Stephen Colbert in the Zeitgeist – October 30, 2009
By
Greetings, Zoners! Everyone have their Halloween costumes planned out? I’m getting dressed up as a mild-mannered librarian, mostly because it requires minimal effort on my part. And truthfully that’s about the only look I can pull off these days. Anyway, before you all start sampling the Halloween candy, here’s the Colbert news for this week, your zeitgeist for October 30th.
People’s Choice Awards
- Okay, it’s time for all of us to do the one thing we do best as members of the Colbert Nation — vote for Stephen! Voting is open for nominations for the People’s Choice Awards, so head on over to their web site and vote for The Colbert Report as your favorite TV talk show. You can vote for up to five nominees. I don’t see a deadline for the voting, but I assume there is one, so don’t waste any time, get over there now!
Late night TV
- Late-night hosts battle for top spot in ratings – Chicago Tribune: In evaluating the best and worst of the late night shows and their hosts, Stephen tied with Jay Leno for Best Monologue: Stephen Colbert can take a single idea and carry it for five minutes — and all the while he’s channeling that character of his.
The Mountain Goats
- Playing telephone with bassist Peter Hughes: The Mountain Goat discusses touring, hitting up Chicago, and being on The Colbert Report – Loyola University Phoenix: An interview with The Mountain Goats’ bassist Peter Hughes talks a little bit about their appearance on TCR earlier this month.
- Phx: The band played on The Colbert Report last week and Stephen Colbert, in a rare moment of sincerity, confessed he was a huge fan. What was that like?
- PH: When someone who is a part of your life, a part of your universe in a way that Stephen Colbert has been a part of mine — and yours too, I’m sure — and all of a sudden you discover you’re equally part of his universe… it’s such a mind-blowing thing. It was a surreal day.
- Phx: Since receiving the “Colbert Bump,” have you noticed a rise in the band’s popularity?
- PH: Well the record came out the same day we appeared on Colbert and after just one week, the record, out of the gate, did better than any of the previous records. So I’m sure that’s been a contributing factor.
Hosting the Oscars
- The Dream Team should host the Oscars – Obsessed with Film: Who would you all like to see host the Oscars? How about… Ricky Gervais, Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, and Steve Carell: [Steve] Carell is funniest when in a team and he gets on so well with these guys that I think he would be a major hit and Stephen Colbert would bring a bit of new, fresh blooded comedy to the mix. He’s quick witted, often quite articulate ["often"?!? Let's try "always," chief.] and has so much energy and enthusiasm that he could really liven up the usual tedious bits of the ceremony.
- Top 10 funniest people on Twitter – MSNBC: #3 Stephen Colbert (@stephenathome), 1,082,754 followers; Rating: PG; doesn’t tweet anything (much) he wouldn’t say on TV. Twitter bio: [none] Now here’s a surprise: Stephen Colbert’s Twitter feed is funny! Colbert has surely succeeded Howard Stern as America’s new King of All Media. (Comparing Stephen to Howard Stern? I think I’m gonna be sick…) (Also, John Hodgman is #7. That is all.)

All four of them as hosts would be the best Oscars in history! Don’t think it’ll happen, though.
And how exactly did the Chicago Tribune “evaluate” the late-night shows? TDS and TCR have a very different feel & format from all those other shows and are so brilliantly written and executed that the others are so far behind, quality wise. Does Stephen even do a monologue? Heh. I guess the whole show – minus the interviews – is the monologue, then? ;)

I’m not sure what criteria applied for the “evaluation,” other than the writer’s opinion. Yeah, I never thought of what Stephen does as a monologue. Nor do I think that he and Jay Leno can or should be compared for what they do, because Stephen is clearly better at it. Disclaimer: I may be a bit biased. ;-)

WHAT?!?!?!
Jay Leno tied with Stephen? (storms out of NFZ in disgust)
Okay I’m back. Jay Leno isn’t good enough to lick Stephen’s ornately decorated cowboy boots.
Who wrote that article anyway? Whoever wrote it obviously doesn’t really watch TCR very often at all. If he/she had said tied with Letterman or Conan or hey here’s one…how bout a guy named Jon Stewart? then yeah I could go along with that.
Leno sucks and he’s not worthy of being mentioned in the same sentence as Stephen, Jon, Letterman or Conan.
Yeah! and don’t even get me started on how much material Leno steals from other shows.
Okay I’m calm now. I dumped some sugar on myself. That really does work;-)
