Colbert Report Episode guideEPISODE NUMBER: 5161 (December 16, 2009)
GUESTS: Stephen King, Tom Brokaw
SEGMENTS: The WØRD: Spyvate Sector, Better Know a Stephen
VIDEOS: Wednesday, December 16, 2009

This last week has felt like a month as far as Stephen Colbert news is concerned. We have had such a massive amount of information and news and interesting things (and powerful music performances) to post that we’ve just been in a blogging frenzy. That being said, it’s so sad to realize that this is the last ‘Colbert Report’ episode guide of 2009. We’ve done 160 of these bad boys so far to go along with all of the shows of the year, and it’s hard to believe that we’re wrapping up the fifth calendar year that the show has been broadcasting! Good times!

What a show we ended the year on, huh, Zoners? I loved the “Shining” flash that Stephen had when he roamed the halls of the ‘Colbert Report’ offices on his little tricycle. The red sweaters were a nice touch. I also enjoyed the dialog with Stephen King about the gay terrorist in his book. He’s definitely going to be pushing some paper with that character! One last thing – Stephen King has the best glasses frames EVER!

I always enjoy interviews with Tom Brokaw. He’s always delightful, and has a fantastic sense of humor. Talk about an it-getter! Having Stephen get Tom to say “Whazzup?” was one of the funniest moments of the show, not only for hearing that amazingly ridonkulous word come of of Tom Brokaw’s mouth, but for Stephen’s genuine amusement that he managed to get Tom to say it.

The ending monologue with accompanying graphics was so fantastic. But why, oh WHY did he show his vomiting one last time?! Gah!

What thoughts do you have about the last ‘Colbert Report’ of 2009?

Stephen Colbert and Stephen King - December 16, 2009

  • I know it must have been heartbreaking to find out that Tiger was endorsing other companies on the side.
  • Ho on. Do a Tiger.
  • After all, is this really the best a man can get?
  • Stay strong, Tiger, you are going to bounce back. Nobody else in the world is better at getting their balls out of a trap.
  • Khalid Sheikh Mohammed’s New Year’s Rockin’ Jihad.
  • Although, truth be told, Ryan Seacrest is the one I’d put in Gitmo.
  • “Can You Hear Me Hear You Now?”
  • I, for one, am shocked. Does Yahoo still have customers? [Google It]
  • I’m sorry, it was Mussilini, talking about fascism.
  • Where does C get off telling me to put E before I?
  • There is one place where spelling is crucial. My name. It is Stephen with a PH, not Steven with a V. Stephens who spell it with a V are jerks.
  • The book firmly established Stephen King as a master of horror who had no friends in high school.
  • Being raised by a half-man, half-reptile must have been terrifying.
  • Is he gay marrying people? Is that’s what’s terrifying?
  • You’ve said that hell is doing the same thing over and over again. In a related question, you’ve written 2 books a year for 35 years. Are you in hell?
  • I’ll take your word for it, I haven’t read any of your work.
  • So you’re saying you’re lazy, that’s what you’re saying.
  • On the other hand, the decade was very good to me.
  • It’s not enough to look at history, you have to find someone to blame for history.
  • I think this has been a wonderful decade for civility and anyone who disagrees with me can gargle my mansack.
  • We’ve got to say goodbye to the decade, but before we do, one last time, for old time’s sake, Wazzzzup!

  1. Jenny with a Y says:

I absolutely loved the “Goodnight Moon” inspired goodbye segment. It was the perfect way to end the year.

I also liked the shout-out to Steve Carell. Dare I hope for a BKAS segement in the future featuring Steve Carell? That would be massive!

Next year seems so far away. I miss Stephen and Jon already.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  2. Erika says:

I really enjoyed that Tom Brokaw interview. Hearing Stephen go through all the horrible events of this decade actually gave me quite a sick feeling, but then I started to think about just how amazing and important it’s been to have The Daily Show and The Colbert Report during these past tumultuous years. I can’t even begin to describe how thankful I am to have those two shows to keep me from tearing my hair out and feeling like there is no hope left. I’m reminded of Jon Stewart talking about his “morning cup of sadness” watching the news for the day, and then turning that sadness and rage into something beautiful….laughter. That’s what Jon and Stephen and all of their writers and crew do for us and I am a much saner happier person for it.

It was such a cute way to end the show too. :) He’s such a joy machine!

I wholeheartedly agree with you. The sheer power of laughter in times of sadness is why I love comedy so much. The feeling that I get from watching Jon and Stephen through fits of laughter is one of pure joy. :)

    “Wazzup!”
End of the Colbert year is always a bummer. But its so true that this year was so full & delicious it would be tough to be more satisfied. Excited for 2010, the Olympics & whatever goodies they have up their sleeves!
Merry Christmas everyone! That’s right I said Christmas! LOL

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  4. Michele says:

I thought of you, DB, when they showed that puking footage during the Goodbye segment. I loved that segment other than that. LOL! I loved the Better Know a Stephen segment! I’m not a big fan of King’s books but I do like him. And yes, his glasses frames were great! Stephen getting Brokaw to say “Wazzup!” was hilarious! I’m still giggling about that one.

Love that screencap by the way! LOL!

  5. luvtcr says:

I love how Steve Carell was his example of a jerk during his intro to the segment [and his "great seeing you Saturday" comment was cute! Oh how I wish they had the time to collaborate more!]

Good episode to end the year on! I really enjoyed the review at the end. Stephen has had quite a few adventures and an eventful year on which to report! Well done TCR staff! We will miss you, but enjoy the well-deserved break!!!

