Weekend Brunch – Happy New Year 2010 Edition
By
Welcome to our (mostly) weekly discussion group to talk about Stephen, our lives, our friendships with each other, and pretty much anything you’d like to talk about with other readers of No Fact Zone, what we here affectionately call “the Zoners”.
Happy ‘010, Zoners! I hope everyone had a delightful New Year celebration, and a wonderful day of breaking all of your new year’s resolutions. I’m feeling pretty good about life, as I think I’m finally out of computer limbo. As a late Christmas present, my husband bought me a shiny new 21.5″ iMac. I’ve been wanting a new computer for a while, and we actually walked into the store planning on getting a new Dell. I just couldn’t bring myself to do it, however. I was dreading the move of all of my stuff onto a Windows 7 machine, and nervous that some of my old programs, like Photoshop 7, wouldn’t work with the new operating system. But a Mac just made sense. It had a beautiful high-def screen (I may not be able to get Comedy Central HD, but at least I can watch the HD version of the show on Hulu and my new monitor), it had fast processors, and most importantly, it was simple. I’m tired of Windows updates every few days. Plus, let’s face it, the computer is sexy as hell. The only reservation I had is that I didn’t want to have to buy another version of Photoshop. The salesman, however, said that I could install a fresh copy of Windows XP onto something called a Bootcamp partition and it would run Windows, and I could install Photoshop there. So I was sold.
Unfortunately, almost as soon as I opened my big white box, I discovered a problem. My computer had the dreaded jaundiced screen problem. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to box it up and deal with the return issue until Saturday. I spent the better part of yesterday opening boxes at Micro Center and sitting with the monitors with the lovely guys in the Apple Center. We finally found a monitor that was acceptable, and because it was the demo, they gave me a bit of a refund. I promptly used the refund to get a copy of Windows XP Service Pack 3 so that I could run Bootcamp windows installer and install my old, but trusty, copy of Photoshop.
With the discovery of the Seashore graphics program which is super simple for screencaps (and free!), I am 100% ready to blog. The first order of business was to take the freshly installed version of Photoshop and make a shiny new header for the site. I really like making shiny new graphics for the site – I need to do that more often.
I’ve got one more day of a relaxing weekend, and then it’s back to the grindstone for me. As for New Year’s resolutions, the only one I’ve decided to start was the John P. Health Challenge. It seems simple enough. Now all I have to do is get to the store to get some actual healthy food, and get right on that! I invite you to join me in the challenge, and I’ll post my results in my Weekend Brunches.
My big activity for today is a bit more Rest and Relaxation, courtesy of the King Spa and Sauna. Soaking in an herbal spa, then sweating it out in a solid gold sauna, with a lunch of tasty Korean food and maybe catching a movie in the theater, is a little slice of heaven.
So it’s been a few weeks, and we’re gearing up for the ‘Colbert Report’ in HD. Let’s do a little catch up before we get back to the very serious business of being the best Colbert fans on the web. How was your Christmas/New Years? Did you get any exciting gifts? Did you have any exciting adventures? Are you as excited for the show to come back as I am? Do you have any encouraging words for me as a new Mac user? Do you just want to share something with the Zoners? Get yourself a cup of coffee and chat with us!
And to start off the new year right, here’s a lovely piece of eye candy.

EDIT:
One more fun thing for today – Zoner Forsakinghalfloves set up a map for all the Zoners to log in, to show where you all live. Make sure to sign in, and let’s see how far and wide we go!

The new header is amazing!!! And I’m so jealous that you got a Mac. I’m not gonna lie, you are absolutely right about Macs being sexy computers.
I can’t wait for new episodes in HD! It doesn’t even matter that they’re in HD, I just want my nightly Stephen fix back. And I can’t wait to see his new set as well!
Enjoy your spa visit! =D

I have a Macbook Pro. It has taken time to get used to it, but I absolutely love it. The new header is beautiful. Great job.
We had a small Christmas gathering, but my little ones are now starting to know Santa, so that made it fun for me to watch them get excited about it. This year was scaled back, but next year I plan to go all-out again.
Just been trying to rest this past weekend. Have a lot of work projects on deck this month, and am trying to free up my time a bit for some traveling we will be doing later in the year. So, lots to look forward to, but a lot of work too!
By the way, happy new year to all the Zoners.

