Spoiler alert: Stephen Colbert in upcoming skating race?

By Ms Interpreted on December 21st, 2009 ·

Once again, our friendly neighborhood Stephen Colbert brings new meaning to the phrase “hard-working” by filming a segment over his break. This looks like it’s going to be yet another knockout in his Olympic series; click past the fold for more information.

Fredricks teams up with Colbert
By GAZETTE STAFF Sunday, Dec. 20, 2009

Tucker Fredricks of Janesville will do his part to thank The Colbert Nation.

The U.S. Olympic team speedskater will “coach” Steven Colbert, host of Comedy Central’s Colbert Report, in a race against U.S. Olympic gold medalist Shani Davis.

. . .

“At first, I was supposed to race, but they decided to have somebody else,” Fredricks said. “Shani’s name came up, and Shani said ‘yeah.’ ’’

Fredricks said he enjoys Colbert, and he will be ready to take the comedian’s quick wit.

“I really like the show,” Fredricks said. “I know he will make fun of me, and won’t be able to make a comeback.’’

Obviously, the Gazette hasn’t yet realized that “SteVens” are “jerks”, but otherwise, this is great news!

Oh man. Now i guess we have the Curling and Skating to look forward to! So stoked!!

Still hoping for something hockey related!

Well maybe Shani has calmed down a bit. I’m so glad he’s agreed to race Stephen! If he proves that he has a sense of humor after all, it won’t be as hard for me to root for him in the Olympics. I think it’s gonna be great too, that Stephen gets a coach, but really he still may have to resort to hurling his skate across the finish line to win.

I am SO excited for this!! That is excellent that Shani agreed to race Stephen. This US Speedskating sponsorship just gets better and better every day. :)
Also, I think it was in that Dan Patrick interview, but I think the $300,000 dollars that the Speedskating team needs will be raised by the time the show comes back on Jan. 4th. GO COLBERT NATION!

If Stephen wears the spandex suit that he wore for the SI photoshoot during the race (tie included), my brain is going to explode from me laughing so hard.

Ha ha! Yeah, mine too. I wonder if he’ll stuff something in it again like he did with the bobsled segment. That was hilarious!

Seriously though, does the man ever really take a vacation?

I don’t know – if he did that, it might slow him down hahaha. :P I loved that part in the bobsled segment, too, and I *loved* the audience’s reaction to his outfit.

While his dedication just makes me have more respect for him, I really hope he actually gets to RELAX over the Christmas break. The guy must never sleep.

Yes, Nation, there is a Santa Claus! I can’t believe this is happening- especially since Stephen has admitted he can’t skate. He will be left with nothing but his own devices–great comedy!

I can’t believe Shani has agreed! I was sure he wouldn’t. Should be lots of fun. Yea!

OMG…this…is beyond awesome. The man has balls of steel. And he really puts new meaning in “hard working”! The more I read about Stephen, the more I admire him. The man is incredible!

Thank you for the article and the update, Ms. Interpreted!

Huzzah! This is going to be gold. Wonder if Shani Davis became an it-getter, or he just wants the opportunity to kick that “jerk” Stephen Colbert’s butt. Maybe a little bit of both?

Yeah, I do think it’s a little bit of both. I also think that Stephen not insulting him back but instead making fun of the whole thing by challenging him to a race had something to do with why Shani agreed to race him. Regardless, I’m sure he and Stephen will have a very interesting pre-interview conversation, lol.

I kind of wonder if Shani was an it-getter from the beginning, and we just didn’t get the joke. Stephen says Stevens are “jerks” and we get it. Shani says “Stephen” is a “jerk” and our hackles go up. Maybe he’s just got bad comedic timing.

I wondered that, too.
I guess in the end, regardless of Shani’s intentions, it’s turned into a good thing, because Stephen’s just turned it into another hilarious Olympic segment. After all, had Shani not called him a jerk, we wouldn’t have this upcoming race to look forward to. :D

I wonder about this too. I wonder if Davis calling him a “jerk” was all part of the set up. Still, it’s going to be hilarious!

Thanks Ms. I – can’t wait to see this! I wonder what comic twists Stephen will resort to in this segment. (There’s more than one way to cross the finish line I imagine.)

He’s taping it on Sunday, December 27? Oh my Stephen. I hope you take a little more vacation after this before the show starts up again. Can’t wait to see the race!

It really does seem like Colbert has not taken a huge long break in such a while. His dedication is unbelievable.

The irony of it all is that when TCR is on break is when we usually get spoilers of him going on the road and doing more crazy work.

I can’t wait to see this and the curling thing. Stephen is amazing, the way he injects himself into current events.

Go, Stephen and US Speedskating!