  6. leora says:

i loved the better know a stephen.
and did anyone else realize the new member of the nation is michael brumm’s kid (or at least it seems like it)is it just me or is it baby season at the colbert report!!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  7. Agree about Stephen King and his glasses. I want those frames, too!

I was alternately cringing and laughing at the discussion between Tom Brokaw and Stephen re the horrible events of this decade. Like Erika, I’m grateful for the presence of The Daily Show and The Colbert Report on late-night cable. The two shows never fail to make us laugh and hope for the best.

And that was a lovely poem to end the last show of 2009.

  8. mori says:

I loved the goodbye to 2009 segment, if only for it showcasing the massive love that the people at TCR (and TDS as well) have for the being known as Keyboard Cat.

  9. cordgrass says:

One of the best signoffs ever! And The Shining homage was perfection, I laughed so hard.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  10. ColbertGirl27 says:

I was going to vote for the Stephen King segment, but that goodbye segment was just so touching especially at the end when Stephen said “Goodbye me, Stephen Colbert, goodbye Colbert Nation, I’ll see you next year.” I know it was simple, but he just seemed so genuine and he seemed to love us as much we love him:) Aw…

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • jentaps says:

I agree with you, ColbertGirl27. I was going to vote for the Tom Brokaw interview (he’s a great friend of the show – and Whazzup? – bwah). But I went with the Goodbye segment too.
So sweet and adorable. Plus it was such a fantastic riff on Goodnight Moon. I used to read that to my daughter when she was little, and now she’s 18 and out of the house. It was a great way to end what has been a fantastic year of shows.
The singing! Iraq! US Speedskating! Magazine covers! The C.O.L.B.E.R.T.! Character breaks! And some fabulous guests.
I, for one, can’t wait to see what he does next. Thank you, Stephen, and everyone at TCR!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

      • ColbertGirl27 says:

Aw. Thanks jentaps! My mom read Goodnight Moon to me when I was little and I hope to do the same if I ever have kids:)

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  11. Ms Interpreted says:

That signoff was adorable — such a cute riff on the classic Goodnight Moon. Serious love for that one. :)

And The Shining parody was hilarious; Stephen King was being a very good sport, playing along with it. That whole “Better Know a Stephen” idea is a hoot; I hope it means we see fewer misspellings of his name from here on out. The shout out to Carell was a great touch.

All that AND a WØRD? Stephen really went out on a strong week. Happy end of 2009, sir!

  12. nie says:

Stephen Fry was in the “Better Know a Stephen” gallery. This interview just has to happen.

THAT would be a true battle of the wits. Wow. Have you heard of his BBC show “QI”? Check it out on YouTube.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

      • nie says:

I have heard of “QI”, yes. It’s as brilliant as almost anything by Stephen Fry. :)

hi! colbert christmas is available on hulu! yey!

  14. Sadie07 says:

I love the fact that he and Stephen King(in the red sweaters) are holding hands. It just makes me laugh.
And I want “Steven” Carell to change his first name to “Stephen” so we can “better know” him.

A great episode. A wonderful way to end a great week.

    Happy holidays, everyone!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • looped linear says:

Yes, the handholding was hysterical, and made the very kid-like, mad handwaving just that much funnier. =D
A good last show, and a good week.

Have a happy holidays, merry christmas and happy new year, everyone!

      You too, Colbert. lol

  15. jennie says:

The last show of the decade! (Unless I get all pedantic and point out that, really, the decade started with the millennium 1/1/2001 and will end 31/12/2010.)

The list of disasters for the decade reminded me of Stephen’s prediction at the end of the 2000 election coverage on ‘The Daily Show’. Unfortunately I’m visiting in Canada and can’t look for the clip on Comedy Central…

btw – it is not unfortunate to be in Canada overall, just for the TDS video block thing!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  16. lockhart43 says:

Stephen’s reaction to Tom Brokaw finally saying “Wazzzup!” made me happy. I love that smile. I can’t believe that word became popular when I was in 6th grade. Oh how the time flies…
Watching Stephen ride through the halls on that tricycle was A-D-O-R-A-B-L-E. I loved the Stephen King interview, and I especially loved the Steve Carell/Second City shout-out! Can there *please* be an Even Stevphen reunion in the near future?
Even though the audience groaned, I did love the text in The Word about Jefferson: [That Guy Was A Real Slave-Driver] – especially since we talked about him extensively in my Early American History class this semester. And how awesome would it be if Mount Rushmore shot lasers? Or maybe it does…I don’t know, I’m not the President. hahaha
A fantastic episode to cap off an absolutely fantastic year of shows! :)

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year to all TCR staff! We’ll see you all soon.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  18. jentaps says:

Fract about Stephen King: He’s in a rock band with some other writers (one of them is Dave Barry, amazingly funny columnist and author). The name of the band? Rock Bottom Remainders. :-)

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  19. Roseha says:

Just rewatched this tonight. There were many great segments, I loved the Stephen King part (though like “Stephen” I’ve never read any of his books – I am a real chicken) – the whole concept of “better know a Stephen” is fabulous and I hope they do squeeze in an interview with Steve Carell (loved the shout out too). Tom Brokaw was a fine last guest for 2009.

I absolutely loved the “Good Night Moon” ending. Troops, speed skating team, Keyboard Cat – what a year. And very sweet.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  20. robm says:

Anyone notice in the Goodnight, Moon segment that he said goodnight to his set, and his desk?

Most of us know from Stephen’s past interviews that there would be a new set (one assumes coinciding with the news that they’ll return in January in HD), but whether he’d change his desk was a big question. Anyone wonder if the parallelism between saying goodbye to his set (for good) and then his desk is a sign the desk will change?
