  1. I just wanted to say a huge THANK YOU to MsInterpreted for spearheading this project (and trust me, it was a project)! I also want to thank John for his thoughtful and amusing answers.

It’s so amazing to hear questions from a true fan’s point of view. MsI and Tiger are our resident John Oliver oeuvre experts, so it was very interesting to get to learn so much more about one of my favorite correspondents!

    • Ms Interpreted says:

Thanks for all your assistance, too, DB.

And yes, I’m just thanking my lucky stars (I’m not Irish, but whatever) that John was good enough to agree to this.

      Thanks so much, John!

  2. This was great.
I love that he and the others do things like this for the site. That just makes them like a thousand times more awesome.
I’m still kicking myself though for not talking to him when I was on New York on the same sidewalk he was.

  3. AliceInDallas says:

That was a great interview and I’m looking forward to viewing the links. I’ve seen John do stand-up twice. It was hilarious and the reason I need a bigger hard drive is for the shows and his podcast. Thanks so much.

  4. WOW! Great interview!

  5. Ullygirldk says:

Oh wow. This is amazing. I really adore John, almost no one can make me crack up as much as him. He’s just great. Thank you so much for the interview. I need to travel to the US to see him some time. A shame that I live in Denmark.

  6. what a great interview! I am SO GLAD to finally know what exactly goes into the Bugle after devoting about two entire days of my life to listening to the thing– that was an excellent question! it makes me happy to know where all those wonderful repartees come from.

  7. I remember meeting Jon Oliver outside tge TDS studios after the taping once and he was super nice! And what a great interview!!! Thanks a million!

  8. Fantastic, fantastic interview!!

  9. mrtigger001 says:

Great interview! Good, original questions, and some great answers too! You’re awesome, Ms. I!

  10. Thank you so much for this fantastic interview! It’s refreshing to see an interviewer with such extensive knowledge of John’s work. I especially loved reading his favorite segments from the Daily Show before he became such a vital part of it. :)

And here’s the episode of “The Department” missing from your list – The Department – 205 – Health (2005-08-09). So glad John is supportive of pirating this!

    • Ms Interpreted says:

Thank you — I knew there were one or two episodes that I missed in the linking and downloading frenzy was in last night. Crazy!

  11. Great interview!
Love the story about John playing with Stephen’s socks, haha. And thanks for linking to that TDS segment regarding the names – it has been too long since I watched that. I just laughed so hard I cried.
    Also, I love Richard Ayoade.

  12. PriyaNoblet says:

That was soo great! Thanks so much for that! Good questions by the way. Oh John! What a great guy. Loved that he gave permission to pirate his work. So awesome

  13. This interview was so awesome. I used to be too stoked on Jon and Stephen to care about other correspondents and/or hosts, but John’s stand-up is absolutely brilliant and he’s wonderful on TDS, and I am warming up accordingly hah.

  14. Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone involved! What a treat!
And I appreciate the Department files as well – what a bonus!

  15. Fantastic interview! Here’s the missing Department episode…

    Episode 205 – Health

  16. The photo strip at the top – where are those pictures from? I haven’t seen them before and they’re fantastic!

    • They’re screencaps from the menu for his Terrifying Times DVD.

      • Ms Interpreted says:

Good eye. It took me a while to grab and edit them (my DVD player on my home computer is a bit decrepit), but I had fun doing it — that menu monologue is ridiculous!

  17. Wonderful interview, I absolutely loved reading it. Well done Ms Interpreted and all at NFZ!

You only seem to be missing one episode of “The Department” (2-05 “Health”) so I’ve attempted to upload it here:

  18. What an amazing interview! Thanks so much, Ms I, for doing this, and big thanks to John O for taking the time to indulge us!

  19. What a wonderful interview! You asked some really great questions and I remember as I was reading along thinking how glad I was that you asked certain ones. It’s always nice to hear just how much people enjoy working on these two great shows and how much fun they have despite how much hard work is put in. The fact that he always reminds himself how lucky he is to be working on The Daily Show is just pure love. Thank you for linking the video clips that were mentioned as well!

  20. Oiga Boiga! Thank you so much for this :) Great interview.

  21. Thanks for that wonderful interview!

  22. mrtigger001 says:

I re-watched the “funny soldier names” segment again after reading this interview, and I was in stitches. It’s great to see someone who can crack Jon up that hard.

  23. He worked with Richard Ayoade? I would really like to see anything they did together. Both of them are absolutely hilarious guys.

  24. What a great interview with such good questions! I’m so glad John has said we can pirate The Department as much as we like – it makes me feel far less guilty about sending it to as many people as possible!

  25. Fabulous and thoughtful interview MSI, thanks so much.

  26. lulubelle says:

Excellent answers to very interesting questions. Thanks John Oliver for stopping in to the No Fact Zone!
PS Please, more John O. and Larry W. field pieces, they’re a very funny pairing!

  27. Ms Interpreted says:

Okay, so I know it’s basically the epitome of lame to comment on my own post, but I was thinking about what John said about foul language being their jazz, and I just cracked up again. I know it’s scripted, but this is basically what I had in mind when I asked him the question. Don’t click the link if you’re squeamish about language; it’s pretty f-ing poetic if you’re a mouthy broad like me, though. :)

Thanks again for all the positive feedback, all!

    • Ha, I was hoping you were referring to the genius of Malcolm Tucker and Armando Ianucci’s writing when you asked that! Best swearing on the planet if you ask me. =)

      • Ms Interpreted says:

I definitely agree. I’m still terribly bitter that The Thick of It isn’t available on Region 1 DVDs — I think it’s the BBC’s revenge on America for our having dumped tea into the Boston Harbor or something.

  28. That interview was so awesome, John Oliver is such a comedy beast and I loved reading his answers. The questions were great too, it’s always awesome to read an interview where the interviewer is as big as a fan as you are. And thanks so much for giving us The Department files, I’ve been looking for somewhere to download them forever!

  29. SusieBlack says:

I love this interview, it has fantastic and interesting insights into how Oliver works.

And thanks for the Loop video, such beauty in swearing I’ve never known before, but now can relish and enjoy! Make me want to fly through Scotland on my way to Germany next year; now to think of way to get them to swear at me that won’t get me grounded.

  30. Notyourbroom says:

I’ve made a torrent of the complete series of The Department, available here:

  31. Two things:
    1) Great interview. I add my voice to the chorus of awesome above.
    2) I’d like to congratulate John on receiving his Green Card (finally)! He talked about it in this week’s Bugle, and mentioned that he may now get arrested without getting deported. So, congrats!