You’re gonna love that iMac. I’ve never owned any other kind of computer. The PC I use at work is, in comparison, boring and clunky. Although it is possible that I hate it simply because it’s my work computer. I’ll have to check out that Seashore graphics thingy, not that I’ve ever been able to figure out anything more complicated than cropping a picture.
I had a quiet Christmas and an even quieter New Year (except for the fireworks at midnight). I enjoyed the break from scheduled TV watching the past two weeks, but I’m more than ready for TCR to resume, and I’m very curious about the new set. I can’t wait to see it!

OOoOOO…I love Macintosh. PCs are good, but media is best experienced with a Mac.
My x-mas and New Years was a good one. I actually got an awesome gift; my friend bought me the Tek Jansen comics in hardcover! It is HILARIOUS!!!! I have not laughed this hard since reading I Am America (And So Can You!).

Your friend got you the Tek Jansen comics for Christmas? That’s awesome! What an it-getter you have for a friend. :D

LOVE the new header DB, it looks fantastic! And that Eye Candy is lovely. :D
I got some great Christmas gifts, but my faves by far would be the I Am America (And So Can You!) tote bag my friend got me from Barnes and Noble – I’ve been carrying it everywhere since I got it. And my brother got me two David Sedaris books I didn’t have (Barrel Fever and Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim) and David Javerbaum’s What To Expect When You’re Expected! I can’t wait to start reading them, as I just finished an AJ Jacobs book. Then for New Year’s, I had a nice night-in with friends playing Apples to Apples. :)
I’m making myself broke (okay, I’m already broke, I’m just going to continue to be broke, but this time on purpose) for the next few months because I have decided that I am going to New York City sometime this summer to go sightseeing with my brother and more importantly, go to a taping of TDS and TCR! I’m already excited – NYC along with a U2 concert in June is going to make this summer fan-freaking-tastic.
Excited for new TDS and TCR tomorrow! Looking forward to the new set! Happy New Year Zoners! It’s going to be a good year. :)

I love Apples to Apples! I played over the holidays as well. I admire your willingness to be more broke than usual and may join you in your efforts. Good luck!

Thank you! I wish I could fast-forward through this next semester of school and be in NYC already…if things work out like the plan in my head, I will meet Stephen (rather than just talk to him) and shake his hand and tell him thank you. Without fainting. Like I said, that’s the plan in my head, anyway, ha. :)

I am going to a David Sedaris show on January 15. I’m really looking forward to it, but don’t quite know what to expect. So far, I have only read his most recent book, “When You Are Engulfed in Flames”. (Excellent). I think he would be an interesting guest on TCR.

Oh lucky you! I would *love* to see him do a reading live. Where are you going to see him? If you love “When You Are Engulfed In Flames,” you’ll pretty much love all of his books. “Naked” is a great one, too.
I’ve heard that David loves to just talk with people, especially at readings, because he gets the most random stories. So you might get the chance to chat with him. Hope you have fun! :)

Seeing David live was one of the best things I’ve ever experienced. He’s incredibly funny, and you won’t read him the same afterward…it’ll be ten times better because you’ll just hear his voice narrating it for you. It’s beautiful.
He usually does a book-signing afterward, and I highly encourage you to wait in line to meet him. He’s nice and really just wants to talk to everybody. He gives out too–one kid got $20 and I got a condom. GOOD TIMES!
Have fun! I know you will!

