Episode 5147 (11/16/2009)

Colbert Report Episode guideEPISODE NUMBER: 5147 (November 16, 2009)
GUESTS: Paul Goldberger
SEGMENTS: The WØRD: Skeletons In The Closet, Alpha Dog of the Week
VIDEOS: Monday, November 16, 2009

We’ve only got one more week of shows before the Thankgiving break, kids, so we need to savor them! I really enjoyed tonight’s Leap of Logic involving gay zombies. Now there’s a Gay Pride parade I would like to see!

My favorite segment of the show tonight was definitely Alpha Dog of the Week. Stephen’s itty bitty character breaks while trying to say Steven Tyler’s alternative pronunciations were adorkable. His Steve Perry reference was definitely not wasted on this child of the 80′s. I also liked his Perrysmith reference, which made me think of another band who changed singers, Van Halen, or how many refer to it, Van Hagar.

While the interview was lovely, the part that really caught my attention was the reference to the show going HD. From what I’ve heard from whiffs and rumors, and from a couple of short mentions in interviews recently, the set is getting a redesign during the 3-week hiatus in December, and part of that redesign includes adding high-def filming equipment. Here’s hoping that my local Time Warner station starts showing the Comedy Central HD channel soon. I need to call them about that today.

So what did all of you enjoy about the show tonight?

Stephen Colbert - November 16, 2009

  • Puke shoes? A delicacy there.
  • Life is full of little ironies, none greater than the fact that God decreed that gays must never marry, but then made them such great wedding planner. Gays, I believe thou hadst been punked.
  • If you wish to be perfect, go and sell your possessions and give the money to the poor … Unless a couple of dudes register at the Pottery Barn, in which case, f**k the poor.
  • That’s right, these gay zombies want our brains!
  • Let’s suppose that one day, God forbid, the governor dies. How is he supposed to rest in peace knowing that a couple of plots over, a couple of dudes are being gay dead. [Gives New Meaning To Headstone].
  • Exactly – just those minor singing spots.
  • Joe, you are a rock God, because like God, you are rarely seen.
  • Ooh, I’m sorry, Snickers Toupee? Sachmo Taint?
  • How so? How does my house boss me around? I wear the pants of my house!
  • That’s how I like my art – at quite a clip.

Gosh, I wish the high-def cameras had come a little sooner.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  2. ColbertGirl27 says:

Voted for The Word, but may I also give a shout-out for the interview due to the ridiculously adorkable moment when Stephen recalled kissing Mary Sue (?) in the kindergarten classroom and subsequently waved to her?! Ah! If I was Mary Sue, I would be very happy right now.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

I also voted for the Word, but that moment was lovely indeed! He really is the perfect man.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  3. Roseha says:

I loved the Mary Sue shout-out too! I’m convinced she’s real and was watching :)

I liked it when Paul Goldberger told Stephen he was imaginative (for the description of his “house”) and Stephen seemed happy & surprised.

Time Warner in New York better give us Comedy Central in HD – it’s almost the only channel not in HD now.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

That was a hell of a WØRD last night. It was funny, but it was right on the line for me because I couldn’t help thinking how devestating that must have been for the Rhode Islander whose story it was based on. A very strong piece, at any rate, and a story that needed highlighting.

I liked the interview quite a bit; I think Goldberger’s point about what our buildings say about us is a valid one. It’s worth asking ourselves why we’re drawn to certain things, whether that might be for aesthetic reasons, ethical ones or just from how we feel when we’re in them. Also, it’s interesting to try to figure out why certain buildings or styles interest us; I really loved some of the Gothic and Art Nouveau buildings in Prague when I was there, for instance, but I was also surprised by how cool I thought the very modern “Dancing House” (the “Fred and Ginger” building) was. Anyhow, I thought it was a very cool interview.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

K… so I can honestly say that my love for Aerosmith has recently kinda… died. But if Stephen became the new vocalist… ohmygod. I would die. Haha! All day yesterday I was thinking that Stephen should do a comedy album, but this is so much better :P

Ps. Van Hagar sucks!! DAVID LEE ROTH ALL THE WAY BABY!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • Ms Interpreted says:

Heh. I agree that Aerosmith isn’t the band that it used to be, but I forgive them for just about anything because of “Dream On”. And when you’ve been in a smallish auditorium, with Steven Tyler perched on a stool just a few rows of people away from you while he sings that one … yeah, you realize that there’s some element of “cool” still in the guy that’s just impossible to overlook.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  6. luvtcr says:

It was hard to choose–can I vote twice, three times?! I guess I will abstain. What a lucky girl Mary Sue is to get her own little “Shout Out” (Hey!)from Stephen. My kindergarten kiss does NOT host his own television show! And, Oh! HD…it is already listed on my Fios lineup!

I really enjoyed the interview, I have lived in a variety of apartments and houses over the years and find myself drawn to certain architectual styles. I would like to check out this book and find out what it says about me! Very interesting.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

The Word was absolutely fantastic last night. From the joke about the fake reference in the bible to two guys registering at Pottery Barn to the ending comment, it was really the highlight of the show for me.
And Sachmo Taint is probably how I will be referring to Steven Tyler from now on hahaha!

Really loved the blue tie last night as well; Stephen seemed to already be in a great mood throughout the show, but that tie just seemed to amplify his joy. :D

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  8. mrtigger001 says:

The Word gets the vote. My favorite moments are when the writers make up Bible verses, because those never fail.

I loved the look on Stephen’s face when Goldberger gave away that they were getting a new HD-friendly set and said, “if you want landmark status, you can’t just change the set when someone offers you a new one.” Stephen had that look that people give you when you accidentally give away that you’re throwing a surprise birthday party.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  9. Kinsa says:

Thoroughly enjoyed the Word but I have to go with the ADotW. I don’t think I’ve seen anyone outside of my family that can do that trick with the tongue and bottom lip – I use it for my impersonation of Angelina Jolie.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  10. Michele says:

The Word got my vote but I also really enjoyed the interview. I love to just wander around cities looking at the different buildings in different neighborhoods. I’m not a particularly religious person but I really love going inside old churches. They’re usually very beautiful.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  11. Loved The Word, and I also loved the Paul Goldberger’s purple striped socks :)

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  12. John says:

Was that walk to the interview table adorable or what?

    And that WORD was killer!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • lockhart43 says:

Ohhh yes that walk to the interview WAS adorable. I had forgotten about it until you mentioned it :)

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0
