EPISODE NUMBER: 6014 (January 26, 2010)
GUESTS: Paul Begala, Mika Brzezinski
SEGMENTS: Tip of the Hat/Wag of the Finger
VIDEOS: Tuesday, January 26, 2010
My mind boggles that somehow, with majorities in both the house and Senate, that the Democrats feel like they can’t get things passed. I don’t understand what the problem is. I thought that Paul Begala echoed what a lot of the Democratic punditry has been saying that seems to be getting louder and louder – just grow a pair and attack!
Stephen’s little character breaks during the Tip/Wag segment, and accompanying surrender to the baby with the gun, was simply adorkable. The iPhone Scare Bear app is actually kind of fun, and according to creator Alexander Tiger, it was absolutely made to be an homage to Colbert and his fear of bears. If you want to see the Scare Bear app in action, check out this YouTube video.
I really liked the little Conan mention at the end and hope that the C-desk goes for a huge chunk of change. It’s already almost up to more than the interview desk, $11,000. What did all of you enjoy about last night’s show?

- You’ll notice that no one in that audience booed.
- I’m sure he wouldn’t mind taking the poor to a farm upstate where they could be happy and chase rabbits.
- What’s so unchristian about implying that the poor need to be neutered?
- “If you want to be perfect, go sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come follow me … we’re going to wait till the poor fall asleep & then cut off their balls” – Matthew 19:21″
- Plus naked guys wearing wings … kinda gay.
- Yes, my calculator agrees, 41 is bigger than 59. And this is the calculator I use to do my taxes with.
- John Boehner? His fist is going to come back kind of orangy.
- This analogy is getting complex, but go ahead.
- Baby is packing two loads.
- You can’t fail a background check if you don’t have a background yet.
- I believe that an American’s second amendment rights start in the first trimester. You can have my embryo’s gun when you pry it from his tiny, developing arm buds. Plus, it would cut down on the cost of Cesareans.
- So for the best results put the ear buds on the bear. Carefully.
- Before we go, I want to say something and I want to say it in all sincerity. I want an iTablet. Give it to me.
- Who were you trying to be, and who are you now? It’s okay to cry.
- I’m suddenly the monster because I want you barefoot and pregnant?
- As a matter of fact, just so I wouldn’t be intimidated by how pretty you are, this whole time, I’ve been picturing your father instead of you.
- Suck it, Clooney. Suck it for charity.
- It’s the perfect gift if you know someone whose name starts with C, is in need of a talk show desk, and just came into a bunch of money.
I will always love Tip of the Hat/Wag of the Finger for the tiny character breaks. I loved when Stephen surrendered to the baby with the rifle, that was so funny! His ad-lib about arming a fetus to cut down on C-sections was hilarious, too.
For some reason I didn’t really care for Brzezinski last night – she seems nice enough, I just felt like she kept repeating herself. Stephen was great during the interview though, so he made up for it. He was in a great mood last night, and he sure looked nice! Loved the hair and the tie. :]
That is fantastic that the C-desk is already going for $11,000! Keep it up, Nation! :D

For some reason, I had the impression that Brzezinski was really afraid of Stephen during the interview… perhaps it was the first time she had actually met him. She seemed a little too careful, possibly with the full knowledge that Colbert has several years of experience in improv and can flip things on you in a second.

I think Joe being there with her had something to do with that.

Voted for the C-desk auction for the awesome Conan O’Brien shout-out.

I know TDS slammed that SC douchebag, but I was still feeling unsatisfied. Last night’s definitive killing was just what I was needing.

For some reason, Stephen saying he wanted to say something “in all sincerity” and then calmly demanding an iTablet (“Give it to me.”) made me laugh so hard. Just so cute :).

I laugh so hard when he gets all grabby hands about things. And I love that he’s a Mac fanboy, too.

Agreed! My favorite part of the episode last night. I am sure if he doesn’t get one right away, he will stoop to crying/groveling!

I was able to attend the taping of the show (my 3rd experience as a member of the Colbert audience) last night so I just thought I’d give you a few details behind the scenes.
First of all, there were a lot of people from other countries there last night and the Colbert staff gave them the special white tickets which I think means that they get to briefly meet with him after the show. I think that’s pretty cool of them if you’re coming all that way to see the show.
Stephen’s college roommate was in the audience and Stephen had no idea until he was scanning the audience during the Q and A. He looked so surprised and happy, it was really cute. When he announced this to the audience he said with the biggest smile, “we got high!”
Apparently, Stephen wrote a song like 25 years ago that was never published or anything and a girl from the audience asked him, “is it better to broil or better to fry?” which were lyrics and he was shocked that she knew about the song and seemed like he wanted to inquire further but he turned it into a joke and said, “security, she’s sitting in the third row…” but he did mention that the song wasn’t anywhere on the internet and I have spent all morning looking. He went on to sing the song and the lyrics were really funny but I, for the life of me, cannot remember them. They turned into something about weed.
The new stage looks great and the audience seats are so much better. Before, most of the seats were blocked by the camera so you really couldn’t see Stephen even though he was 5 feet away. They made them much higher so almost no one gets blocked. I do miss the eagle’s nest and the outline on the floor where he broke his wrist though.

There’s a version of that song on the Best of Second City – Volume 1 recording. That’s also got a version of the Maya Angelou sketch (although if Stephen is in it, I didn’t recognize his voice). Steve Carell, and Paul and Amy are on the recording as well.

Is that the same song that has the lines “What the hell is that thing on your face?” and “Why do we live, why do we die?” blah blah blah blah, “Who is that guy?” Something about answering the questions we already know? I’ve only heard it once, but that’s the tune that popped into my head when I read “Is it better to broil or better to fry?”
If that’s not it, what am I thinking of?

Yeah! That’s the song!

Oh, and thanks so much for the taping report! I love to hear the Q&A questions and learn more about the show. I’ve only been once myself, so I have to live vicariously through those of you close enough to be able to go more often.

Thanks for the inside info!! I love all of it – the college roommate and the fact that people from other countries might get to meet him (so nice!), but I might know who that girl is…who asked the question. :P

Haha! That’s okay, I’m pretty sure of who it is. :P
Well…did she have a lot of hair? And glasses?

I loved the Bear Iphone App with the “hand-clapping” – just what we need – and I also loved the second nightly shoutout to Conan. I bet we will be seeing/hearing a lot more of those!
I also loved Stephen asking for and I-tablet. Let’s see if Steve Jobs sends him one!

I can’t believe no one’s brought up the ‘Word Failure’ toss yet after he mentioned Zbigniew Brzezinski!

i can tell you why we all weren’t really feeling the guest. as soon as stephen sat down he called her young lady, and she gave him a bit of a dirty look. didnt matter what came after, interview was already a bit soured for me. :P

Like others, I wasn’t so keen on Mika Brzezinski’s interview. What I found annoying was when Stephen asked her (paraphrased) why she had to “have it all” — being the best at her job and the best mother instead of doing one thing, and Ms. Brzezinski could only respond that she wanted to, it was “who she was.” Her answer smacked of overt pride and “but I want” entitlement. Lots of people would like to be great at their job, a good parent and everything else at once, but life doesn’t usually work that way. The guest sounded less like someone speaking of the problems of working mothers than an individual who was concerned with her own sense of success and surprised(!) at how difficult it could be. Not insightful.
