars were out, from Beyonce, to Pink to the love child of Tinkerbell and a linebacker for the Jets.
  • And once again, I won a Grammy. What’s that? You eat that right up! Daddy loves you so much! They grow up so fast.
  • So next year that Peace Prize is mine, and I don’t care who I have to kill to get it.
  • It is hard to explain to your base that you found common ground with Black Hitler.
  • True leaders stand on their principles, not their accomplishments. [World's Greatest Leader: Dennis Kucinich]
  • The danger is Obama might offer you something you can’t resist. [Chocolate-Covered Reagans?]
  • Homer what? Do we have his last name? You’re fired.
  • That is more painful than I thought it would be.
  • S is very hard to do.
  • I am so pumped to find out what an Assistant Sports Psychologist does.
  • Lovely Statue – Stephen – 2010 U.S. Olympic Speedskating Team Staff
  • I’m going to put these two in a room together and let them fight for my love.
  • A mental coach? You make them do, like, mental push-ups? Drop and give me 20 Contemplations?
  • Did you change from not pro-choice to pro-choice, was that your choice?
  • I don’t blame you for considering gay marriage when he’s [Matt Lauer] around.
  • President Obama? I’m not a fan of his either, and I’m glad that you’re distancing yourself from President Obama. And as a Democrat, are you willing to stand behind that statement?
  • Are there other places you designate as “helicopter only” because I would recommend that for Schenectady.

I voted for the speed-skaters. They were lovely and beautiful.

Harold Ford I trust as much as a I trust a Toyota now-a-days. Both of them have been lying and neither of them will fess up. I wanted harold for to say that he was just reciting dems lines.

Wooo Grammy! I loved the beginning of the Sport Report when after playing air guitar Stephen held that note just to show off his impressive singing skills. ;P

The reference to Lady Gaga as “the love child of Tinkerbell and a linebacker for the Jets” made me laugh so hard that I cried.

throughout the show, all i could think is, “jeez, he must be exhausted! did he fly a red-eye from LA?”

I had been looking forward to this episode ever since Stephen won his Grammy. I always love it when he proudly brings out a new award. I hope he mentions the Grammy as much as possible this week. Congratulations on the win, Team Colbert!

I liked the way Stephen handled the interview with Harold Ford, Jr. I do not trust that guy at all and was happy to see Stephen call him out and ask him to explain a few things. I thought it was especially interesting that Ford tried to make it sound like Senator Gillibrand is soft on LGBT equality issues. Apparently, we are supposed to overlook the fact that she has been pushing for DADT to be overturned and that she currently supports gay marriage.

Ford’s comments about Gillibrand bugged me, too. And I got so annoyed when Ford tried to insult Obama in order to make himself look better on the gay marriage issue, when he didn’t even answer the question of whether or not he flip-flopped. I really wish he would have answered Stephen’s questions instead of backing away and giving the empty answer.

Very nice of his fellow Olympic coaches to provide him with another award–it was very pretty. I think my favorite line was that he will make the awards “fight for his love!”

I wish I could have been in the audience to bask in the Grammy win glow! I bet it was fantastic. He looked very happy and proud- and not the least bit tired from coast to coast travel! Amazing!

While Harold Ford’s answers to the flip-flopping were totally unsatisfying, I have to give him credit for appearing on TCR though. I’m not sure I’d like him to get the colbert bump however. It’s funny how he changed from being totally nervous at the beginning to cracking a big smile at the end of the interview.

I hope Ford gets a Colbert DUMP, because I was so proud of the way Stephen continued to point out each of Ford’s discrepancies, no matter how truthy Ford’s responses seemed.
He still deserves Alpha Dog status.

Harold Ford is a very famous local politician, so there was a pretty big write up in the local paper today about Colbert’s smack down. What a great interview.

Woohoo! Grammy! When he pulled out the baby food and started feeding it I nearly rolled off the bed laughing.

*crosses fingers for a toss tonight*

I’m crossing my fingers too! Although, did you see the end of TDS last night? Jon said, “Stay tuned for the Grammy award-winning Colbert Report!” It was sweet. :)

Yeah, that got an “Awww” from me. :)

Sadly, no toss tonight either. Though Bri Wi was hilarious as usual.