I’ve read almost all his books but “Flames” was I think his best. Every story was provoking and funny. I love the fact that he and Amy are siblings. They definitely make up the Talent Family, as they like to be called.
January 4th, 2010 at 1:03 am
Wow! His live show/reading sounds great. Thanks for the info.
I’m seeing him in Brisbane. He seems to be doing a whirlwind tour of Australia. Four major cities in four nights. Poor fellow will be exhausted.
January 4th, 2010 at 7:40 am
I’ve been to a live reading of his before and it was great! And he stayed after to sign books and he really does seem to start up a little conversation with each person he gives an autograph too. I waited in line for two hours to meet him and it was well worth it! :)

I hope everyone had a great New Years, Merry Christmas, and nice holiday!
I, too, have to say how much I love the new banner! My Christmas was nice and was spent with family. I got an iPod Touch which I am madly in love with. I also got a Blackberry. Ideally I would have liked the iPhone, but I don’t want to pay the high monthly bill since my parents have Sprint not AT&T, so I couldn’t get a decent deal with a family plan for the iPhone. Sad. But I love the iPod Touch and Blackberry, so I don’t mind carrying both of them around.
But I’m really excited about the return of the shows! It’s been far too long.
You’re really gonna love that Mac! I have a Macbook and it’s so great. It’s amazing how much cleaner and organized everything looks.

I love the header! It’s so full of eye candy awesome.
*As for Christmas, I got yo-yos and the Thorn Birds and other a card with Stephen on it and other stuff.
*New Year’s was a time for the Twilight Zone, discovering a MJ song that I now *love*, and playing card games with the fam.
*Also I just discovered that my brother’s going to the taping tomorrow. I don’t know if I should be happy or really jealous. I’m leaning towards the second option.
* I love that eye candy so much.

I know this is late, but what MJ song did you discover? I’m a huge fan. I love For All Time, which isn’t a terribly popular one, I know.
Just curious. :)

Eh… it’s not that late. Anywho, the song is ‘Threatened’ from the album ‘Invinciable’, I think. Which admittely I only discovered becuase I learned that Rod Serling had bits in it. Still it’s really good.
Now I feel sorry that I don’t know ‘For All Time’.

Invincible is my favourite MJ album! In fact, the title track is one of my favourite songs, bar none.
For All Time was a special track on the Thriller 25 album (25th anniversary re-tool and re-issue). Can’t really get it anywhere else (well, probably on YouTube!). You should totally check it out! ^_^

I am checking it out as I type this, and I can say right now. This is awesome! Thanks for the rec.
January 3rd, 2010 at 6:35 pm
Yay New Year! I had a nice time with family and friends. I mentioned in a previous post that my family wrapped the Sports Illustrated w/Stephen for me and placed it under the tree!
DB-Good luck with the Health Challenge. I am going to be rededicating myself to better eating and more exercise. I feel better when I do it [but I also loves me some greasy burgers and fries!]and it always helps to know what other programs people are trying to find a good fit.
I am very interested in seeing the new set and how it is introduced to the audience tomorrow. The commercials with Jon and Stephen have had me chuckling- especially Stephen in the 3-D glasses and Jon explaining it is HD and not 3-D.
One last note: Did anyone receive or purchase good books they would like to recommend? I have a Barnes and Noble card waiting to be used and I value the opinions of my fellow Zoners! (I have read most of the books by Daily Show writers, IAAASCY, Wigfield, David Sedaris, etc.) I find we are very well read! :) Thanks!

Wait a second here…commercials with Jon and Stephen? How am I missing these?!
As far as book recommendations, what David Sedaris books have you read? I love everything of his, but When You Are Engulfed In Flames is my favorite. Also, I just got done reading The Know-It-All by A.J. Jacobs (he was on TCR for his new book The Guinea Pig Diaries which I want to read), and I thought it was really great. It’s about his quest to read the entire Enclyclopaedia Brittanica. Also, if you haven’t read I Know This Much Is True by Wally Lamb, it’s my favorite book…all 900 pages of it, lol. Enjoy! :D

The commercials are cute. We saw them while watching “Ghostbusters” the other night.
I have read “Me Talk Pretty One Day” and “Holidays on Ice” by Sedaris but nothing by AJ Jacobs. I think his books may be a good start! Thanks!

