TO DONATE TO HAITIAN RELIEF EFFORTS:

To donate money to the Red Cross, text “Haiti” to 90999

Good news for all you Hulu fans: the Hulu version of the “Colbert Report” is now broadcasting in HD widescreen! For those of you who get the iTunes version of the show, do you know if those are HD 16:9 yet or still standard def 4:3?

One of the things that makes Stephen so relevant in this period in our nation’s history is that there seem to be very few outlets that continue to shine a light into the dark corners of our country’s existence. When it appeared that the nation was forgetting we were still at war, Stephen went to Iraq. When the nation forgot about supporting our Olympic athletes, Stephen helped raise over $300K for our US Speedskating team. And with so many people out of work, and in underwater mortgages, Stephen continues to show that there still are many people affected and that the people responsible should be held accountable. It was a most excellent WØRD, in a story that I haven’t seen much of in the mainstream media.

I also enjoyed the segments with Sec. Kathleen Sebelius. The situation in Haiti is more heartbreaking by the moment, and our thoughts and prayers are definitely with those people. I also hope that health care reform gets passed quickly. I was uninsured for about 4 months last year due to layoffs and job switches, and I gotta say, the public option was looking mighty nice. I hope that the bill passes and people who desperately need help will be able to find their way to affordable and safe treatment.

What was your favorite part of the show tonight?

Stephen Colbert - January 14, 2010

  • Thank you trained seal.
  • I’ve always said Washington DC was a city of lies. For example, did you know that the Air and Space Museum is actually full of things?
  • For all we know, folks, that cauliflower was from Kenya!
  • Watching plants grow would certainly be more interesting than what they [C-Span] have on now.
  • What’s wrong with good old American produce, like tomatoes and funnels? That’s what funnel cake is made of.
  • Wow, I do a pretty good Stephen Colbert.
  • Financial Crisis Inquiry Commision – Whatever They Did: Not Good & How Did This Happen? Somehow.
  • He wasn’t trying to be funny … every 5 to 7 years … 1 in 10 Americans is unemployed and having to choose between rent and food … and that’s what we know about, the number’s probably closer to 20%. Oh, it’s funny because it’s true.
  • This is about your word, and you need to ask yourself, What am I worth as a person? [$200 An Hour, No Kissing]
  • YOU get a vaccine! And YOU get a vaccine! And YOU get a vaccine!
  • They can’t get this done without you being there, so thank you for being here so they can’t get it done.
  • I guess what I’m trying to say is what could you say right now to destroy the health care negotiations. … By the way, how do you like my De Niro?

i have to sat it was very good of stephen to put aside a couple of minutes to talk about the seriousness of the situation in Haiti.
i really liked todays show, very informative.
    loved the fake laugh

    • Michele says:

Yes, Stephen’s fake laughing is almost as funny as his fake crying. :-)

I really loved The Word! That was excellent! I also really appreciated his taking a few minutes to discuss Haiti. That is a truly devastating and sad situation. We should all do whatever we can to help.

I appreciated his setting aside a few minutes to discuss Haiti as well. Rarely have I seen him set aside his character for an entire segment, but very appropro in this case.

TCR is so flexible in design and voice that it allows for the funny to be hilarious and the serious to be sincere. I like how the tone can change from act to act but it never feels out of place. What other show could discuss: Iron Chef, the Housing Crisis, Haiti, and Health Care Reform?! It all comes down to a wonderful production staff, writers and incredibly talented host! Well Done TCR!!!

  3. cordgrass says:

The Word was incredibly subversive! Brava!

  4. lockhart43 says:

I loved the ridiculousness of the White House/Iron Chef America bit. The Word was really great, too, especially since we haven’t heard much in-depth commentary about underwater mortgages lately. Mostly you just hear complaints about the bank bail-out and then they’re done. Stephen really cut into it all last night, and it was fantastic.

I donated to MercyCorps right after the show ended last night. It’s great that Stephen took some time to talk to Sebelius about the devastation in Haiti. Putting those links on the Colbert Nation website is a great idea too, since I felt more comfortable donating to organizations I know will put the money directly towards the relief effort.

