Road trip: UVA media students visit The Colbert Report

Now this is one field trip that I would’ve loved to take! A group of media studies majors from the University of Virginia traveled up to New York City to visit various media outlets, network with UVA alumni, and check out some career options. One of their stops was the Report, not just to attend a taping, but to meet with and talk to Stephen for an hour.

Up Close with Colbert

Stephen Colbert with students and faculty from the University of Virginia Media Studies Department

. . .

We had a mountain of questions for out-of-character-Stephen and he proved to be an extremely articulate, analytical person. He emphasized that he was a comedian first, but his years of political satire have clearly given him a firm understanding on how the mass media works and the role his jokes play in it. He compared his media ripple effects to improvisation. When he says something the public, politicians, journalists, and television personalities react to it. Then, he plays off the reactions and a story builds up around the exchange. It seems that the whole world is playing one large improv game with Mr. Colbert!

. . .

During the Q&A time with Stephen students asked him about his journey from actor to writer to comedian. He described the philosophy of his show in comparison to his old gig on The Daily Show. While The Daily Show aims to point out hypocrisy and inconsistency, The Colbert Report tries to mimic it.

These are some lucky, lucky students. You can also check out their taping report from January 11th (apparently some of the guys from MOVITS! were in the audience that night), and highlights from the rest of their stay in NYC.

OMG…I would’ve loved to have been one of those students. I have to say, Stephen always impresses me more and more with every new report of him. I love reading these “out-of-character” meetings. Thanks for the post!

This is so cool! I always enjoy out-of-character interviews with Stephen, and it’s great that he took time out to talk to the UVA media students. I love how whenever people interview him they always comment on how smart and well-spoken he is, so it’s wonderful that they call him “an extremely articulate, analytical person.”

That’s a cute picture, too. I never get tired of seeing him in a fleece pullover. :]

Seriously, what a wonderful gift to students–the gift of time! I don’t know what I would do with an hour to talk with Stephen. What a great experience for them–and nice that Stephen is married to an alum! :) Sounds like the students were able to visit some great people and places while in NYC.

Sidenote: he looks so cute and casual in the picture.

Oh, my. This looks so amazing! Why do I have the sudden urge to transfer to UVA and study in the media arts? Wow. I agree with the above comments – he looks so casual and cute in those pics – that looks like the pullover from the Second City panel! :P Great report, gotta love some out-of-character Stephen. :)

That’s great that you got to go! If they were touring in Michigan, I would totally make the trip to go see them; they’d be great to see in concert!