I finally saw one of Stephen last night, after seeing a few with just Jon. And you’re right – it was definitely a cute promo commercial :)
You’re welcome! I think you’ll enjoy Jacobs – he has another book called The Year of Living Biblically where he tries to follow all the rules of the Bible, which I do plan on reading. They stuck a quote by Jon Stewart on the cover of The Know-It-All; I figure if it’s got Jon’s approval, it might be worth checking out LOL.
I saw in a post below that you read a book by Sarah Vowell. Did you like it? I’ve wanted to read her ever since I saw her on TDS – she was fantastic. I know I’m supposed to be giving you the recommendations lol, so I thought of another one. I read In My Hands by Irene Opdyke in a Holocaust History and Lit class I took last semester and I thought it was excellent. It’s a nonfiction about a woman who helped rescue Jews during the Holocaust. And The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho is always a classic.
January 4th, 2010 at 10:11 pm
Her books are great and if you’ve heard her on “This American Life” w/ Ira Glass on NPR (or is it PRI? I don’t really know the difference!) you may enjoy the audiobook for “The Partly Cloudy Patriot” It has a wide array celebrity voices including Stephen (as Al Gore) and Conan O’Brien. I checked it out of our library to play during a road trip.

Awesome, I’ll definitely have to check out one of her books, thanks!
Y’know, I never have time to listen to “This American Life,” and I really wish that I did. For one, I know that David Sedaris is a regular contributor, and I know it’d be a great way for me to hear so many different styles of stories.
Stephen as Al Gore? I L-O-V-E when Stephen does voiceover work (I love his reading of “The Lie” and Wigfield the most), so that audiobook already sounds fantastic!

What types of books do you usually enjoy? Successful recommendations rely so heavily on what you like and what you’re in the mood for at any given point. I have read the books you mention above, but I usually read novels and whatever catches my eye during the Daily Show/Colbert Report interviews. I just spent the vast majority of my December gorging on books and old movies (and, hilariously, whomping my relatives at Texas Hold ‘Em), so I’m happy to weigh in if you’ll point me in any particular direction.

I will read most anything. I love humor, thrillers, pop culture and history. I recently read “The Devil in the White City” about Chicago, The World’s Fair, and a serial killer at the turn of the century and “The Wordy Shipmates” by Sarah Vowell. I, too, am usually intrigued by TDS/TCR guests but tend to forget titles &/or authors when I get to the bookstore (I should watch with a pen and paper close by!) If there is anything you have read recently that you really enjoyed I would be happy to check it out! I really do enjoy reading and learning just about anything. Thanks! :)

Hmmm, well it still depends very much on your mood, but here are a few things I’ve read or re-read lately and enjoyed:
For history-related stuff, I really liked The Lost City of Z, by David Grann. He was one of the most boring TCR guests last year, IMO, but the book was excellent. I’d also recommend Jon Krakauer’s Where Men Win Glory (on Pat Tillman), which was simultaneously infuriating and incredibly thought-provoking; Daniel Ellsberg’s Secrets (his memoir on how he went from administion insider to leaking the Pentagon Papers) was similarly heart attack-inducing and thrilling. I suppose while I’m on the subject of military or policy-related history, I should mention The Candy Bombers again; I really enjoyed that one (by Andrei Cherny, about the Berlin Airlift). And just in general for the non-fiction stuff, I thought William Kamkwamba’s The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind was a delight (about the boy from Malawi who built a windmill to power his family’s farm); the big payoff part when he was at the TED Global conference was heartwarming. And since you liked The Wordy Shipmates, I’d recommend Assassination Vacation, which I think is hilarious.
On the fiction side of things, I read Barbara Kingsolver’s The Lacuna last month, which was an interesting and imaginative tale about a boy who grew up in Mexico and mixed paint/plaster for Diego Rivera’s frescos, was a confidante of Frida Kahlo’s and befriended Leon Trotsky while he was a guest in the Rivera-Kahlo home. It was an absorbing story, although I think The Poisonwood Bible remains my favorite of her novels (to be fair, that’s one of my favorite novels, period, so that’s not to diss The Lacuna). I also re-read a number of Jasper Fforde books (really a blast if you’ve read a lot of “classics” and like totally unorthodox mixtures of literature, satire and slightly twisted pop culture references), as he has a new book out and I was thinking of his older stuff when I saw it at the bookstore. Same goes for Elizabeth Kostova, who has a new book out next week; I re-read The Historian because I’m looking forward to her upcoming book tour. If you’ve read Bram Stoker’s Dracula, then Kostova’s story about Vlad the Impaler and his legacy is a cracking good read. (It’s probably good fun even if you haven’t read the Stoker, but I appreciated the structural echoes, with the multiple narrators, etc., that I would have missed if I hadn’t read the Stoker.)
Since this is already getting insanely long, I’ll stop, but … you get the picture. :)
January 4th, 2010 at 10:15 pm
Thanks for the great recommendations! I really appreciate it! So many options- I love it! :)