I still think they’ll do one this week – after Stephen winning his Grammy, they can’t *not* do one.

Ohhh the Brian Williams interview was so great! I always love when he’s on TDS, and those pics of Jon and Brian were HI-larious!

Firstly: WOOOO Grammy!

Secondly, what a smackdown that Ford interview was. Is anyone as excited as I am to see the effects of the rare ~Inverse~ Colbert Bump? Because I’ve a feeling that’s what Junior will be seeing.

dude my Senator is not a young lady, that’s what you say when you scold a kid!
other than that I thought Harold Ford Jr was a pretty slick politician.

I kept thinking of Stephen being tired too. I stayed up late Sunday night only to get up early Monday, but I didn’t fly across the country and star in a TV show!

finally, the USA arm movements made me actually LOL.

Yes, Harold Ford Jr. reminded me once again exactly why I dislike politicians so much.

The Word was excellent! I really loved that!

I really liked most of the show last night. I thought that the alternate speedskater bit felt rushed (she only got one question), but I thought Harold Ford, Jr. got a well-deserved nailing.

I liked The WØRD most of all. The “95% White” line Bullet threw out there made me guffaw briefly, and I loved the Odyssey parallel; that just came out of nowhere. It actually reassured me somewhat, because I’ve felt that the show has gone with a lot more silly-funny jokes lately than the smart-and-silly-funny mix that seemed more characteristic of the earlier episodes in the series. I like silly-funny and it certainly makes me laugh, but I really, really like the smart-and-silly-funny mix. The random references to art and literature and whatnot really make the show for me. (Jane Austen and baseball! Shakespeare in our prisons! Philip Glass, just because!) Anyhow, I thought last night’s show felt more like some of the older ones to me, and I liked that.

Considering that Stephen flew back from LA Sunday night and made it in to put on a great show on Monday, I’m doubly impressed.

I’m thinking that because the interview with Jessica Smith ended up being so rushed, Stephen might have her back on or try to fit her into another Olympic segment. I’m really hoping that they do a segment where Stephen uses his mad Assistant Sports Psychologist skills on some of the athletes – I’m laughing now just thinking about it!

I still don’t know how he hasn’t passed out from sheer exhaustion with how busy he is. There’s never a day where I’m not impressed with how hard he works and how committed he is.

He didn’t mention the Grammy red carpet when he signed the back of Ellen’s staff member Andy Zenor’s leg. Several other stars signed an amazing Fender guitar to be auctioned off to benefit the Haiti relief efforts. The artists include Wyclef Jean, Alice Cooper, John Legend, Usher, Common, Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus. Unfortunately Stephen’s signature is not on the guitar but his name is still on Andy’s leg which he showed today on the 2/2 Ellen show.

Seeing Stephen feed his baby Grammy and talking to it was absurdly hilarious. Loved how he kept showing it off throughout the episode. :]

The funniest part of The Word was actually when he was handcuffing himself to his desk, and after hitting his wrist before it cuffed, he said, “that was more painful than I thought it would be.” I don’t know why, but it made me laugh really hard. The Sport Report was great, too. I absolutely cannot *wait* to see him at the Olympics!

Ford kept avoiding Stephen’s questions, and I felt like he spent the entire interview campaigning. Stephen definitely nailed him during the interview – he’s really become a masterful interviewer. On a final note: Stephen won a Grammy! WHOOO! :D

(mentally jumping up & down, singing) Stephen won a Grammy! Stephen won a Grammy!
My favorite part of the show was seeing all the ways Stephen and the writers played with Stephen’s Grammy. My absolute favorite part was how they worked the Grammy into the Siren song.
Ms. I, I agree: “smart – silly – funny” humor is so satisfying, and what TCR does best.

Harold Ford was very much in “politician mode.” Blech.

The whole show was great last night but I really liked him feeding his Grammy (LOL!) and that dashing blue Olympic jacket! :D

(Also loved that Jon said “stay tuned for the Grammy-winning Colbert Report next”)
