‘A Colbert Christmas’ nominated for a 2010 Grammy Award

Hey kids, you may have missed it in all the ridiculous coverage of the Tiger Woods saga (or in the — mostly — less ridiculous coverage of the upcoming escalation in Afghanistan), but nominations for the 2010 Grammys were announced last night. Happily, the Recording Academy saw fit to nominate A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift of All! in the “Best Comedy Album” category. Here’s his competition:

Best Comedy Album
(For comedy recordings, spoken or musical)

Back From The Dead
Spinal Tap
[The Label Industry/Artist2Market Distribution]

A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift Of All!
Stephen Colbert
[Comedy Central Records]

Internet Leaks
“Weird Al” Yankovic
[Volcano]

My Weakness Is Strong
Patton Oswalt
[Degenerate/Warner Bros.]

Suckin’ It For The Holidays
Kathy Griffin
[Music With A Twist]

Tall, Dark & Chicano
George Lopez
[Comedy Central Records]

You can check out other nominations and Grammy news here at GRAMMY.com.

Given that the Recording Academy has broken Stephen’s heart before (below), let’s hope it sees fit to give him his Grammy this time around!

  1. Tiger says:

to be clear I am NOT the Tiger who has been receiving so much attention lately…I love awards, an even nominations, so YAY for all those involved with A Colbert Christmas! so exciting!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • Roland says:

I think the Woods media attention is very stupid–so i appreciated TDS’ mocking last night.

I’m still not sure that Tiger could legally be fined for reckless driving.

For one, he was in a private subdivision, the roads are not public property and thus Florida police has no jurisdiction–private property you can drive without liscense, while drunk, or however you please. If i was tiger i would take the ticket to court–but of course he doesn’t want to so that he can minimize publicity. But police officers have no right to fine him as he was on private property.

      • bipolypesca says:

But didn’t he run into a fire hydrant? I mean, he didn’t own the fire hydrant, right? So couldn’t he be ticketed for damaging city property (due to reckless driving, hence the ticket)?

I hope Stephen will be at the Grammys for this! (They are in LA right?) I think he has a really good chance this time, especially with all the great artists who helped out on this special. Good luck Stephen!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  4. Weren’t they already nominated last year? All of his awards are a blur. Perhaps it didn’t scoot in for last year’s nominations.

    hmm

    • DB says:

Stephen was nominated for Spoken Word for “I Am America (And So Can You!)”, but lost to Al Gore. Hence the clip embedded in the post.

This is the first time Colbert Christmas has been nominated.

  5. DB says:

This is fantastic news! I was positively heartbroke that “Colbert Christmas” didn’t win one emmy, but we’ve still got a chance at an award for that brilliant Christmas special.

The “Comedy” category of the Grammy awards has been a note of contention for comedy fans for close to 15 years. In 1994, after the same musician (PDQ Bach) winning four Grammies in a row, they switched the category from Music or Spoken Word to allowing only the Spoken Word comedy to be submitted.

As for the current nominees, “Weird Al” has won multiple Grammy awards – in 2004 for the “Poodle Hat” CD, and in 1985 for his single “Eat It”. Al fans were especially irked about the Spoken Word designation, because some of his most popular and critically acclaimed works, especially “Running With Scissors”, were ineligible for the award.

Being a huge Al fan (seriously, I’ve been a fan for years, even went to AlCon in 2000), I can understand why Al might be a favorite in this category for “Internet Leaks”. But, truth be told, the five songs on this internet-only EP simply aren’t strong as a group, nothing like “Running With Scissors”, or even “Poodle Hat”, which I thought was a much inferior work to RWS. And while I enjoyed the “Back From The Dead” album by Spinal Tap, I thought that it was more of a retread than a fresh, new album. I haven’t heard the spoken word albums by Kathy Griffin, Patton Oswald or George Lopez, so I can’t vouch for whether they are strong contenders. However, Comedy Central talent has been blessed in the past – Jon Stewart and the cast of ‘The Daily Show’ won the Comedy Grammy in 2005 for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart Presents … America: A Citizen’s Guide to Democracy Inaction.

It’s entirely possible that Stephen could pull this one out. So we’ll wait and see on Jan. 31, 2010!

Speaking of Weird Al, we were just decorating our Christmas tree and had to pull out “The Saga Begins” and sing along, um, because we were hanging the (traditional?) podracers…

Did that come out too nerdly? Because I didn’t even get to the Daleks and Star Trek NG guys…

  6. cordgrass says:

OMG! This HAS to win! It’s such a great DVD–I watched the first two advent thingies last night and turned on the fire afterwards. The fire alone they should win for.

grammy grammy grammy grammy come on grammy!

  7. MaryLovesColbert says:

Oh, awesome!! Here’s his chance to reclaim the Grammys – which were so terribly stolen last year by Al Gore (LOL). Can’t wait to see if he wins, my fingers are crossed!

  8. robm says:

Since Incredibad wasn’t nominated in this category (but “I’m on a Boat” was nominated in the actual Rap category – really?), I have non conflicting feelings. Colbert all the way.

  9. Ann G. says:

It would be wonderful if Stephen won this time around! I really do think “A Colbert Christmas” deserves an award. We wuz robbed at the Emmys!

I’m also pulling for Stephen to get out the tux and attend the awards. I’m thinking that would be hilarious (and fodder for at least a couple of day’s worth of shows).

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  10. mrtigger001 says:

this sort of makes up for the Emmys… that is, if they win.

Go for the grammy all the way Colbert!!!

  13. lockhart43 says:

Yes! Maybe the Grammys will give Colbert Christmas the props it deserves, unlike that little awards show known as the Emmys. *fingers crossed*

This category is the only one I will be watching on Grammy night ha :P

  14. dodgerblu says:

I feel like a horrible traitor for even saying this, but I can’t decide who I’m rooting for :( I heard about George Lopez’s nomination before I heard about Stephen’s, and I was so excited for him! I am hispanic and George grew up in the same neighborhood that I did (plus we have the same last name! haha), so I have always been rooting for him to succeed. But can I really just turn my back on the pure joy that is Colbert Christmas?? I need help! Can there be a tie?

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • lockhart43 says:

Well, in a way, it’s a win-win situation. If Stephen wins (which would be fan-freaking-tastic), then he gets good fun out of it on the show. And if he loses, he’ll just talk about it on the show anyway, and claim that they stole his award lol.
So you’re forgiven for secretly rooting for George Lopez ;) ha