You’re welcome — let me know if you like them!
By the way, when I got home last night, I remembered that I also enjoyed reading The Dangerous World of Butterflies, by Peter Laufer. He was on TDS last year, too.
I read a bunch of more “literary” novels last month, too, so if you’re interested, The Magus (by John Fowles), The Emperor’s Childern (by Claire Messud), 2666 (by Roberto Bolaño) and Bridge of Sighs (by Richard Russo) were all quite good. I didn’t mention them in the last comment because it was getting too long, as I said, but also because … well, all of them were highly critically acclaimed, and I understand why. That said, I’m still of two minds as to just how well I liked them. Open-ended narratives and complex, not necessarily sympathetic characters are sort of a hallmark of a lot of critically acclaimed novels, but it’s definitely a matter of personal taste to figure out whether they’re what you might be looking for as a story, if that makes sense. Anyhow, I thought they were all impressive, but it’s a bit more of a question whether they’ll suit your taste (I thought 2666, in particular, was pretty experimental).

Happy New Year, all! Love the new header, it’s scandalously funny :)
Christmas was pretty low key, but fun. We visited family in Charlotte, NC – lots of downtime with all the kids, and a night out at the movies (a rarity for us) to see Pirate Radio (such fun!).
As requested back in August, my special Christmas present this year is a March visit to NYC for a TCR taping!!!!!!!! It has to be March 15-18, so I suppose that means I should start checking for tickets soon? (Tiger, are you still keeping watch for tickets as they open up? Is 11am still the best time to check?)
I hope people keep adding themselves to the map – I enjoy seeing where everyone is from.

Hi! Sorry, I don’t comment here much, but I read it semi-obsessively :). I agree– awesome banner and beautiful eye candy! My Christmas was not terribly exciting, but it was good to see family (and have someone else cook for me, hehe). By far the most fabulous and amazing thing going on is that I have tickets to a taping! My first one! I’m soooo excited!! I’m going on Martin Luther King Day with a friend, to whom I will be forever indebted for waiting around in the freezing cold with me all that time.

I went in the middle of January last year and it is cold standing around outside. Since it looks like they don’t give that front row, in front of the desk seat to the first person in line anymore I wouldn’t bother getting there too early. Have fun! Tapings are a blast!

Reply

I’m not sure. Both times I went we got there between 2 and 2:30 because we wanted a good seat but it looks like order of arrival doesn’t make any difference anymore. I can’t remember what time it says to be there by on the tickets but I would think you would want to be there by 4pm at the latest. Maybe someone who has been more recently will have a better idea of a good time to show up.
January 4th, 2010 at 6:50 pm
Yeah, I was thinking between 3 and 3:30. I don’t want to freeze to death or make my friend freeze to death. And I’ll stock up on those pocket handwarmers that you shake :)
January 4th, 2010 at 7:10 pm
That time frame should be fine. Dress warmly and there is a Dunkin Donuts around the corner where you and your friend can take turns getting hot drinks. Have fun!

Congrats on your new Mac, DB! I love my little MacBook – wish they had Macs in my school district.
The new header is spectacular, and the Christmas header was dee-lightful.
I looked into John P. Health Challenge. I’m thinking about joining it, but I have food-related issues (on the order of needing a magazine rack, if you get my drift), so I’m not sure whether it’s the best food plan for me.
As much as I hate the thought of going back to school tomorrow, I can’t wait for new TCR & TDS episodes!
