Klassic Kolbert: Stephen Colbert as US Comedy Arts Festival’s “Person of the Year”
ByI don’t know how many of you recall this, but Stephen Colbert was awarded the US Comedy Arts Festival’s “Person of the Year” award in 2007. For whatever reason (and we’re not questioning it), Plum TV has seen fit to post snippets of Stephen’s acceptance interview from that event, interspersed with their own questions to our favorite “fundit”. Please enjoy today’s blast from the past, courtesy of Plum TV:
Well, hey there, Dapper Dan!
Yes, I think the thing that amuses me most about this clip is seeing Stephen “out of costume”. He almost always wears Brooks Brothers to his appearances nowadays, doesn’t he?

Brooks Brothers was already providing his wardrobe in 2007, IIRC. I was referring to Stephen’s non-Colbert Report appearances.

Thank you, I didn’t know who was providing his wardrobe back then.

I can assure you, MsInterpreted reads the credits. She’s the eagle eye who almost always catches new writers or staff as they begin to get official credited. MsI has been with the blog almost since its inception.
I think you may have misinterpreted her meaning (pardon the pun). Lately, or should I say, in the past year or two, when he’s at public appearances, he’s almost exclusively in the suit and tie, or slacks and dress jacket look. Most likely, the pieces are Brooks Brothers. Hence the “Brooks Brothers look”.
But there was a time when Stephen made most of his appearances in more casual gear, such as this instance with the fleece and jeans. While he still manages to make it look put together and dressy, he’s gotten much more formal as the show has gone on as far as non-character appearances go.
I blame the PhD from Knox – all that high-falutin’ faux liberal arts education has gone to his head.

I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to sound rude about it. ^^;

Nah, I think it was the knighthood that really put him over the top. I mean, I’ve got a Ph.D., but you don’t see me trotting out the business attire. Now, if they made me a Dame or whatever the Female Sirs are called, I’d be in sequins and tiaras at the beach :)

Oh that was so enjoyable to watch! Only bad thing is it makes me want to see more. ;)
Impressive flexibility from Stephen! It’s so nice to see him in casual wear. As always he’s working the crowd, charming, funny, and interesting. That man, I tell ya….

It really is so nice to see him in casual looking clothing. Yet he still looks so preppy (I just typed pretty instead of preppy, but he does look quite pretty too).

Also, hard to imagine that we’ve got 8 comments so far and no one has mentioned the grabbing maneuver at the outset as a notable moment. I bring your attention to this moment, of course, purely by way of pointing out the admirable restraint of our dear readers, and for no other reason at all. Really.

Yes admirable restraint is the right way to put it! :) I wanted to say something but I was worried I might accidentally cross the family friendly line.

I have no idea to what you are referring. I noticed no such thing. Nor did I go back and watch :45-:50 ten or twelve (who’s counting?) times.

Haha! We are nothing if tasteful. Or at least we try…though I won’t pretend I didn’t notice it. :P

That is because we are classy people. We are so classy that we allow ourselves to watch it two or three or even four more times. Just to make sure that it really did happen. But only for that reason. :P
I can’t lie. I am just immature enough to have rewatched that part of the clip HA :)

Oh, I didn’t even notice that before! It’s the nerdy version of the Michael Jackson move! Too soon?

I love the poster in the back, how it says “Not You. Me.” It is all at once an in-character joke about Stephen’s vanity as well as a jab at Time’s decision to make “You” the person of the year. Very very well played.

“If you want the world to change, wait til it changes.” – HA! That line is bee-rilliant.
Great video! I’m loving the casual look as well :)

Great interview! I love him getting confrontational with the host (Greenfield?) right away. And the glasses thing. Two can play that game! Bwah!
