EPISODE NUMBER: 6015 (January 27, 2010)
GUESTS: Arthur Benjamin
SEGMENTS: The WØRD: Prece-Don’t
VIDEOS: Wednesday, January 27, 2010
I don’t know about you guys, but I don’t watch a lot of shows where they discuss the recent rulings of the Supreme Court. Or even read a lot of web sites that discuss these things. It blows me away how much I’ve learned about Supreme Court decisions by watching the ‘Colbert Report’. While I had heard about the decision about corporate sponsorship, I wasn’t aware of the precedent change with the ‘spirited discussion’ clause. I’m so grateful that Stephen brings these things to my attention, because I would think that they would be rather important, and at the same time, I never hear about them from my regular mainstream media news outlets. Also? Seriously funny. Loved the comment about “The English guy from the Daily Show?’ HA!
Stephen begging for things never ceases to amuse me. I hope he gets an iPad very soon. I think the reason why it amuses me so is that it reminds us that there’s a huge part of “Stephen” that is still very much a little boy, who wants shiny things, and gets flustered by pretty girls, and gets mad when he doesn’t get his way. It’s one of the most endearing qualities of “Stephen” and I hope it never goes away.
What did all of you enjoy about tonight’s episode?

- You inspire me with your incoherent grunting.
- This tie is genuine Armanji.
- I tell you what, folks, if that furgina he wears ever falls completely out of style he can always move to something a little more fashion forward. You know what I hear is hot? Concentric circles.
- I was the Rosa Parks of riding in the back of a corporate jet.
- Drowning, yes. Unless you have Life Savers. Life Savers – they’re great.
- It’s the same logic I use on my taxes. Time is money … time waits for no man … no man is an island … therefore, no man needs to know about my secret bank account in the Cayman Islands.
- I believe in America’s legal system except when it makes rulings I don’t like. [i.e. Restraining Orders]
- Who the hell is Oliver Wendell Holmes to tell me what is constitutional. Also, Who the hell is Oliver Wendall Holmes? [That English Guy On The Daily Show?]
- To recap: according to chief justice Roberts, any Supreme Court decision that was not unanimous is now in question. [That Question: What The F**K?!]
- Folks, that is not a doctored photograph.
- Yes, by all means, you need to find the context. I mean, what do we really know about this story? Just the nebulous detail that four people were caught entering Federal property under false pretenses to gain access to the phone line of a United States senator, and that O’Keefe, the ringleader, confessed to the scheme.
- Think about it – prisons are just a government program to hand out free room a board to known criminals.
- Can you really have sex with math? Is this like a kama sutra with all the positions you can add in?
- I feel like I’m at a children’s party.
- I was not born on a Wednesday, because I’m a happy person.
- I don’t know Jack about math, I’m loaded, why cant I just hire you to add for me.
- Let’s get into the some deep math. What is the loneliest number? [One] I would have also accepted two, because two can be as bad as one, but the loneliest number is the number one.
- Six might be liberal – I don’t like the way it’s looking at 9.
I was really enjoying tonight’s ep until Arthur Benjaman came out. He reminded me of how much I missed doing mathemagics in High School instead of doing actual maths work. Something I would never admit in the real world, I rather like not being crammed inside a locker.
I especially loved the random dig at John Oliver in “The Word”. I hope Stephen does get an iPad, it will give him another place to draw Snoopy. They look like oodles of fun, though we wont be getting them in Australia for a long long time, unfortunately.

I loved the Arthur Benjamin segment! He was so adorably eccentric, and you just know that no other show would have him on. I googled “1964 calendar” and “May” and sure enough Stephen’s birthday was a Wednesday!
I hope to see Stephen with an Ipad too. DB I love your summary of the ways “Stephen” resembles a little boy.

OMG! Arthur Benjamin! I first saw him on Amazing Discoveries promoting his Mathemagics tapes in one of the random shopping channels years ago. He had those cool demonstrations on multiplying with 11, squares of the numbers 90-99…it didn’t click for me until I heard him start speaking in the interview. I love his genuine enthusiasm and passion for numbers, very evident in this interview. Awesome.

When Stephen asked Arthur Benjamin his favorite number and he answered with an unexpectedly large, seemingly random number, Stephen’s reaction was priceless. It was as if Stephen was thinking “Wow, there were nerdier kids than I out there.” Haha!

Haha! Totally agree with you. You could tell how much he was enjoying that interview – I love nerdy Stephen. :]

I can’t decide what I love more, that Stephen had Arthur Benjamin as a guest or that the Zoners here are so excited about Arthur Benjamin being a guest.
It’s nice to know there are still people out there who get excited about the elegance of math.

Poor Stephen being full of woe. I looked up the poem and I guess I have a long long way to go. ‘Stephen’ was kind of a jerk to the poor guy but I could tell that the real Stephen found it fascinating. Mainly, I loved how much passion he has for math and numbers. It’s important to have a passion for something no matter what it is.

Stephen shouldn’t be worried about being born on a Wednesday. As someone I follow on Twitter wrote in their bio, “Wednesday’s child is full of whoa!” ;-D

I loved the interview–but I had to vote for the word. I always regretted not taking math in college, but it cost more money to take classes like that so I had to put it on the back-burner. The only math I had in college was a stats class, which I loved tons (I actually did the work assigned outside of class).

I thought The Word was fantastic last night; I was waiting for Stephen to chime in on the SC’s decision. Those shameless plus were too funny! I loved how much the audience cheered when Stephen mentioned another campaign in 2012. :P
Arthur Benjamin was so great! I just loved how excited and alive he was during the whole interview – it was like he was so passionate about mathemagics that he just couldn’t contain himself any longer. And Stephen seemed like he was enjoying the interview so much that his own personality was peeking through, it was lovely.
I can definitely see Apple giving Stephen an iPad. Seeing him continuously beg for one is just hilarious. :]
