The Daily Show Toss Recap – Week of 11/2/2009

By nerdygirl on November 6th, 2009 ·

Before we go, let’s check in with our good friend Stephen Colbert of The Colbert Report…

Greetings, fellow Zoners! This week I must confess to you all that I am behind the curve — I have three nights’ worth of TDS and TCR stacked up in the Tivo waiting to be watched, which I will catch up on over the weekend. I checked The Daily Show’s website to see if I missed a Toss, and indeed I did. Having missed the Al Gore interview, I don’t have much context for the Toss yet, but here it is:

Daily/Colbert – Faulty Al Gore Interview: Stephen wants to know why Jon’s interview with Al Gore was like a faulty computer program.

I love this Toss, and the guys are clearly having fun. Having Al Gore make a little guest appearance on Stephen’s side was a great choice. However — as much as I may lean politically towards Al, and as brilliant as I think he is… he’s kind of a comedy killer. He’s a lot of great things, but funny is not one of them. Still, the highlight of the Toss was Stephen’s “Sucka!” And the screen capture they chose above is just perfect.

If I might digress for a moment, I do want to give a little plug to Jon Stewart’s fantastic Glenn Beck parody from last night’s show. This is the type of comedy that Stephen normally excels at, but it’s never been Jon’s strong suit. Last night, though, he nailed it. Kudos, Mr. Stewart!

“Sucka!”

I already mentioned it over in another post, but yeah the Beck parody was excellent. I was half asleep when I watched it last night, but thought it was impressive. Then I watched it again this afternoon and realized it was disturbingly accurate. Kudos indeed, Jon.

That “Al-gorithm” joke Stephen made was actually super funny and very well-done. Kudos to Stephen and the writers for coming up with it!

Thanks for the shout-out to Jon’s parody of Glenn Beck. I still cannot get over how amazing the whole thing was! :D

Gotta agree! I haven’t laughed that hard at Jon’s ridiculous behavior in a while! As soon as he pulled out the books and the glasses, I knew we were in for a treat!

The Toss got my write-in vote, and the “Sucka!” capped it off. I think in this particular instance, Al Gore was not a comedy killer, and it worked quite well.

As for Jon’s extended Beck impression, two things came to mind. (1) This is disturbingly accurate (2) I was surprised to see this done by Jon as this is usually Stephen’s thing (or a TDS correspondent). Stephen did a bit of it to a certain extent a few months ago, but Jon really stole the thunder on this one. I was absolutely impressed. Who said Jon couldn’t act?

Actually Gore is pretty damn funny when he wants to be. You can’t be funny when you’re running for president–losing was the best thing that could have happened to him.

Having now seen the Formidable Opponent segment from Wednesday’s show I can confirm that Gore is capable of being funny on occasion, and his reputation as a comedy killer is exaggerated. :-)
