EPISODE NUMBER: 6009 (January 18, 2010)
GUESTS: Dr. Margaret Palmer, Emily Pilloton
SEGMENTS:Own A Piece of Histor-Me: A Colbert Nation Liquidation
VIDEOS: Monday, January 18, 2010
What a bubbly show tonight! I absolutely love the nights where Stephen lets those smiles escape all night long. Also, Stephen’s hair was looking particularly full and shiny tonight.
Can I just give serious props to whatever writer came up with the Dig Dug reference? I am so a child of the 80′s and I played many, many hours of that game. Stephen’s childlike glee at the images of mountaintop explosions was just adorkable. I thought the guest was very informative, but was also highly amused at how the last 45 seconds or so of the interview involved her just giggling uncontrollably.
We reported on the Histor-Me auction last week, and it’s excellent that Stephen has found yet another way to reach out to those in need, this time to the people in Haiti who so desperately need assistance. It’s a very lucky person who manages to get their hands on a piece of the old set and donate money to Haiti in the process. And an autograph with it? Yes, a very, very lucky person who gets to actually possess a piece of Colbert Nation history.
I found the interview with Emily Pilloton very interesting. I think the inventions that she brought really helped to show some of the innovations that Project H Designs are creating. Also, when I saw Stephen walking across the stage, while I’m sure he made it across fine, I thought, It’s too early to have to make another tape outline on the floor of the new studio! Please don’t fall!
What did all of you enjoy most about the show tonight?

