Stephen Colbert in the Zeitgeist – November 23, 2009

zeitgeist2Howdy, Zoners! It’s another break week, and yet it doesn’t feel like one with all the Olympic-class spoilers we’ve seen showing up in the past twenty-four hours. I have the image of Stephen in red spandex burned into my retinas, and I’m sure many of you are having the same experience. I’m really looking forward to seeing these Olympic segments turn up in the near future! In the meantime, here are a few newsy tidbits from around the Internets, your zeitgeist for November 23rd.

Al Gore on Larry King Live

  • Not long after his appearance on the Report as a surprise guest in Formidable Opponent, Al Gore was interviewed by Larry King on his show, and had some kind words about Stephen. From the transcript of the interview over on CNN.com:
    • KING: Our friend, Stephen Colbert, it was a lot of fun. Not many people — and we often say this, maybe you should have shown it more — you have a great sense of humor. Why don’t you use that humor more? Really, politically, but on the other side, Bob Dole also made…
    • GORE: Yes, he’s a very funny guy.
    • KING: Very funny guy.
    • GORE: Very funny guy. Stephen Colbert is a brilliant comedy writer. Were you there for his White House Correspondents Dinner speech?
    • KING: Oh, it was hysterical.
    • GORE: One of the best things I’ve ever seen in either humor or politics.
    • KING: And it’s great to do his show. Did you have fun?
    • GORE: I did have fun. And — yes, I did.

Stephen’s view

  • The View from Stephen Colbert’s Window – New York magazine: I blogged this a couple of weeks ago, but another interesting little tidbit about Matteo Pericoli’s book, The City Out My Window, has just surfaced. The bottle of wine was a nice touch!

“Colbert invited Pericoli to his office. ‘Unfortunately for his family, he spends most of his time there,’ says the artist, a fan. ‘He was very proud of the meaninglessness of his view. I think he thought that my project was going to be about handsome window views. This made me happy — it was so him. He has irony in his veins.’ Afterward, Colbert gave him a bottle of wine.”

TCR’s “fact police”

  • One reporter’s move to ‘The Colbert Report’ – Washington Examiner: Ms I originally blogged about this back in January, but the Washington Examiner this week featured a story about Adam Aigner-Treworgy, a former reporter now working as a researcher for the Report.

“In doing his research, Aigner-Treworgy has figured out who likes and doesn’t like getting calls from ‘The Report.’

‘NRA will never call me back,’ he conceded. ‘Luckily, law professors and professors of things and think tanks will always answer the phone and will talk about it, and it’s great cachet for parents who want to tell their kids that they are getting calls from The Colbert Report.’”

People’s Sexiest Man Alive – not Stephen Colbert

  • In connection with People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive issue, they have a video up on their site with guys answering the question: Who’s your man crush? Both Brendan Hines (from Lie to Me) and Joel McHale (The Soup) named Stephen Colbert. You can watch the video here.

Six Degrees: Neil deGrasse Tyson

  • Neil deGrasse Tyson discussing Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart (video) – In an interview with The Daily O’Collegian, the student-run newspaper at Oklahoma State University, not only does everybody’s favorite astrophysicist explain how he prepares for interviews with Jon and Stephen, he also relates the story behind the time he remained late at TDS after his interview was finished so that he could solve a Rubik’s Cube. He said he was out of practice and it took him longer than usual – a whole 7 minutes. Check out the You Tube video here.

Six Degrees: Amy Sedaris

  • Amy to guest star on ‘New Adventures of Old Christine’ – via AmySedarisRocks.com:

“Old Christine Meets Young Frankenstein” – When Christine finds out that Ritchie has been bullying other kids, she decides to set a good example and apologize to the woman she used to terrorize at school, on THE NEW ADVENTURES OF OLD CHRISTINE, Wednesday, Dec. 9 (8:00-8:30 PM, ET/PT on the CBS Television Network. Amy Sedaris (“Strangers with Candy”) guest stars as Frances, the woman Christine dubbed “Frankenstein” in Junior High…
