Episode 5139 (11/02/2009)

epguideiconEPISODE NUMBER: 5139 (November 2, 2009)
GUESTS: Dan Jansen, Nicholas Thompson
SEGMENTS: Stephen Colbert’s Sport Report, Alpha Dog of the Week
VIDEOS: Monday, November 2, 2009

For those of you on Colbert Hair Watch, you’ll notice that tonight not only is his hair past the ideal 100%, but it’s got a little bit of that wave that we all absolutely adore. Yay for hair! I’ve missed it ever so.

We’ll forgive Stephen’s atrocious Chewbacca impression, because I bet he can do Gollum all night long. He’s just a LOTR nerd, not a Star Wars nerd … and that’s perfectly okay. Between the Chewbacca impression, the Dutch impression, and the Arnold Schwarzenegger impression, he was just a barrel of adorkably bad impressions today.

Also, just a little suggestion for the people over at one of our very favorite websites, ColbertNation.com. Before a show in which Stephen commits the Colbert Nation to a sponsorship supposedly linked via CN.com, it would have been very helpful if someone had, oh, I don’t know, put the link on the site. Hopefully the link will be up soon And it looks like the link is up now, so let’s go and do all we can to help Stephen support the US Speedskating team.

What parts of the show did you particularly enjoy this evening??

Stephen Colbert - November 2, 2009

  • [Biden] really stuck his foot in his mouth when he said “[imitating Chewbacca] Aaaaaarraarrarar. It’s the best I could do.
  • Yes, listen to the joy!
  • Way to go, Brian Larson!
  • You are a credit to America in that America will take credit for you.
  • The Dutch bank DSB, which no doubt stands for Deposit Savings in Bong …
  • We have the clip which I translated myself.
  • Does that look like the breakfast of a man who understands the gravity of his situation?
  • Raspberry nose, remember when I said I’d eat you last? I lied.
  • He hadn’t heard a reaction like that since the premiere of Junior. Well, End of Days. Well, Jingle All The Way.
  • Kiss my gay ass? Mr. [Tom] Ammiano, you know Proposition 8 strictly forbids that.
  • After all, in the Gettysburg address, Lincoln managed so sneak in “Suck it South”.
  • Mr. Colbert, Tear down this guest!
  • Eventually they found out the couldn’t eat their bombs.

I liked Arnold’s oatmeal–I am twelve. :) Wasn’t his hair nice last night?

His hair reminds me of when he first started the show and his time toward the end of TDS: it has that cute little wave in it and isn’t as stiff.

I love it when Stephen directs the Nation to good causes. You know he wouldn’t ask viewers and fans to donate unless it was worthy and The Olympics + Colbert Report makes sense! I am also very amused when he explains origins and the screen becomes overcrowded: silver skates-johhny appleseed-paul bunyan-scrappy doo!

tek janseny is a good look too. i guess i’m all for a curl or a swoop!

(as for the buzzcut, he lucked out by having a beautifully shaped head. that could have gone horribly wrong!)

No I’m on Team Buzzcut with you, both for the look and for its endless goofy-cute grow out. Hi, fellow minority!

What a great show this was! Good to see that Stephen didn’t forget his conversational Dutch skills.

For those who want to know what the fragment from the Dutch TV actually said:
Mr. Lakeman: Banks can go bankrupt through filing for it, or …

They actually left out the relevant part, because a few seconds later Mr. Lakeman says that consumers should withdraw their funds from the DBS bank so that it would go bankrupt.
This was actually considered to be somewhat immoral because Mr. Lakeman is representing a group of consumers who have filed a lawsuit against DSB bank. DSB bank has sold insurance policies coupled with mortgages and neglected to tell consumers what the actual cost was of these policies. Now some of these consumers had filed a lawsuit against the bank because of this. Mr Lakeman conveniently forgot about all the people who had savings at the bank and its employees.
The bank had been under investigation because of this (and some other things) for some time, and Mr Lakeman sort of gave the final push. Even if the government had supported the bank, it would never have been financially viable, because of their inherently faulty business model. They however did make millions upon millions from these policies.

Also, good to see that the Colbert Nation will be supporting your national ice skating team. I am not sure if the Colbert bump will help the ice skaters much since we Dutch have some awesome skaters. If you do not know the name Sven Kramer now, you will most certainly know it after the Olympics!

Ooh, them’s fightin’ words! :) I do love the speed skating – I predict an especially entertaining Olympics.

Thanks for the background on DBS & Lakeman, too.

Holy. The Arnold-Breakfast thing was HILARIOUS. My favorite part, by far! Sooo funny. What would I do without you, Stephen?

My favorite thing about last night’s show would most definitely be his hair. Truth. It looks MAJESTIC. :D I loved the pinstripes and the tie as well.

And as much as I love The Sport Report and the fact that Colbert Nation is officially sponsoring a US Olympic team, the Arnold-Breakfast bit was HI-larious!

The breakfast bit with the Ahhnold imitation was hilarious! And we have another worthy cause to support. :-)

My reCAPTCHA: none wackier LOL! Indeed!

I loved the episode, as a Dutchwoman I loved his hilarious attempts at pronouncing our language, though the language student in me desperately wants to teach him to speak it correctly!

reCaptcha: muckiest myth :D

It was a very fun show, I still can’t get over that the Nation is going to be sponsoring the Olympic Speed Skating team. Good for you Stephen! Had to be my favorite part.

But on a shallow note, I loved the hair too. Let’s throw away the gel stuff.