- This is the kind of national election I love – the kind that gets decided by one state, just like the national referendum on Lincoln, NE on whether to install a left turn past Arby’s on Cornhusker Hwy.
- That’s why their former governor was the guy who comes with the picture frame.
- Electing Scott Brown will send a clear message to the nation – “I got mine, jack. You can suck it.” Hopefully after he waxes it.
- Thankfully modern science has found a much safer way to get our coal – BLOWING THE TOPS OFF MOUNTAINS! AWESOME! OH DADDY!
- Who made the EPA the protector of the environment?
- Faster Jay! Do you want that college credit or not.
- Ha ha ha! Hillbillies are poor.
- It’s called a flounder. A mountain flounder.
- Folks, tonight is Bonus Eve. The night before many bankers get their multi-million dollar bonuses if they made their clients money. Otherwise, they get nothing. Just kidding – they still get multibillion dollar bonuses.
- I am so moved by their gesture of cost-benefit analyzed generosity that I am proud to inaugurate a special honor, the Humanitary-ish award for outstanding achievement in the field of considering whether to give to charity as long as there’s something in it for me.
- I just want to see if the announcement that I am considering giving an award gets me any good press.
- A lot of people have asked me what happened to the old set. Well, we’ve set it to a farm upstate where it can run and play and it’s much happier now. We shot it.
- What’s wrong with designing stuff? I have great stuff.
- I feel like Dr. Percy Dovetonsils.
- And when I get back to my village and I’m wearing one of these, will any woman mate with me?
Taping repor(t)!!! I scribbled most of this frantically into a notebook as I waited for the bus last night so I wouldn’t forget anything.
This was my fourth time going to the Report, and my first time seeing the HD set in person. I got to the studio around 3:15 and ended up being #11 in line. I’d signed up for my ticket yesterday morning, and it’s a good thing I had my e-mail confirmation with me because they didn’t have my name on the list. I guess they print them in the morning or something – I’d reserved my spot around 12ish.
They let us into the holding area sometime between 5 and 5:30, and we stayed there for however long it takes for the “Best of The Colbert Report” DVD to get to the middle of the Barry Manilow segment. I noticed that when the audience coordinator talked to us, she didn’t say anything about the size of the studio, like they used to before the HD conversion. (No wonder the holding area seemed more crowded than normal!)
When you go into the HD studio, you go to your seat from the right-hand side of the studio, giving you a great view of the interview area as you enter. I noticed that a lot of the elements from the old set – the Rock’em Sock’em Robots, the Fiction/Non-Fiction bookshelves, and the infamous Fox News microwave – are still there, but you can’t see them as well on TV. I think a few people have already mentioned that the bike path and the wrist outline are gone, but so is Stephen, Jr.’s nest! :(
I was on the end of the aisle about 3 or 4 rows up in the left center section, next to a woman who was in town from Wisconsin to visit her son and who is possibly even a bigger fangirl than I am! Pete Dominic made fun of her son during the warmup, as well as a girl in the front row who was wearing Ugg clogs (“Those are slippers!” he said.)
Stephen took a lot more questions than I’d seen him do in the past. There are two that stick out in my mind the most, though. The first was from a girl who wanted to know what hair products he uses. He didn’t know offhand, but he explained that he needed a lot of product because “my fontanelle (sp?) never quite finished hardening”. Then he invited the girl to touch his hair!!! (So jealous!!!!!) Later, when the makeup and hair ladies were working on him before the show, he got the girl’s attention and read off whatever was on the label of the hairspray they were using (I couldn’t really hear him, but it was a big red bottle with the letters “CHI” on the side of it, if that helps.)
The other question I remember was about that twirly dance move he does and where he picked it up from. Stephen said that the guy who played Principal Blackmon on SwC taught it to him. And apparently, Principal Blackmon was in some group with Rerun from What’s Happening back in the day, but I forget what the name of the group was.
During the first part of the show, Stephen kept cracking up just after the clips about the Massachussetts election. It took 4 takes before he got it – that’s why you hear a ridiculous amount of cheering after that joke.
Stephen did a lot of lip-synching and dancing behind the desk during the breaks – always so much fun to watch! They’ve started playing tracks from the Movits album during the breaks as well, and the stage manager was encouraging us to clap along with “Fel Del av Gården” (kinda hard to sing along, though, if you don’t speak Swedish.)
As Stephen made his way over to the interview table in those landmine shoes, all I could think was “Oh, God, please don’t let him fall! I don’t want an AnkleStrong bracelet!” And then the Irish in me wanted to yell at him for putting his shoe on the table, but I restrained myself. The end of the interview had to be re-shot because Stephen didn’t realize that Emily’s book was going to be on screen and not on the table.
At the end of the show, Stephen came around to shake hands with audience members. I practically pushed the lady from Wisconsin out to the end of the aisle so she could get in on the action. And karma turned out to be a wonderful thing, because I got to shake hands with him too! Squeeee!!!!
I waited after the show with a few other girls, including the “slipper girl” from Pete Dominic’s routine. After a while, one of the guards came out and told us it might be a while because of editing, and even then, Stephen might not be able to stay. I was kinda half-prepared for this since every other time I’ve been there and waited, he’s been in a rush. When he did come out, about 20 or so minutes after the guard talked to us, it looked like he was just going to take off, but it turned out he was just putting his stuff down in the car so he could come over and shake hands with the 5 of us who were waiting! Double squeeeeee!!!! I’m pretty sure I floated back to the Port Authority. :)

great recap! It’s making me excited about being able to go in March. Thanks for the tip about the email confirmation BTW.
Being from MA, I was interested in the segment about the election. The suck it line was great!
Great show overall and I love the screen cap, I figured that would be the one.

Hey! I was one of the girls who waited outside with you last night! I was wondering if you recognized any of the other songs that were played during the breaks, since I see you picked up on the Movits song! I am desperately trying to figure out the song before it!

