MONTCLAIR — The Parents’ Association of The Montclair Kimberley Academy invites residents to join them on Friday, Jan. 29, 2010 for a star-filled evening of entertainment and education, when celebrated astrophysicist and director of the Hayden Planetarium Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson is interviewed live on stage by Stephen Colbert.

This event, which is open to the public and free of charge, is part of PAMKA’s Academy Forum series.

. . .

This event will take place in The Montclair Kimberley Academy Middle School Auditorium, 201 Valley Road, Montclair, (enter via the Brunswick Road parking lot). Doors open at 7 p.m. for advance book sales; the event will start at 7:30 p.m. and will be followed by a book signing by Tyson. Please note that seating is limited, but there will be a video feed provided to accommodate any overflow.

The combination of Stephen and Dr. Tyson is always superb, so I’m sure attendees will have a ball. Lest anyone’s memory needs a refresher, here’s one of my favorite “Fallback Position” segments:

Open to the public and free of charge?! Curse my geographical position!

Hopefully Stephen will get to interview him just as himself and not as his character, so that he can enjoy the interview. :)

This is awesome. Stephen will finally get a chance to do the type of interview with Dr. Tyson that I’m sure he’d love to do on his show but can’t.

Wow, this event was AMAZING. The auditorium was packed full, and the overflow room had people in it (though I didn’t see how many). Stephen was ‘himself’, not his character, and though he peppered it with his trademark humor, the interview was a thought-provoking discussion of science, astrophysics in particular, and science education in general.

Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson is a phenomenal mind in these fields – I hope he has a chance to speak with those in political power on a regular basis – I think his ideas are the key to our future as a nation.

Dr. Stephen, of course, is a masterful interviewer. He showed that he is lightning-fast with the ‘wit,’ and razor-sharp with the ‘knowledge.’ I hope we can see more of Stephen in the future on TV in long-form interviews – he knows how to allow his guests to relax and be honest and forthcoming with their thoughts.

Thank you, Dr’s. Niel and Stephen for a really funny and thought-provoking evening. I hope Stephen does more of these – I’ll be there for every one!! (Doris Kearns Goodwin would be another great guest, and she comes on Stephen and Jon’s shows quite often…)

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0