By the way, Stephen’s De Niro impression is terrible. And hilarious. It’s terribly hilarious, lol, it had me cracking up when I heard it. :P

I actually thought he was doing Edward G. Robinson at first. Ha!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

      • Ann G. says:

I’m pretty sure he WAS doing Edward G. Robinson. That’s why it was so funny that he called it his DeNiro impression. Though in the interest of full disclosure I have to admit that my only exposure to what Edward G. Robinson sounds like has been through Bugs Bunny cartoons.

        • lockhart43 says:

If you’re a fan at all of Humphrey Bogart, there’s a great movie he did called Key Largo with Edward G. Robinson playing the baddie, just in case you wanted to expand your Robinson exposure, lol. :)

      • wren says:

See, I thought he was doing a bad Jimmy Cagney. Ha!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

      • lockhart43 says:

It DID sound like an Edward G. Robinson impression! I loved that he called it his DeNiro, lol. Still, his Bill Cosby impression tops all others, ha!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

        • ColbertGirl27 says:

Ooohh…Key Largo is a good one. I just love the setting. I can feel the humidity!

  5. lockhart43 says:

Oh I forgot to mention: THREE character breaks this week?! In a row? We’re spoiled, and I love it. Loved his “thank you trained seal” comment as well, ha. :]

  6. I hope Haiti will receive the same love and outpouring of help we received in the Philippines last September during Typhoons Ketsana and Parma, if not more. Light, peace, love and prayers for them.

  7. cordgrass says:

Oh, and speaking of yams, I’m pleased to say that Stephen is longer orange on my computer monitor. Not sure what they fixed, but he looks his usual handsome self.

    • lockhart43 says:

I was going to ask you about that – I noticed last night that they finally leveled out the colors. Good, I’m glad!

And is it just me, or is the connection speed on the TDS/TCR sites better after all the clips were upgraded to HD? I’ve had much better luck watching video clips on both websites without buffering every 15 seconds, and I LOVE IT. :)

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

      • Erika says:

I’ve noticed the same thing, except sometimes the clips will go fuzzy, and then even more fuzzy, and then back to clear, at least without the constant buffering. I’d rather the picture not be clear than have it stopping and starting!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

        • lockhart43 says:

Yeah, the clips get a little blurred/fuzzy on my computer, too, to work with the buffer. But the fact that it’s running so smoothly is quite possibly the greatest thing ever. :)

  8. mrtigger001 says:

Is anybody else having trouble w/ getting fullscreen mode for the video clips on the TDS/TCR websites? I hope this is just a temporary maintenance thing…

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  9. mrtigger001 says:

Slight correction, DB. The TCR clips on Hulu are now widescreen, but there is a noticeable difference in quality between Hulu’s and the TCR website. Definitely not HD on Hulu.

  10. Karenatasha says:

Loved, loved, loved THE WORD, and greatly appreciated his dedicating a few minutes to the terrible crisis in Haiti. (Although, personally, I wish he–or rather, Kathleen Sebelius–had not chosen the Red Cross to single out on air. It is not one of the better charities to contribute to for Haiti. Partners in Health, Doctors Without Borders, and Wyclef Jean’s Yele Haiti are all better.)

And I also cracked up at the trained seal comment, too.

    Great show.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  11. MaryLovesColbert says:

The WORD was absolutely a-maz-ing and I thought it was really nice that he took a minute to be serious and talk about helping the people in Haiti. :)

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  12. Roseha says:

It was a great WORD, and I loved that Stephen devoted a whole segment to be serious and encourage donations for Haiti. I am so impressed with his efforts to help people in need.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  13. Richard says:

Did no one notice that Sebilius misspoke and said Haiti was the poorest country in the “southern hemisphere”? Haiti is not in the southern hemisphere, but it is the poorest nation in the Western hemisphere. I hope it was just a simple mistake and she knows where Haiti actually is.