Hi there! Wasn’t that awesome?!? :-D
The other Movits song was “Äppelknyckarjazz,” the title track off their album. Youtube has the music video for it, along with the other one (which I’m not going to type out again because it took me forever to find the special characters!) As for the other ones, the only one I really knew was “Ruby Soho” by Rancid, which I think they played as they were seating people this time. I know there were others that they always play, but I’m not as familiar with those. Sorry I couldn’t be much help! :-/

Hey, I was also there and was waiting for him outside with you! I was the one who asked the question about the twirl. When I knew about Greg dancing with Shabadoo, he asked me how I knew that, and when I told him I’d heard it on a DVD commentary, he said, “Oh, you’re one of THOSE people!” I gladly confirmed that, yes, I am one of THOSE people :). Your taping report is awesome, and I did the exact same thing, scribbling down every single detail I could remember later that night. I liked how before the second interview he indicated to Emily Pilloton that he really liked her rainbow socks, and I liked how after he added the line about waxing, director Jim did one of those “yesssss” gestures with his elbow :). The other questions were about marriage advice from someone who had been proposed to in front of his portrait, something about the Rain rivalry, something about what he thought of Tahoe, and what he thought of republicans who took him seriously. I had so much fun, and I’m still sooooo excited!! Back to real life, though, oh well.

You wouldn’t mind posting the answers to those other questions, would you? I could also very well be one of those people too. :D

Well, he didn’t really have any marriage advice for the lady, but asked her to point out her husband (he was sitting behind her), and he told the guy “Well done,” or something like that, and said something like “Uh, marriage is good.” I don’t know what the exact question about Rain was, but he talked about how he was in awe watching Rain work, because it was essentially watching someone who had been groomed and trained his entire life to do exactly what he’s doing, like a professional athlete. He also explained that in Korean Rain is known as “Bee” and his followers are clouds (whatever the Korean word for clouds is). The Tahoe question didn’t really get much of an answer, and I don’t remember any of it. Regarding republicans who take him seriously, he said he thought it was great, and tried to explain how twisted it was that some people have an easier time believing that he’s REALLY a conservative PLAYING a liberal who is playing a conservative. I think that was it, along with the other two questions mentioned above.
Glad to hear you may be one of THOSE people as well :).

Oh, I am definitely one of THOSE people! I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve heard the audio commentary on the SWC episodes and the movie. ;)
Love the answer he gave to the “republicans who take him seriously” question.

I could be wrong (and someone correct me if I am), but don’t they also usually play “Holland, 1945″ by Neutral Milk Hotel during the breaks or before the show? It’s a great song. Here’s a link if it sounds like it was from the taping: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sCjpbjCH5L0

Aw. How sweet that he came back to shake your hand after putting his things in the car? Did you have a chance for much of a conversation?

Thanks for such a massive report! That is so sweet that he came back to shake your hand!
Wasn’t it the Yardstick Boys that Hollimon used to be a part of, with Paul Dinello? It could have been another one, though, that Rerun was a part of, I’m not sure. And I cannot tell you how much I love that a girl asked him a question about his hair! He’s adorable.

**My vote today went for the babershop sing along since I did participate. Great show overall.

I love how he was looking at his feet like it was so normal to be wearing those landmine shoes.
Great interview. I want those glasses, because I’ve been wearing glasses since I was in preschool and it’s really expensive to go to check ups and to be replacing them every few years.

Great report; it’s also great to hear that with the inclusion of the HD set that the staff and crew have adapted to running the show in an equally more detailed way.
I enjoyed the interview with Miss Pilloton the most. I prefer his interviews with more common-folk over politicians or celebrities because when they talk about a cause you can genuinely tell they speak from the heart. Sure, it’s a promotional stop, but they would do it a hundred more times if it helps the crises they aim to solve.

Just a few thoughts on a great Monday show:
Last night, I was distracted during the opening of the show until I heard, “I have a dream” in that yummy little way and had to immediately rewind and focus. Love it when Stephen gets all flirty!
I think Dr. Palmer was quite taken with Stephen and his logic–don’t know why she tried to get away at the end there! I like how he reached for her to make her stay.
I briefly thought one of the humanitarian-ish designs might be Snoopy-but the crystal dollar sign filled with babies’ tears was good. Fake tears paired with a stone-faced “We shot it.” made me lol. I love brutal honesty!
It is always fun to watch Stephen explore and learn! He was quite entertaining during the final interview playing with the glasses. And he looked adorkable in them!

