“Sunny day, sweepin’ the clouds away …”
By Ms Interpreted on November 10th, 2009 ·Okay, I think I’ve mentioned here before that I think puppets are kind of weird; they tend not to entertain me unless they’re wildly rumpus-ing in Where the Wild Things Are or singing “The Lonely Goatherd” in The Sound of Music (marionettes there, but you get the idea).
Muppets, however, are an entirely different story. Muppets totally rock. I seriously love Muppets. Maybe not Elmo so much, but Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem, Waldorf and Statler (and Waldorf’s Muppet-wife, Astoria!), Kermit and his little nephew Robin, those crazy alien things that come down from space and say, “Ohhh, yip-yip yip-yip. Brrrr-ring!” and such … yeah, those things are awesome. DB and I had a fun little descent into nostalgia talking about Piggy and Kermit, et al, when Google started in on its Sesame Street-themed search pages last week.
So, to honor the 40th anniversary of Sesame Street, here are just a few clips from The Daily Show and The Colbert Report featuring those lovable Jim Henson creations:

Hehehe, so funny. Especially Jon interviewing the muppets. And that toss, so cute. I wonder how much of that was actually planned…
In that first video though, those are some seriously MASSIVE cookies! And I do mean massive as in HUGE!
Thank you for posting!
And the reCaptcha: 1971 lewdness!

Ha ha! Great videos!
And of course anyone who has seen Avenue Q will never be able to look at puppets the same way again.

. . . don’t forget about the Colbert Report’s obligatory picture of Guy Smiley when Mit Romney is mentioned by Stephen.

Yeah, there were a lot that I didn’t use (I do actually have to earn my paycheck during working hours, more’s the pity); the Guy Smiley stuff, the toss with Sam the (American) Eagle, etc. … I had to pick and choose.
It’s good that they give us so much to choose from, though. :)

Haha, well I guess we’ll just have to help you out then!
Here’s an awesome Muppets-related one from TDS. The Kermit the Frog part is the kicker:

Aww! Thanks for honoring Sesame Street for their 40th anniversary! I’ve loved seeing all the characters featured on the Google webpage. Sesame Street is pretty awesome. :P And I loved when Cookie Monster was on TCR! =D

Nah (they looked like twins, and the wrong ages), though I do wonder whose they were.

I loved these and I’m crossing my fingers for a Sesame Street shout-out tonight! Out of the muppets, my favourite was always the Swedish Chef *Mumble something not swedish* then….”bork bork bork!”

My favorite Statler and Waldorf moment is this audio clip:
It was wonderful!

Hee hee! I had a Muppet Show album when I was younger (that’s right, an ALBUM!) that had that track on it. It was one of my faves. The whole album was made of awesome (“The Great Gonzo Eats a Rubber Tire to ‘The Flight of the Bumblebee’” was one of the tracks, for instance), but Statler and Waldorf were always a highlight.

haha, that clip reminds me of this clip, where Statler & Waldorf are coerced into a change of heart:

Oh man, I do love that C is for Chubby sketch. Funny, plus the bonus that Stephen interacting with little kids is just freaking adorable (makes me think of the Astrophysicist Fallback Position). Wonder who’s kids they were?
On the Sesame side of things, I get the double benefit of having loved the show as a child (The Muppet Show, too!), and appreciating it as a specialist in child development. Happy birthday Sesame Street!

Funny, I just saw an old Martha Stewart episode where Elmo was the guest. Adorable kids with Stephen and the giant cookies and Jon is just so charming around the Muppets :)
Happy Anniversary to Sesame Street! :)

The Muppet Show was one of my favorite shows. Time to see if my library has any of the DVDs of that, or of Season 1 of Sesame Street. I really want to see the extras.
“Six-degrees” question: Does anyone know when the actual interview with Elmo and Ricky Gervais will air (don’t tell me I missed it!)? Actually, what I’d really enjoy would be outtakes of the outtakes that aired on YouTube last spring.
