The Chicago Tribune has posted the first review for the ‘Colbert Report’ panel during the Second City 50th Anniversary events:
Stephen Colbert reveals secrets at Second City
Chris Jones – Posted at 11:47:12 AM“He’s not mendacious and stupid,” said Purcell of the character whom the writers internally call “the guy” or “the character.” “He’s innocent and stupid. He’s more like a puppy urinating on your politics.”
Colbert said that he “thinks of the show as one continuous scene,” that just happens to be extended day after day. “Truthiness is the thesis statement for the show,” Colbert said. “I always tell the audience to have a good show, because they are the second character in the scene.”
“Initiations and responses,” said Gwinn, “are where we make our discoveries.”
The show works, it was generally agreed, because it is mostly reactive to what goes on around it.
Colbert also described, hilariously, his recent testimony in a court case involving Viacom and Google, wherein lawyers, he said, couldn’t keep straight whether they were deposing him or his character.
“I sometimes mean what I said,’ Colbert said, turning more serious towards the panel’s end. “And I don’t care if the audience knows when that is.”
And here’s a picture of the panel from the moderator’s view (Peter Sagal, of “Wait, Wait, Wait … Don’t Tell Me”).

“He’s innocent and stupid. He’s more like a puppy urinating on your politics.” Hahahaha! Great description of “Stephen” by Tom Purcell. Oh how I wish I could have been there…being a broke college student really sucks sometimes.
Hopefully a podcast or mp3 of the panel will be released – I’d really love to hear it. And that picture? Adorable.

Interesting stuff even though it’s just little pieces. I call him “the character” too, because there’s no way I could call that guy by Stephen’s name!
What’s all this about a court case though, I wonder? Involving Viacom and Google? Sounds like a copyright thing but very mysterious. Hilarious though that the lawyers couldn’t keep Stephen and his character apart!

I read that it’s about Viacom wanting Google to release all information on anyone with Youtube accounts. I think they won the case and some people want Google to fight it, in fear that we’re losing our privacy.

I’m sure Stephen does agree with “Stephen” sometimes but not as often as he alludes to. I think the reason he mentions that so often is because he wants to keep his viewers guessing. I know that it thrilled him when that Ohio State report came out, so he probably wants to continue a little bit of ambiguity. Of course, that could just be me seeing what I want to see, which is exactly what the OSU study was about! :)

Is there any video/audio of this panel available online? I’d love to check out the whole thing… thanks in advance!