Oh! Thanks for reminding me of Stephen’s flirty moment at the beginning of the show! I vote for that;)

I won’t lie to you. I squealed after his “I have a dream” comment. And then I said out loud, “I have a dream, too, Stephen.” Haha! :P

So… I wasn’t really able to pay attention last night, cause I have a tendency to just stare at his adorable mannerisms once my fangirl switch is turned on. And that sexy “I have a dream” comment in the intro just happened to be the factor to flp that switch! Gosh, i was giggling all night. So many smiles :) loved last nights episode, but my favorite was probably the Humanitary-ish award. hahaha
Great report! :)

My favorite part of the evening was Stephen reading the list of some of the guests he’s interviewed at that table, including “Eliot Spitzer — pre-whore!” Hee hee!

LOL! I missed that! Oh that’s funny!
I grew up in WV so the hillbilly reference had me in stitches! Plus, the segment drew attention to the horrid practice of mountaintop removal mining. I also really enjoyed the interview with Pilloton. Very interesting stuff!

The Suck It line (and what came after) was definitely the line of the night, and it would’ve put the Mass. election over the top in securing my vote. But I had to put it down for Pilloton, namely because the gizmos she brought were freakin’ cool and have great applications.
Oh, and I thought the landmine shoes looked like chicken feet.

What a great episode last night! Stephen looked GREAT (Loving the hair! I really think it’s grown back fuller after the shave), and he was in such a great mood, which always makes for a fantastic show. That ad-libbed waxing joke about Scott Brown after he said, “I got mine Jack, you can suck it.” had me laughing so hard!
Every segment of last night’s show was wonderful – I loved the interview with Dr. Palmer, they both seemed to be having a lot of fun, and I loved how excited Stephen got at all of the ideas he was coming up with. :] And oh, how I wish I had piles of money just lying around – I would definitely bid on those old set pieces. I love that AT&T is matching the winning bid.
The interview with Emily Pilloton was really one of the most enjoyable ones I’ve ever seen. I was so happy he didn’t fall wearing those spider boots! And the glasses…so ridiculous and aDORKable. Usually my favorite interviews are the ones where you can tell Stephen is really enjoying the guest, and last night was definitely one of those. What a great show. :D

Stephen’s hair WAS looking particularly fabulous last night. And the glasses were cute. I didn’t know who Dr Percy Dovetonsils was (so thanks DB for the link). I thought he looked more like Sherman, or maybe even Mr Peabody.
My vote is equally divided between the two guests. They were both very interesting and informative.

The “Histor-me” fund raiser auction was first reported pre-Haitian earthquake and listed the James W. Colbert Endowment, US Speedskating and the Yellow Ribbon Fund as the recipients of the funds that would be raised. I was so pleased to see that Stephen chose to switch one of the auctions to go to the rescue operation in Haiti, and that he got ATT to match whatever he raised. I wonder if Stephen’s praise of the iPhone during the Pilloton interview was entirely coincidental ;-). Sorry that the Speedskaters will get a little less, but I noticed during the first interview with Sebelius that Stephen made a sarcastic remark about the importance of donating to Speedskating vs the Haitian relief effort, and while I certainly enjoy his support of Team USA in the Olympics, I was glad to see where his priorities lie when push comes to shove.

“Electing Scott Brown will send a clear message to the nation – “I got mine, jack. You can suck it.” Hopefully after he waxes it.”
heh. That was my fave line. Yay Mass, we really showed the nation…. boo. I had no idea that Scott Brown posed nude for Cosmo and that was one of those moments when watching TCR when I stopped and was like, “Wait. Is this a joke and a photoshopped photo, or is this for real?” Sure enough.. lol. Too funny.
