EPISODE NUMBER: 6012 (January 21, 2010)
GUESTS: John Farmer
SEGMENTS: The WØRD: Two-Faced, Threatdown!
VIDEOS: Thursday, January 21, 2010
Oh, tonight was so very full. It was full of laughs, and brilliant satire, and one of those delicious rants that we all love so very, very much.
For those of you watching the Own A Piece of Histor-Me auction, the bidding is up to $8,100! If you’re a member of Colbert Platinum, get bidding now!
First, we learned about the T-Ban Crew and their “rebranding” attempt. The WØRD was wonderful and addressed an issue I haven’t seen too much in the news, which is the fact that Fox news is both calling Obama both incompetent and making so much change as to be changing the face of America forever. And I cannot tell you how much I adore rants. One of the first episodes I watched that caught my eye was a rant he did about baseball. I don’t remember exactly what it was, but he kept switching back and forth between the monitors and it made me laugh hysterically. He’s just so amazing when he ramps the emotion up to eleven.
As for the rock, paper scissors comment at the beginning of the interview – I got an interesting e-mail from Zoner Chanelle last night, who was in the audience. Here’s the explanation of that little interaction:
This is now my third time at a taping, and as a fan of Stephen (who was blessed enough to get sung to on her 21st birthday) I found i had nothing to really ask him during [the pre-show] Q&A.
To kill time in the line, my friend and I played rock, paper scissors. I decided my question would be “rock, paper, scissors, best 2 out of 3″. We cut it down for a round, (I lost) and the person who got called on next said “will you reference this in your show, beating a fan?” and he said no.
Right before the interview, Stephen says “rock, paper, scissors”… and needless to say, everyone in the audience died in delight, myself in particular.
So what did all of you enjoy this episode? And how friggin’ great was this week? (Then again, being a ‘Colbert Report’ fan means never having to say “God, this week sucked”.)

- That’s right, the Taliban has acquired brand management. This madman has hired Mad Men.
- God help us if the Taliban introduce a friendly mascot, like Tali!, the happy untrimmed beard. He puts the “Fun” in Fundamentalist. Also the Mental.
- We must continue to bring the fight to terrorist organizations like the Taliban, or as they’re now known, the T. Ban Crew.
- A bead?! Really, Brad? I just hope you’re researching a role as a douchebag.
- He’s been in office a year and hasn’t cleared a single piece of brush. [Lieberman Filibustered the Chainsaw]
- I’ve said it before – he’s Adolf Carter.
- I am an an Absolutist. [i.e. Drinks A Lot Of Vodka]
- It’s like the mirror universe episode in “Star Trek” where Good Kirk dithers over how to save the alien race and Evil Kirk tries to sell them cut-rate hotel rooms on Priceline.
- Because either there are two completely different Barack Obamas, or, in his first year in office, during this time of unprecedented national crisis, we Conservative pundits are attacking our President no matter what he does or doesn’t do. And that would make us assh*les.
- Well maybe now I’ll stop getting nasty looks in the security line when I shove the elderly out of my way.
- What about Metamucil? That clearly has explosive capabilities. And if you think the underwear bomber was terrifying, just imagine the Depends bomber.
- And just look at their ranks – Webelo? That clearly stands for Webelo up things!
- Did you know in Chinese the character for Love is the same one for Terror? You could look it up, but don’t.
Anyone find it odd that Colbert won’t be at the telethon with Jon? Perhaps Colbert is flying out for Conan’s last show? Its been said that Carell is supposed to be a surprise guest.

I was hoping Jon and Stephen would go out to Conan’s show and invite him back to NYC!

That would be so great if Jon and Stephen showed up as surprise guests on Conan’s last show! Did anyone catch TDS last night? Jon did a Leno-themed Moment of Zen clip and before they showed it, Jon shouted, “Team Conan!” :D

Oh my goodness – how awesome would that be if they came to see Conan for his last show?!?

Big fan of Stephen’s rants as well! I do love it when he gets close to totally losing control! :) I have missed The Threatdown. Great episode last night.

I love the rants!

The satire was spot-on last night! I really loved The Word, because Stephen managed to take subtle jabs in a satirical way, but still get his point across in the end. Really gotta hand it to Stephen and the writers for that. :]
It was so great to see a new ThreatDown! I laughed at the threat about old people, and then again when he almost broke character after the Depends comment. Loved the rant as well! I don’t know why, but fake-emotional or fake-crying Stephen always makes me laugh. And his “You could look it up, but don’t” comment about the Chinese character for love totally reminded me of one of my fave lines from Strangers With Candy, which is “Think about it, I haven’t.” :P
Thanks to Chanelle for the insight on the rock, paper, scissors bit! I love audience jokes even more when I know the meaning behind them, lol. And that was such a cute story!

Oooh I love love love “Think about it, I haven’t” as well! It was also in Wigfield, and he used it in his WHCD speech. Has it ever been used on the Report? Anyway I love that line so much, I was almost thinking of asking him who originally wrote it (between him, Amy, and Paul) and why he’s used it three times or something like that, the next time I go to a taping.

I can’t even think about that line without laughing! I had forgotten that he used it in the WHCD speech, thanks for reminding me. It’s completely appropriate for the concept of truthiness, so it makes sense that he said it at WHCD. And I’m not sure if he’s used it on the show. If he hasn’t, he needs to :). I’m pretty sure I would squeal if I heard him say it, lol.

The Word was brilliant and the Kirk thing had me laughing out loud, but I had to go for the Threatdown.

I loved the whole metaphor of the two different Obamas but Stephen did make a mistake in which Star Trek episode he used as an example.
It was more accurate to use the example of the 5th episode “The Enemy Within” where a transporter accident splits Kirk into a well intentioned but indecisive half and a selfish and brutal half that took whatever he wanted. The two halves had to be reunited to function effective just like Obama has to.
The “Mirror, Mirror” episode was more famous but each of those Kirk was whole and acted appropriately for the society they were in so it lacked focus to the point Stephen was making.

This is the nerdiest correction I’ve seen since the “Lord Of The Rings” one mentioned in the Conan interview a few years back.
Today, my friend, you are my hero.

More nerdy than the explanation of Stephen shout of “Jon Stewart Delenda Est!” during the toss arguing about Superbowl roman numerals?
I guess it is all relative since there are a lot more trekkies than history buffs.
I’m sure I’m not the only one to notice that mistake, but just the one that took the effort to post a correction.
But I guess it was worth the effort to be a hero wasn’t it? That one of the things that makes Argon noble *wink*

That riotously absurd “Adolf Carter” comment had me rolling… it’s why I love watching Colbert. It’s one of those head-smacking, face-palming moments of epiphany where the real world and the fake news we find illustrated before us each night do more than blur, but veritably change places.

Oh the word last night was fantastic!! I loved everything about it. Once it ended, I couldn’t help but say “Bravo Stephen” outloud… my brother made fun of me. HAHA

haha my friend did the same thing! After the show, I said, “Wow, Stephen is just…wow,” and he laughed and said I needed to get out more.
