EPISODE NUMBER: 5140 (November 3, 2009)
GUESTS: Andrew Sullivan
SEGMENTS: The Colbert Nation supports the US Speedskating team, The WØRD: The Green Mile, Nailed ‘Em
VIDEOS: Tuesday, November 3, 2009
That is MASSIVE that we, the Colbert Nation, have raised over $40,000 dollars so far for the US Speedskating team. Way to go, Team Colbert! Hopefully they’ll keep letting us know how we’re doing. This is fantastic that Stephen was able to find yet another way to show the world that the Colbert Nation is the best fandom *ever*!! (Suck it, Jonas-heads!)
I’ll admit, I’m not a huge fan of the bits where the show features off-site interviews (Nailed ‘Em, Difference Makers, etc.). I’m spoiled – I like Stephen on the screen. However, last night’s “Nailed ‘Em” segment had me laughing so hard that my stomach is still hurting. My best friend and I met in a Mormon church, gawd, 17 years ago or so I guess, and he’s had to deal with a lot of the issues of prejudice against gays in the Mormon church. I can’t imagine that there will be a lot of the Brethren who will be happy about this little bit of publicity, especially that bit with the two hot Mormon “missionaries” macking down on the couch.
Go check out more information about “They Call Me Mr. Fry“, and then tell us what you thought of the episode tonight!

- And go to ColbertNation.com you did to find that the link to donate was not there. Folks, this is clearly the work of Canadian hackers terrified of our American speedskating team. I’m pretty sure they are Canadian because they left this note: “Sorry about that.”
- You the heroes have donated $40,000! There’s no recession in the Colbert Nation.
- We’ve got the prisoners packed in there so tight, sometimes there is sodomy where neither partner consents.
- The state of Arizona is facing bankruptcy. [But It's A Dry Bankruptcy]
- [The Shawshank Transaction]
- Remember, Enron transformed the power grid [Into The Power "Gridn't"]
- That’s not a bribe, that’s what I call a justice bonus. [Innocent Until Proven Profitable]
- Private property is what this country was built on. That and Indian bones.
- Mormon-ization
- You’ve got to look at the trespassing through the church’s eyes. You are just two ordinary trespassers, coming home from a trespassing party, who started to trespass it up all over their property. Trespassing it good. So naturally when you refused to stop your criminal-on-criminal trespassing, you had to be helped off.
- Right – you were on their private property and you made it hard when they tried to get you off.
- How would you like it if two Mormons came to your house and trespassed all over your couch? Hey, guys, eyes front.
- The Obama presidency, disappointment or catastrophe?
- No, no, you are *not* to agree with my guest, not tonight! Don’t you dare seduce them!
- I thought icebergs were a good thing, we’re not supposed to let them melt.
- If you keep talking like that, I’m going to put a gun in my mouth.

It was very hard to choose a favorite tonight, but I was especially fond of Stephen telling the audience to “not” agree with Andrew Sullivan. And, he tried not breaking character, from what I can remember, which is always a win because it usually ends up in a terrific smile!

I’m quite surprised he didn’t understand the Senate reconciliation process. That’s what’s got all the liberals steamed, because all of this kabuki theater is totally unnecessary. The Republicans used reconciliation all the time when they had the majority, but the Democrats are in the backpocket of industry so they use their horror at reconciliation to roll over and do nothing.
The “Mormon missionaries” kissing was very hot!

it was fun to hear how much was raised for the speedskating. just further proves that all he has to do is say the word and we’re there. i love us. :)
the nailed ‘em segment has caused quite the stir here in salt lake. everything about it has become a big topic in the news. especially on the radio where calls can be taken. as a mormon i won’t lie, the “missionary” couch scene pushed it a bit too far for me. but could i have really expected anything less?

Yeah, I was laughing until they showed the missionaries making out. Just seemed a bit too mean-spirited, though what the Mormons did to these guys was definitely mean-spirited as well.
I realize that comedy rarely sees boundaries, but I’m just agreeing with you.
P.S. I’m not Mormon, but I’m Catholic!

I actually love how bewildered Stephen looked when he said “Really!?” during the interview with Sullivan. So cute!
My best friends family is mormon, so i sent her the link so she can watch the clip from last night. I can’t wait for her reaction.

I’ve been reading Sullivan’s blog regularly, so it was nice seeing him on the Report again. :) And I learned about reconciliation! The more you know.
As for the trespassing Mormon missionaries…. tee hee. I died laughing at “you were on their private property and you made it hard when they tried to get you off.”

I loved the contrasting image of the straight couple groping without anyone reacting. Being affectionate in public is a straight privilege that even the most gay-friendly heterosexuals rarely reflect upon. So I was really grateful to the Report for showing that it has nothing to do with “decency”, which is what they always claim, and all about homophobia and heterosexism. (hope i’m not ranting too much?)
Loved the Word too.

Oh don’t worry – you’re not ranting too much; I completely agree with you :) That’s why I absolutely loved that segment last night. I was laughing and cheering throughout the whole thing, especially when they showed the two Mormons macking out on the couch. It was a thing of beauty :D

Actually, I don’t like extreme public displays of affection, i.e. making out, but these guys obviously weren’t doing that so it’s sad that they were reprimanded and on top of that handcuffed!

The Word was absolutely fantastic! I completely agree with the point he was making about privatization – speaking as a criminal justice major, the thought of judges sending people to prison just so they can cut a check with an insurance company is beyond ridiculous to me. And how AWESOME was Nailed ‘Em?! I laughed so hard I nearly cried. :)
Loved the interview last night as well – Andrew Sullivan was really great.
Go Colbert Nation for donating $40,000 in just 24 hours! We rock! :)

By the way, I thought it was so nice of Stephen to give a shout-out to one of his old friends at the end of the show and promote his one-man show.
