While I do agree that Letterman’s a class act and that it’s fantastic what he’s done for the troops, to be fair, he did speak quite a bit about his trips to the Middle East on his show, especially after the first one. And since he didn’t actually tape a live broadcast from over there, and since he doesn’t do the talk show circuit like Stephen does,it would make sense that Stephen’s Iraq shows got a lot more publicity.

Much as I adore Stephen, really I thought the most charming thing about this interview was how just sort of incidentally Letterman mentioned that he’d been to Iraq also. I looked it up, and he’s been there twice. And once to Afghanistan. For Christmas. I loved the Colbert shows that he did from Iraq, and I’ll gouge my eyes out or something if he doesn’t win an Emmy for them next year. And, I’m grateful that he draws attention to the fact that we still have so many people serving in two “forgotten” wars. But, I think Letterman has shown real class in bringing his show to those serving in Iraq and Afghanistan without the grandstanding that “Stephen” and yes, to some extent Stephen, sometimes falls into.

That was my favorite part too.!Stephen seemed geuninely surprised that Letterman had been over to Iraq, as was I, and I’m curious when he last visited. Could it have been during the Persian Gulf War in the early 90s? Haha!
