EPISODE NUMBER: 5143 (November 9, 2009)
GUESTS: Thomas Campbell
SEGMENTS: Health care bill passes, Better Know a District – Mike Castle (Delaware’s At Large district), US Speedskating takes home the gold
VIDEOS: Monday, November 9, 2009
I’ve missed the ‘Better Know a District’ series ever so. I found the whole joke arc with the cockblocking and chicken marriage to be absolutely hysterical. Between the chicken talk and the Florence Henderson “scandal” talk, that has got to be some of the most bizarre lines of questioning of any BKAD. I think that Congressman Castle held his own while still allowing Stephen to flail in absurdity.
It makes me so happy to see that the Colbert Nation has raised $202,000 so far for US Speedskating. I’m glad that the Nation is coming through, and that the sport is getting lots of publicity from both the blogosphere and the mainstream media over this story. I also find it funny that the same day that Go Fug Yourself mentions their desire to see Stephen Colbert wear the speedskating unitard that this graphic comes up … so close … so close.
There are certain quirky elements of Stephen’s character that never fail to amuse me – Stephen’s fascination with mustaches, his search engine history of tall women lifting heavy things, and his latent homosexual tendancies. But I don’t think anything amuses me more than Stephen’s penchant for licking things. Of course, I now see Stephen’s use of the phrase “If they like it, they should lick it” as being the catalyst of some very awkward Q&A sessions before tapings.
What did you all think of the episode today?

- The Republicans cannot get enough of black comedians. That’s why they hired Michael Steel.
- Just when I thought C-Span couldn’t get any more exciting, wait until you watch Joe Lieberman read the phone book. It’s better than Shark Week, it’s Jowl Week.
- Folks, you know I love being first. That’s why the legal name of this show is AAAAThe Colbert Report.
- 59th installment of my 434 part series, Better Know a District – Deleware’s At-Large District.
- Due to its favorable tax laws, Delaware is the legal home to 2/3 of the Fortune 500 companies. In fact, 1209 N. Orange St., seen here in Wilmington, is the registered office of over 200,000 different companies, leading to some particularly heated arguments as to whose yogurt that is in the staff fridge.
- This is like interviewing a panda.
- At what point do you stop asking Delaware, Congressman, and ask Dela-why?
- I’m something of a cock-thusiast, are you?
- So you are going to cockblock Delaware.
- Crazy people are still Americans.
- You don’t believe Delaware should allow people to marry chickens. You’re burning bridges in every direction.
- You’re implying that I’d consummate my relationship with the chicken. That’s an offensive idea.
- Mike Castle: I would strongly recommend that you rethink your marriage with the chicken.
- All of them had hair of gold like their mother, did the carpet match the drapes?
- We are all going to the Olympics as our own country. Next stop – G20. Thanks for keeping our chair warm, Turkey, you can go now.
- LOOK AT HIS THIGH! LOOK AT HIS THIGH!
- It was the biggest upset for Koreans since they lost on Iron Chef Pickled Cabbage.
- I have not been that wrapped around a woman’s thigh since I went to the Halloween party and dressed as a spaniel. My apologies to Christiana Amanpour.
- If we all pitch in, we can take this formerly obscure sport and raise it to the level of Ontario junior league hockey.
- Have you ever said, I’m the director, I’m going to lick something? … I’ve licked a few things there. I’m not recommending that you do or anyone else do, but I’ve licked a few things there. And I want to tell you, the Vermeers taste terrible.
- If they like it, they should lick it.

An all-around lovely show, i’ve watched the chicken exchange far too many times already. And the art-geek in me loved the interview (seeing “stephen” react to art would be wonderful). Also i believe saliva is used in art restoration so licking it might not be so wrong (I know, I know “that’s what she said”).

That BKAD was just surreal. Outstanding! :) I don’t usually like Republicans, but I’ll make an exception for that guy.

All I can say is, “$202,000 in one week? In the middle of a recession?! The Colbert Nation is a beast!!”

I nearly fell off the chair when he said $202,000 in one week. Wow, Nation, we’re awesome!
And that BKAD was hysterical. “So you are going to cockblock Delaware.” I’m still giggling over that part.

That was an awesome BKAD. I loved Stephen’s reaction when Castle said that yes, “I’m going to cockblock Delaware.” And the whole line of questioning about Stephen marrying a chicken was just hilarious.
And yay for the $202,000 for the skating team! Way to go, Nation!

LOVED Stephen’s tie last night. Just wanted to throw that out there. And his hair looked majestic :)
BKAD was so awesome last night! I would definitely rank it as one of my favorites – the bit about cockblocking Delaware was utterly HI-larious, although I’m a little weirded out that Stephen made me imagine him marrying a chicken HA.
I really enjoyed the interview last night as well. It’s always funny to see “Stephen” be blatantly suspicious and ignorant of art or anything that forces him to think outside of the norm lol.
Finally, HOLY CRAP! $202,000?!? I was cheering last night when Stephen said that’s how much Colbert Nation has donated. In SIX DAYS. Way to go, Nation! We rock!! I’m still waiting for them to market that US Speedskating/Colbert Report merchandise – I would rock a T-shirt for sure. :D

Did Mr. Castle even know what cockblocking means?
“You’re saying that the violently insane should not have guns? That’s what you’re saying. And you want to be elected as a Republican? Good luck with that.” “Thank you” *looks at camera* LoL
I just about LOST IT when he got to the part where he said “It doesn’t matter if I’m dying or my chicken is dying, we can’t visit each other in the hospital” LmAo Way to make a point about your relationships with chickens Colbert. Let’s just hope Sweetness didn’t hear that.
I also love that they showed Mr. Castle very strongly disagreeing with his own staff’s information. What a good sport.

Loved the BKAD, but wasn’t this the one where we had previews of him skateboarding in the hallway? Hope they put it up on the CN site!

I’m very proud that the Colbert Nation has already given so much money to the US Olympic speed skating team. I’m glad TCR is providing us with updates about our progress. I wasn’t able to donate much last week because I had a couple of unexpected expenses come up. I had been contemplating making a second donation after I got my November paycheck (I got paid today). Knowing that we still need to raise more money, motivates me to give a second time. I still find it exciting and amazing that the Colbert Nation is actually sponsoring an Olympic team. It was a brilliant idea!
My favorite thing about this episode was the whole discussion about licking things in the museum. It reminded me of some of the museum field pieces Stephen has done in the past. Those are always hilarious.

I was thinking the same thing (and I’ll probably end up linking to them in the Apopcalypse this week). Why the obsession with licking stuff, I’ll never know, but it does make me laugh!

Same here! I was so excited both at the racing results from the weekend, and at the news that we’ve raised $202,000 so far. Colbert Nation is MASSIVE.
I think that BKAD might have to go on the list of my favorites. It was amazingly silly. Rep. Castle was a very good sport about it. I also like his honesty in admitting that he was having second thoughts about doing it!

BKAD had me in stitches especially with the chicken conversation.
